The design and evaluation of industrial hypermedia

Wills, Gary Brian January 2000 (has links)
This thesis proposes design, authoring and evaluation methodologies to address the issues faced by an enterprise when developing a large-scale industrial strength hypermedia application, for use in a manufacturing environment. The design methodology satisfies the requirements found in the industrial environment in a holistic approach. That is, the methodology takes into account the information structures, the constraints that exist within the industrial environment, and the background of the people who will have to implement the hypermedia application. The size and complexity of an industrial environment aggravates the problems found in general hypermedia authoring, especially in the areas of scalability, re-use and cognitive overload to the author. Hence, an authoring methodology is present, which addresses these issues. The design and authoring methodologies are evaluated against an independent set of criteria. The results show, even after sensitivity analysis, that when compared against other methodologies, the methodologies presented in this thesis are the ones better suited to meet the requirements of an industrial application. The design and authoring methodologies have been used to produce an industrial hypermedia application. The application communicated with existing information systems, factory floor equipment and the management network. The application has been used to evaluate the usability of the system within the factory environment. A cost effective user evaluation methodology was developed. Not only did it allow potential problems to be identified early in the project, but it also encouraged ownership of the project from the managers, maintainers and factory-floor operators. The user evaluation showed that, compared to an existing paper based system, the user preferred the hypermedia system and that they found the hypermedia application quicker and easier to use. While the majority of problems to be overcome, when introducing industrial strength hypermedia, are technical, some of the most difficult issues relate to the inertia of the management culture within the organisation. Hence, the strategic benefits and considerations when introducing hypermedia application into an organisation are discussed. In addition a model for estimating the effort to produce an industrial hypermedia application, has been developed.

The Implementation of an Authoring Tool for e-Learning Platform

Chen, Chih-Chia 30 August 2004 (has links)
On e-Learning platform, it used to make use of teaching materials with static media (Html, Word, PowerPoint, PDF) traditionally. With Increases in computing power recently, dynamic teaching materials like multi-media have been used progressively on e-Learning platform. Media like audio and video, nevertheless, need more and more computing ability, even employed with the last compression technology (MPEG-4, WMV9, H.264, AAC) to enhance compression ratio. At the same time, they neglect to integrate existing static teaching materials in addition. Hence, ¡§are video media necessary?¡¨ which is a good idea we reflect upon. An authoring tool fit the standard teaching materials bears the characteristics of teaching materials re-use and exchanging. As a result of this, our system integrates each material to transform ones into an appropriate media for a variety of education environments. For instance, compatible with traditional static media, simple films, transforming them into streaming to delivering via networks, even our synchronized learning methods, as can be achieved with demands from students. The synchronizations of materials our system provides can integrate voice and power-point slides into an on-line presentation with the feature of dynamic exposition to impart knowledge to students more effectively. Of course, it also can be played back, recording in real time, and showing presentations in full screen like ordinary PowerPoint. Further, we can do authoring after recorded. In this feature, we can set time stamp on each slide arbitrarily to achieve the best purpose of presentation.

A Tutorial on Authorware

DeVaux, David R. 25 April 1996 (has links)
Authorware is an icon-based multimedia authoring tool which allows the rapid development of complex interactive multimedia projects, particularly courseware and kiosk applications, for both the Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. This project consists of three main elements: interactive courseware, written in Authorware, which teaches the student basic concepts involved in Authorware programming, and demonstrates the function of each of the icons used to program in Authorware; a tutorial through which students are given the opportunity to use Authorware to incorporate various media elements, including written audio, graphics, video, and text, into their own interactive courseware; and various course materials, including a statement of objectives, study questions, and quiz questions. These materials were developed for use in the Virginia Tech Computer Science course CS4984 (Multimedia, Hypertext, and Information Access) as part of the unit on System and Application Construction. / Master of Science
