Bio-bibliography of Miss Lillian Smith

Unknown Date (has links)
"Often there is interest in living authors for whom information about their lives and writings has not been gathered together in any one place. In seeking material about Miss Lillian Smith, the writer of this paper found no complete bibliography of her writings; no complete biography. The purpose of the paper, therefore, is to set forth, in the form of a bio-bibliography, the life and works of Miss Smith"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1956." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Sarah Rebecca Reed, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 67-70).

Thomas Merton, Trappist monk: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"A knowledge of bibliography and facility in the use of bibliographic tools is of great importance to librarians. For this reason this writer selected as her Master's paper a project that would further this knowledge and this facility: a brief biography of Thomas Merton, whose writings have brought much satisfaction to this writer, and a complete bibliography of his works that have appeared as trade books to the present time. Such presentation of an author and his works has been defined by William Howard Huff as a bio-bibliography. Excluded from this study are the works which have appeared in collections by other authors which, in most cases, are incorporated in one of Merton's books"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1956." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Includes bibliographical references.

James Albert Michener: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study is to present the life and books of James Michener with reports of contemporary criticisms of these books. Although the author has written numerous articles and stories, which have appeared in various periodicals, they will not be discussed as this consideration is limited to his books published in the postwar period through the year 1958"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "January, 1960." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 51-64).

Armstrong Sperry: Juvenile fiction writer

Unknown Date (has links)
"All of these qualities are readily apparent in Call It Courage, the book which won for Sperry the 1941 Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to children's literature in the year of its publication. It was appreciation of this book and curiosity about its background that led the writer of this paper to select Armstrong Sperry and his writing as her subject. The writer should, perhaps, have begun with an investigation of biographical sources. If she had done so, she would have discovered gaps in information and would have gotten in contact with Sperry himself sooner. Also a knowledge of the experiences connected with each book must surely have added to her enjoyment in reading it. However, that was not the procedure used. Having established through standard bibliographies what books Sperry had written, the writer read them in haphazard order. After consulting the available biographical material, she wrote Armstrong Sperry in care of his most recent publisher, Winston in Philadelphia. In a most cordial reply, which arrived only five days later, Sperry answered her questions about his life, the source of his background materials for recent books, and his work in progress. He added several interesting paragraphs giving his philosophy of writing. Mr. Sperry's letter added greatly to the information gathered from other sources. The first chapter of this paper presents the salient facts of Sperry's life"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1959." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Sarah Rebecca Reed, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes annotated list of Sperry's works. / Includes bibliographical references.

James D. Horan: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"When from time to time Mr. Horan's books have appeared, this writer has been impressed with their fine press; has even on occasion been interested enough to locate copies, sometimes for close reading, sometimes for casual browsing; and has felt that Horan's total output has been of sufficient merit to justify more than casual consideration of his books. This belief is the motivation for this paper, the purpose of which is to bring together for the first time a listing of Mr. Horan's works, with descriptions thereof, and a summary of the critics' reactions to his published books. This bibliographical and descriptive report is prefaced by a brief sketch of Horan's life"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1957." / "Submitted to the Graduate council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 62-69).

Eleanor Estes: A bio-bibliographical study

Unknown Date (has links)
"In view of the contribution she has made to the field of children's literature and the distinction she has achieved in being awarded the Newbery Medal for one of her books, Eleanor Estes has been chosen as the subject for this study. The purpose is to discover the pertinent and interesting facts of her life and to analyze the reaction to her works in the reviews and criticism. The procedure in compiling data for this study was to read all of Mrs. Estes' books and to study all available articles and reviews that have appeared in current books and periodicals. An appeal was made to Mrs. Estes to supply certain data concerning her life during the last few years. She most graciously responded with interesting and informative letters"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1958." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Agnes Gregory, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 33-38).

Contributions of Elizabeth Yates to children's and young people's literature

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this paper is to give a brief sketch of the life of Elizabeth Yates, bringing out those incidents and experiences that affected her professional career; to summarize the contemporary criticism of her work as to her ability as an author for children and young people; and to assemble a bibliography of her contributions to literature. Miss Yates has written thirty books for children and young people, all of which are listed in the bibliography at the end of the paper. As the books cover such a wide age range in appeal and vocabulary, it was decided to limit the study to those books intended for ages ten through eighteeen, omitting those publications for children of the primary grades and those for adults"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1957." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Includes bibliographical references.
