An evaluation of communication intergration within a State-owned organisation

This research study is qualitative exploratory in nature, trying to gain insight into integrated communication at Eskom. The study presents the methodology of the investigation, the analysis of the data, the findings as well as the conclusion and recommendations. Data collection techniques include an online self-administered questionnaire, structured questionnaire, focus group discussions and content analysis of the organisations’ publications. The population selected consists of Eskom communication managers and professionals, human resources personnel and project managers to establish the extent to which integrated communication is practised within Eskom. Finally, the research findings are discussed and further recommendations proposed. The findings show that Eskom communication is predominantly top-down with the divisions still working in silos. Furthermore, a measuring instrument developed to evaluate the extent of integrated communication as proposed by Du Plessis and Scoonraad in Barker and Angelopulo (2006) were found to be applicable to the Eskom situation. / Communication Science / M.A. (Specialisation in Organisational Communication Research and Practice)

Tlumočník jako mezikulturní mediátor v česko-čínském dialogu / Interpreter as intercultural mediator in a Chinese-Czech dialogue

The thesis analyzes the interpreter's role in overcoming the cultural barrier between Czechs and Chinese. It focuses on interaction in business settings. The topic has not yet been sufficiently explored, so the first part aims to give a comprehensive overview of relevant literature. First, the role of the interpreter in liaison interpreting is discussed, followed by a systematic comparison of the Czech and Chinese cultures. The overview covers a whole range of cultural differences that can potentially create a barrier in intercultural communication. The second part is a research in interpreter's strategies of overcoming that barrier. The data is acquired via interviews with experienced interpreters. Having analyzed this data, the thesis concludes with taxonomy of factors, which influence how active a role the interpreter plays in the interaction, and of activities that make up the role of an interpreter as intercultural mediator.

Integrated Reporting <IR> Framework - a strategic move to sustainability?

Global society is threatened by many social and ecological challenges, together they form a complex environment defined in this thesis as the sustainability challenge. Organizations have a major impact on this challenge, with business strategy being the leverage point. This thesis identifies the gaps and recommendations to address those gaps to strategically move organizations towards reaching a sustainable society. The <IR> Framework by the IIRC is a reporting structure and method that includes sustainability elements within a business orientated context. Through 20 interviews, report comparison and system analysis we have generated the results. These highlight gaps with regards to planetary limits and lack of directing organizations towards sustainability. Based on the findings we conclude that <IR>can be a steppingstone by introducing organizations to sustainability elements within business language. However, <IR> cannot be used as a standalone tool to reach a sustainable society. <IR> does assist and succeed in making organizations more strategic, which prepares them to move to sustainability. Overall, organizations acquire a broader perception and understanding regarding non-financials. Recommendations include integrating systems thinking, formulating ‘success’ and back casting from it to strategically prioritize actions; also referring to other tools and concepts that can assist in niche areas within <IR>.

Social media marketing in B2B : Can customer engagement help increase brand awareness? A Mixed Methods Study

As social media platforms are increasingly becoming more popular and a part of everyday life, Business-to-Business (B2B) marketers from different industries are realizing social media’s potential for achieving marketing purposes. However, scientific literature regarding social media usage in B2B contexts is still filled with gaps in knowledge; especially when compared to literature about social media usage in Business-to-Customer (B2C) contexts. One of these research gaps is the lack of niched information about each effect of using social media. This paper aims at contributing to filling this research gap by presenting an extensive literature review about social media marketing in B2B; followed by an analysis of empirical data gathered from 11 different cases of B2B companies engaged in social media marketing. Moreover, this is to answer the research questions; how are B2B companies using social media to increase brand awareness? Which types of content inspire the most customer engagement? And how can B2B companies amplify their chances of succeeding in increasing brand awareness through social media? This paper will further contribute to this research topic, by identifying further research gaps and present suggestions for future research.

Analisa o contexto em que se inserem os grupos de teatro e seus públicos, suas características específicas e de que forma ações de Comunicação e de Relações Públicas podem provocar e influenciar o relacionamento entre ambos. A partir principalmente de produtos e projetos de memória de grupos de teatro, é possível identificar os potenciais de comunicação que contribuem para a formação e fortalecimento da imagem institucional desses grupos. Embora seja um paradoxo trabalhar a perpetuidade de uma arte cuja natureza é efêmera, encontramos no Grupo Galpão uma série de ações, projetos e produtos que demonstram que é possível, por meio de um projeto consistente, valorizar a imagem e reputação de grupos de teatro. / This study seeks to analyse the context of theater groups and their publics/audiences, their specifities and how Communication and Public Relations actions can cause and influence their relationship. Based primarily on memory products and projects of theater groups, it is possible to identify the potential of communication that contributes to the formation and strengthening of the institutional image of these groups. Although working the perpetuity of an art whose nature is ephemeral seems to be a paradox, the Galpão Theater Group keeps a set of actions, projects and products which show us that it is possible to enhance the image and reputation of a theater group by means of a consistent project.

As histórias em quadrinhos foram definidas como arte sequencial e costumam ser popularmente associadas como um veículo de comunicação voltadas para o entretenimento. No entanto existem histórias em quadrinhos que são destinadas ao uso na educação, na transmissão de informações e na construção de conhecimentos específicos para o aperfeiçoamento profissional e humano. Este projeto teve como objetivo analisar a potencialidade dos quadrinhos na educação corporativa no Brasil, com recorte em São Paulo. Para atingir esse objetivo, o trabalho abordou algumas definições básicas sobre histórias em quadrinhos, suas características e alguns eventos importantes durante a sua evolução histórica. Realizou-se também um levantamento das produções e publicações de quadrinhos corporativos em São Paulo identificando os principais autores e as editoras desse segmento. Para averiguar a potencialidade dos quadrinhos na educação corporativa, este estudo foi sustentado por duas premissas: a primeira se referiu ao reconhecimento dos quadrinhos como linguagem autônoma e a segunda foi constatar a existência de profissionais especializados em atender o mercado de produção dos quadrinhos corporativos no Brasil. Além disso, foram verificados os métodos de produção, distribuição e utilização dos quadrinhos nos programas de educação de algumas corporações. A hipótese principal deste estudo foi que o uso estratégico dos quadrinhos pode contribuir positivamente para a comunicação no ambiente corporativo. Os resultados demonstraram que os quadrinhos têm sido utilizados por grandes corporações como SEBRAE, ABNT, Metrô SP, Petrobrás, Telefonica, O Boticário, SENAI, Votorantim e outros. Existe no Brasil uma produção regular e bem organizada de quadrinhos corporativos realizada por estúdios, autores e editoras especializadas. Essas produções ocorrem, pelo menos, desde 1994. A maior parte desses quadrinhos foram distribuídos dentro de empresas ou em ambientes mais restritos. No entanto, também houve algumas publicações que foram distribuídas e comercializadas em livrarias publicados no formato Graphic Novel. Verificou-se também que alguns quadrinhos corporativos têm sido publicados em suportes digitais, como foi observado no caso do convênio entre o SEBRAE e a ABNT. De acordo com os resultados coletados nesse estudo, a potencialidade do uso dos quadrinhos na educação corporativa foi associada, principalmente, em auxiliar nos processos da conscientização, compreensão e memorização de ideias e informações. A sua aplicação estratégica através de tiras e cartuns também facilitou e beneficiou a apresentação de ideias ou conceitos durante aulas/palestras e em textos de natureza mais complexa. O uso dos quadrinhos também possuiu o efeito de conseguir romper com o excesso de formalidade na comunicação com os funcionários em algumas empresas, ampliando o seu interesse e envolvimento com os programas de educação. Além disso, alguns elementos usados nos quadrinhos como a concepção de personagens e o humor gráfico também se mostraram como elementos de grande potencial para auxiliar o desenvolvimento de programas de educação corporativa. / Comics were defined as sequential art and commonly associated as a communication vehicle aimed for entertainment. However some comics are used to transmit information, give support to education programs and help to improve the knowledge building about specific themes related to the human and professional development. The main objective of this project was to analyze the potential use of comics in corporate education in Brazil, focused in São Paulo state. To reach this object, this study described some basic definitions of comics, their characteristics and some important events occurred during its historical evolution. Moreover, a bibliography survey of comics productions and publications of corporate comics in São Paulo was also done and the main authors and publishers of this segment were identified. To investigate the potential use of comics in corporate education, this study was supported by two premises: the first one referred to the recognition of comics as an autonomous language and the second was to verify the existence of specialized professionals who support the production of corporate comics in Brazil. In addition, methods of production, distribution and utilization of comics in some corporate education programs had been also checked. The main hypothesis of this study was the strategic use of comics can contribute positively to improve the communication activities in the corporate environment. The results showed that comics had been used by important corporations like SEBRAE, ABNT, Metrô SP, Petrobrás, Telefonica, O Boticário, SENAI, Votorantim and others. In Brazil, there is a regular and well-organized production of corporate comics which is made by studios, authors and specialized publishers. These productions have occurred at least since 1994. The majority of these comics were distributed within companies or in restricted environments. On the other hand, there were also some publications which were distributed and sold in bookstores published in Graphic Novel format. Interestingly, some corporate comics had been published in digital media, as it was verified in the case of covenant between SEBRAE and ABNT. According to the results, the potential use of comics in corporate education was associated mainly to assist the processes of awareness, understanding and memorization of ideas and information. The strategic application of comics through comic strips and cartoons also facilitated the comprehension of ideas or concepts showed in classes/lectures and in texts with specific contents that were difficult to understand. The use of comics also showed the effect of breaking with excessive formality in communication between instructors and employees in some companies, resulting in the increase of employee\'s interests in the activities of the education programs. Furthermore, some elements used in the comics like the design of characters and graphic humor also showed a great potential as elements to assist the development of corporate education programs.

En la investigación “La comunicación interpersonal y la gestión organizacional en los trabajadores de la Compañía Americana de Conservas Pisco – Perú 2018”, Se ha elegido este tema puesto que la comunicación interpersonal es de suma importancia para los intereses de la empresa en el marco de expansión y crecimiento, considerando realizar este estudio puesto que serviría de buen sustento para implementar acciones de mejora con las miras futuras, el área de RRHH ha diagnosticado que es un aspecto en debilidad y que necesita ser abordado con mayor contundencia para poder brindar a los trabajadores mayor bienestar y tranquilidad respecto a la transparencia de la comunicación interpersonal y brindar a los trabajadores una mayor cercanía entre todos los puestos y mandos de la organización. El presente estudio se basó en el FODA institucional desarrollado por los investigadores La presente investigación presenta el siguiente problema de estudio, ¿De qué manera se relaciona la variable comunicación interpersonal y la variable gestión organizacional en los trabajadores de la compañía Americana de conservas Pisco – Perú 2018?, siendo su objetivo, Describir cómo se relaciona la variable comunicación interpersonal y la variable gestión organizacional en los trabajadores de la compañía Americana de conservas Pisco – Perú 2018 y su hipótesis , La variable comunicación interpersonal se relaciona significativamente con la variable gestión organizacional en los trabajadores de la compañía Americana de conservas Pisco – Perú 2018. La metodología planteada tiene su base en un Paradigma Positivista, cuyo enfoque es Cuantitativa y su estadística es no paramétrica, su tipo es aplicada, su diseño es correlacional y presenta un corte de criterio transversal, su método es hipotético – deductivo, la población y muestra 73 y 62 trabajadores de la empresa en estudio. Se utilizo el SPSS 25, Microsoft excell y la opción del Gmail – Form que son encuestas en línea los mismo que fueron remitidos a sus móviles y cuentas de correo Gmail para que presenten o remitan las respuestas del instrumento validado planteado en la investigación. Podemos llegar a la conclusión estadística que se comprobaron las hipótesis planteadas por el investigador “La variable comunicación interpersonal se relaciona significativamente con la variable gestión organizacional en los trabajadores de la compañía Americana de conservas Pisco – Perú 2018” Podemos afirmar que el aporte del presente estudio servirá para concientizar a los líderes de gestión la suma importancia de la comunicación interpersonal en la organización para que el personal pueda tener mayor recepción y entendimiento de aspectos relevantes de la empresa. Asimismo, para invertir en la colocación de hitos comunicacionales en la organización que garanticen la efectividad: Murales, Altavoces, Televisores, etc. Para alinear estrategias en las diferentes gestiones interdepartamentales que permitan trabajar la comunicación entre los colaboradores. We can reach the statistical conclusion that the hypotheses raised by the researcher were verified "The interpersonal communication variable is significantly related to the organizational management variable in the workers of the American company of preserves Pisco - Peru 2018" We can affirm that the contribution of this study will serve to make management leaders aware of the importance of interpersonal communication in the organization so that staff can have greater reception and understanding of relevant aspects of the company.
