The relationship of heuristic instruction to computer based problem-solving performance

Thank you. / This study investigated the relationship between an instructional pedagogy formulated around Polya's heuristic four-step method and computer based problem solving performance in an introduction to computer programming course. A four step heuristic managerial guide, employing structured walkthroughs and group activities, was developed to direct students into a period of constructive reflection, planning, and refinement supporting structured programming. The subjects consisted of fifty-four secondary school seniors, completing a first course in BASIC programming, evenly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received instruction related to the heuristic managerial guide. The control group received instruction similar to what was normally provided them without the guide. Four problems were introduced and analyzed, within a lecture format, followed by a question-answer session. Each subject attempted to complete a problem-set consisting of a problem and three related extensions. After a week, results were evaluated and scores from zero to four were assigned based on the number of correct solutions attained. No qualitative evaluation was performed. The null hypothesis stated that the two sets of scores came from populations having identical distributions. Since a normal distribution was questionable, the statistic used was the Mann-Whitney U test, a nonparametric version of the t-test for independent samples. The ranked scores for the two groups appeared to support the research hypothesis, since the sum of ranked scores for the experimental group exceeded those of the control group 840 to 645. However, the results of the Mann-Whitney test did not support a rejection of the null hypothesis at the 5% level of significance. The value, z = 1.791, was sufficient to support the rejection of the null hypothesis at the 7% level. Therefore, the heuristic managerial guide showed a tendency to positively contribute to student performance on the problem set used in the study. The conclusion drawn was that the heuristic managerial guide yielded encouraging, but not significant, results when applied to a computer based problem set. Further research into this approach should consider the effects of the method if implemented at the inception of the students' first course. / 2031-01-01

An Interpreter for the Basic Programming Language

In this thesis, the first chapter provides the general description of this interpreter. The second chapter contains a formal definition of the syntax of BASIC along with an introduction to the semantics. The third chapter contains the design of data structure. The fourth chapter contains the description of algorithms along with stages for testing the interpreter and the design of debug output. The stages and actions-are represented internally to the computer in tabular forms. For statement parsing working syntax equations are established. They serve as standards for the conversion of source statements into object pseudocodes. As the statement is parsed for legal form, pseudocodes for this statement are created. For pseudocode execution, pseudocodes are represented internally to the computer in tabular forms.

Semi-automated process planning and cost estimation of turned components based on CATIA V5 Machining

<p>To be more competitive in the market, many companies are trying to speed up the quotation process and quote more attractive prices. Therefore, they have identified a need for support in the quotation process in order to reduce the quotation lead-time and ensure a higher level of accuracy in the cost estimations. The Quotation Calculator, an application program, has been developed as part of the degree thesis which was carried out at AB Norrahammars Mekaniska Verkstad, NMW 2006/07. This Quotation Calculator can be operated to calculate the material and manufacturing costs of a new product.</p><p>NMW has recently acquired licenses for CATIA V5, Dassault Systems, for the purpose of making process planning and NC-programming more efficient. NMW wants to generate the data needed from the machining module for the cost calculations. Hence this project was initiated in order to extract data from CATIA V5 for further use in Quotation Calculator or other computer system in NMW.</p><p>This work has resulted in a system developed with a common hosted programming language to extract and transfer information. The system retrieves model geometry from CAD and information on process planning from CAM, then matches the information in the application for the purpose of cost estimation. The system once developed, is supposed to be used for every new product. For this approach, the relationship of the data from CATIA V5 and the Quotation Calculator has been analyzed.</p><p>Within this thesis, the focus is on production cost estimation. The method used here is programming in Visual Basic Editor to extract information from the machining module in CATIA V5 and then import them to Microsoft Excel. With standard operations, tables of data and several inputs, the cost calculation and hence the quotation process can be automatically implemented. This work has been generated with the Quotation Calculator. With the correct input data to process planning and this new quotation system, the machining time and the costs can be estimated more accurately and easier. The time and cost information is made available for decision making. As a result, the lead time for the quotation process will be shortened and a relatively more attractive price can be quoted to the customers.</p>

Perceptions Of Students And Teachers About The Use Of A Kid&#039 / s Programming Language In Computer Courses

This study examined the integration of Small Basic as a new technology in computer courses of elementary schools in Turkey and investigated the perceptions of students and teachers of elementary school about the use of Small Basic in their computer courses in terms of its effects on their perceived motivation, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Also, information from teachers about advantages and disadvantages of this technology, and the suggestions of teachers about the use of this technology and the content was gathered. A case study was conducted in the form of an action research / that is, this study used components of case study by action research. The data were collected from 4th and 5th grade students of Plevene Elementary School by using a questionnaire. Also, interviews were conducted with the teachers. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions and descriptive analysis methods were used to analyze the results. The findings of the study showed that Small Basic is accepted by students and all teachers as a new technology. Also, students and teachers stated that using this technology affected students&#039 / perceived motivation towards computer courses positively. Moreover, the students and the teachers perceived that Small Basic is a useful and easy to use technology. Moreover, it was stated that the students and the teachers are satisfied with advantages of the use of this new technology in their learning environment.
