Ousia And Tragedy An Ontological Approach To Aristotle&#039 / s Poetics

Aytemiz, Volkan 01 September 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The main idea of this thesis is to suggest a new type of reading on Aristotle&#039 / s Poetics. Commentators of Poetics tried to relate it to Aristotle&#039 / s ethical treatises. However, in this research, it will be argued that Poetics should be read under the light of Metaphysics. The interpretation proposed here is based on Aristotle&#039 / s understanding of ousia (substance). The ontological status of artifacts in Aristotle&#039 / s philosophy will be examined while inquiring the relationships between Poetics and Metaphysics. Consequently, I will argue that tragedy is an ousia and attemted to show that Aristotle&#039 / s ontological philosophy is applicable to Poetics. Becouse of the fact that Aristotle treats a tragedy as a partial independent being, I will argue in Aristotelian terms that a tragedy should be judged by its intrinsic values, rather than ethical or rhetorical merits.

The End Of A Tradition: How The Classical Turned Into Burlesque

Karacasu, Baris 01 April 2007 (has links) (PDF)
During the creation or invention of literary canon some texts are excluded with respect to the aims of the historians. This thesis analyses the process of exclusion in a historical context and tries to show how those texts are related to literary canon or socalled traditional-classical literature by means of intertextuality. It focuses on the burlesque pieces of literature of the 18th century and how they are composed with regard to the genres and forms they are transforming.

The Relevancy Of Art And Time In Heidegger&#039 / s Philosophy

Sariot, Eray 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims at propounding possible relations between the concepts of time and art in Martin Heidegger&rsquo / s thinking. Time and art which hold a central place in different periods of Heidegger&rsquo / s thinking in line with his fundamental question of Being are considered together mainly through the analysis of artwork&rsquo / s temporal characteristics. The temporality of the artwork in question is investigated specifically in terms of its basic elements of earth and world and with its relation to authenticity. In this respect, this thesis argues that the work of art bears a temporality of its own and attempts to show how this is realized with the experience of art

On The Concept Of Irony In Rorty

Erdogan, Alper 01 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Irony has for long been on the boundary between philosophy and arts owing to its both verbal/logical character and its aesthetic appeal. Recently, Rorty proposed irony as the main discursive attitude in a liberal society. In this study, I investigate liberal irony from a philosophical perspective. More specifically, I demonstrate that irony is representative of a certain view of subjectivity and an ethical stance, a critical tool that is of special importance in a coherence view of truth and a rhetorical form that appeals both to the rational and irrational.

Sources Of The Exoticism In The Architecture Of Louis Sullivan: The Primitive, The Oriental, The Natural

Kose, Selcuk 01 June 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to demonstrate the idea of Exoticism and its effect on nineteenth century architectural tendencies and especially on the philosophy and the works of Louis Sullivan (1856-1924). The study begins with an elucidation of the concept &ldquo / exoticism.&rdquo / After the thoughts of a group of nineteenth century European intellectuals are discussed, the philosophy of Sullivan is analyzed. Following chapters are dedicated to the works of Sullivan. Exotic world was the source of a stimulating discourse for the nineteenth century intellectuals. American architect Sullivan also found inspiration in it. In the development of his philosophy, Sullivan concentrated on the idea of &ldquo / integrity of man and nature,&rdquo / and he realized that integrity was present in the art of primitive and especially Oriental cultures. His universal formula, &ldquo / form follows function,&rdquo / was based on the idea that the primitive man did not put a barrier between himself and nature / hence every artwork created by him was a process of transformation of natural forms. Sullivan modeled his designs upon nature and in this way attempted to reproduce this creative process. This study interprets Sullivan&rsquo / s philosophy and works and also discusses their likely contribution to the work of the contemporary architect.

Reconsidering The Kantian Concept Of Genius Through The Questions Of Nature, Freedom And Creativity

Ertene, Merve 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, the role and the significance of the Kantian theory of art and concept of genius in Kant&rsquo / s system is examined. In this examination, it is aimed to answer the question of the meaning of being human in Kant&rsquo / s system through art and artist. To this end, Kant&rsquo / s consideration of art from the spectator&rsquo / s standpoint and ignorance of artist&rsquo / s perspective are criticized. In conformity with this criticism, throughout the thesis, depending on Kant&rsquo / s conceptualization of the genius, the artist&rsquo / s perspective and artistic experience are tried to be exhibited. In order to understand and interpret the artist&rsquo / s perspective, the meaning of the concepts of nature and freedom that arise along with the concept of genius is clarified. By considering the effects of the freedom and the natural necessity on genius, it is asserted that since the necessity of the naturally endowed talent of genius and the freedom of the productive act of genius cause to the one and the same act, the creative activity of genius refers to the unity of all the dualities in the Kantian system and hence to the completeness of the system. As a result of this claim, art, which arises from the dual nature of human, becomes the way to unite this duality.

The Relation Of Aesthetic Experience To The Truth And The Good In Kant

Avci, Nil 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to explore the role and significance of the aesthetic experience in Kant&rsquo / s philosophy. To accomplish this aim / firstly, the role of aesthetic power of judgment is discovered in subject&rsquo / s production of truths about the sensible world which is attributed to the cognitive power of understanding. Secondly, the role of aesthetic power of judgment in subject&rsquo / s representation of the good and in formation of moral judgments is demonstrated. Aesthetic power of judgment which enables both the reception and production of the beauty as a necessary harmony and unity brings an aesthetic and intuitive determinability to the acknowledged transcendent field for knowledge. The thesis is concluded by the affirmation that aesthetic power of judgment as an orienting interpretative power is a necessary condition for the subject, who is limited in knowledge and sensibly conditioned in the realization of moral purposes, in order to know and to have a moral life.

A Research On The Possibility Of Distinguishing Kitsch And Art Using Philosophical Hermeneutics

Kaya, Devrim 01 August 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis tries to distinguish kitsch and art with the help of philosophical hermeneutics by reading it in the light of Derrida&rsquo / s interpretation of Hamlet in Specters of Marx. It defines kitsch as experience in order to go beyond both of the two main approaches, namely, the one that sees kitsch as an object and the one that reduces it to the behaviour of the subject. It tries to show that kitsch is not just an aesthetic problem, but also, a political one.
