Thesis advisor: William Stanwood / This analysis examined the effects of reality television on its audiences. The purpose of the research was twofold: to uncover the effects that reality television has upon its audiences, and to determine whether or not these effects indicate that reality TV acts as an agent of societal change. The genre was divided into two distinct programming types: documentary as diversion and lifestyle programs. The findings suggested that reality TV has many audience effects. Discussion centered around the investigation of the second research question. It was concluded that lifestyle programs are agents of societal change, while documentary as diversion programs are not. Trust On The Web: The Impact Of Social Consensus On Information CredibilityDel Guidice, Katherine 01 January 2010 (has links)
Models of the need-driven information search and the information appraisal process were formed from a comprehensive literature review of factors affecting perceived credibility and trust in online information. The social component of online credibility has not, to date, been thoroughly researched. This component's impact on the development of the perceived credibility of online information was examined in two experiments. In the first experiment, the impact of positive, mixed, and negative social feedback on the development of the perceived credibility of a web page was evaluated. In the second experiment, the effect of social feedback on credibility was examined under two levels of motivation for information use to investigate whether social feedback becomes less important as motivation to obtain quality information increases. The results of Experiment 1 suggest that type of feedback can influence perceived web page credibility. Pages with negative audience feedback received the lowest credibility ratings, while pages with positive audience feedback received the highest credibility ratings. Pages with mixed or no audience feedback received higher credibility ratings than pages with negative feedback, but lower credibility ratings than pages with positive feedback. In Experiment 2, high motivation did not impact the number of web page elements participants reported that they used to determine credibility. High motivation for information use also did not reduce the impact of audience feedback on perceived credibility.

De nombreux animaux évoluent dans un environnement social où les individus peuvent réaliser de l'écoute/observation clandestine, c'est-à-dire, obtenir des informations sur des compétiteurs ou partenaires sexuels potentiels en observant les interactions de leurs congénères. À l’inverse, les animaux engagés dans une interaction peuvent exprimer un effet d'audience: modifier leurs comportements en présence d’observateurs (audiences). Ce doctorat s'intéresse à la flexibilité et aux conséquences de ces comportements et recherche des stratégies individuelles dans leur utilisation chez le canari domestique. Les résultats indiquent que l'écoute clandestine influence les préférences sexuelles et l'investissement reproducteur des femelles. Ce dernier dépend également des statuts hiérarchiques et de la personnalité. Les effets d'audience sont mis en évidence chez les deux sexes et semblent complexes et flexibles. Leur expression dépend de la situation, du type d'audience, de la dominance et de la familiarité des individus impliqués mais pas de la personnalité. Ces résultats posent la question des bases cognitives impliquées dans l'écoute clandestine et les effets d'audience. / Many animals live in social environments where individuals can eavesdrop: get information on competitors or potential sexual partners by observing interactions between conspecifics. In such environments, interacting individuals might express an audience effect: they can change their behavior in the presence of eavesdroppers (i.e. an audience). This Ph.D. thesis focuses on the flexibility and the consequences of these behaviours and searches for individual strategies in their expression in domestic canaries. Results show that eavesdropping drives sexual preferences and reproductive effort in females. The latter is also influenced by dominance and personality. The existence of complex and flexible audience effects is demonstrated in males and females. Their expression depends on the situation, the type of audience, the dominance and familiarity of the interacting individuals but not on personality. Results raise the question of the cognitive foundations of eavesdropping and audience effects.

Vocal communication in bonobos (Pan paniscus) : studies in the contexts of feeding and sexClay, Zanna January 2011 (has links)
Despite having being discovered nearly 80 years ago, bonobos (Pan paniscus) are still one of the least well understood of the great apes, largely remaining in the shadow of their better known cousins, the chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). This is especially evident in the domain of communication, with bonobo vocal behaviour still a neglected field of study, especially compared to that of chimpanzees. In this thesis, I address this issue by exploring the natural vocal communication of bonobos and its underlying cognition, focusing on the role that vocalisations play during two key contexts, food discovery and sex. In the context of food-discovery, I combine observational and experimental techniques to examine whether bonobos produce and understand vocalisations that convey meaningful information about the quality of food encountered by the caller. Results indicate that bonobos produce an array of vocalisations when finding food, and combine different food-associated calls together into sequences in a way that relates to perceived food quality. In a subsequent playback study, it was demonstrated that receivers are able to extract meaning about perceived food quality by attending to these calls and integrating information across call sequences. In the context of sexual interactions, I examine the acoustic structure of female copulation calls, as well as patterns in call usage, to explore how these signals are used by individuals. My results show that females emit copulation calls in similar ways with both male and female partners, suggesting that these signals have become partly divorced from a function in reproduction, to assume a greater social role. Overall, my results highlight the relevance of studying primate vocalisations to investigate the underlying cognition and suggest that vocalisations are important behavioural tools for bonobos to navigate their social and physical worlds.

Le choix de partenaire est souvent considéré comme étant le résultat d’une simple interaction, mais, en nature, l’environnement social dans lequel les animaux communiquent correspond généralement à un réseau d’émetteurs et de récepteurs. La présence de congénères, de rivaux, et même de prédateurs durant le choix de partenaire peut avoir plusieurs répercussions sur ce choix. Être observé par une audience composée de congénères de même sexe peut pousser certaines espèces à modifier le niveau d’expression de leurs préférences, et même à modifier ces préférences pour réduire la compétition ou éviter d’être imitées. La préférence de plusieurs femelles diamant mandarin pour deux mâles a été mesurée en absence et en présence d’une audience femelle pour déterminer si la présence de rivales a des effets sur le choix de partenaire des femelles. De plus, afin de déterminer si ces effets varient en fonction de la qualité des femelles focales et audience, la condition de plusieurs femelles a été altérée en diminuant leur capacité à voler. Selon les résultats, les femelles diminuent leur niveau de sélectivité suite à l’ajout d’une audience femelle, et l’intensité des interactions mâle-femelle dépend de la condition des femelles focales. Les femelles ajustent leur comportement surtout pour éviter d’être imitées et non en fonction de leur condition. Being observed by an audience of same-sex conspecifics can drive some species to alter the level of expression of their preferences, and even to modify those preferences to reduce competition or avoid being copied. The preference of several zebra finch females for two males was measured without and with a female audience to determine if the presence of an audience alters female mate choice. Moreover, to determine if these effects vary according to focal and audience females’ condition, the condition of several females was altered by diminishing their flying ability. According to the results, females lower their level of selectivity following the addition of an audience, and the intensity of male-female interactions depends on the focal females’ condition. Our findings suggest that females mainly adjust their behavior to avoid being copied and not according to their condition. However, these two mechanisms might have affected the females’ mating preferences simultaneously.
