The Economic Efficiency and Profitability of Social BanksMykhayliv, Dariya 08 1900 (has links)
Yes / The financial crisis of 2008 provides evidence for the instability of the conventional banking system. Social banks may present a viable alternative for conventional banks. This paper analyzes the performance of social banks related to the bank business model, economic efficiency, asset quality and stability by comparing social banks with banks where the difference is likely to be large, namely with the 30 global systemically important banks (G-SIBs) of the Financial Stability Board over the period 2000-2014. We also analyze the relative impact of the global financial crises on the bank performance. The performance of social banks and G-SIBs is surprisingly similar.

Oil price and bank performance in the Middle Eastern oil exporting countriesKaffash, Sepideh January 2014 (has links)
Banks as the most evident financial institutions which provide a range of financial services in their primary role as intermediary from lenders and borrowers of money to sophisticated tools concerned with credit and liquidity provision, risk management and remittance of funds play a vital role in the economy of countries. Measuring the performance of banks, and identifying the factors which impact it, is an issue of major interest for regulators, policy makers, stakeholders, investors and the general public. Oil price movement as an external factor influencing the performance of banks, may affect macroeconomic events which, in turn, influence cash flows significantly in the finance and banking industry. Examining the performance of banks and how oil price movement impact their performance significantly those operating in oil exporting countries, is of interest of bank managers and policy makers. It will help top level managers of banks to be aware of relationship between oil price movement and the performance of their banks and will help them in formulating better policies and strategies in taking on opportunities and avoiding possible risks which this movement may cause. Moreover, it will help policy makers in oil exporting countries to understand how the banking industry of an oil exporting country can reap benefits from economic booms as a consequence of an increase in the price of oil. Therefore, this thesis attempts to investigate the impact of oil price movement on the performance of banks under different operational styles in oil exporting countries. The sample is consisting of 98 commercial, investment and Islamic banks in eight Middle Eastern oil exporting (MEOE) countries during the period 2000-2011. The research applies a two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis to examine the impact of oil price movement on performance of banks. In the first stage, four different efficiency scores of banks operating in the MEOE countries are derived and compared. The empirical results suggest that overall, MEOE banking industries mostly suffer from poor usage of and mal-location of resources by management to produce outputs, rather than a failure in operating at the most productive scale. A low level of overall technical efficiency in the MEOE banking industry means that management has poor skills in controlling operating expenses, marketing activities, absorbing deposits and the monitoring and effective screening of borrowers. In the second stage, to find out the impact of oil price movement on the performance of banks, technical efficiency scores obtained from the first stage are regressed over the oil price movement variable and environmental variables. The empirical results show that while oil revenue impacts the efficiency of the banks directly, positive oil price shocks impact efficiency of banks indirectly, and through inflation and economic growth. These findings suggest that when there is an increase in the price of oil, banks operating in oil exporting countries will derive benefit from the surplus income injected into the economy and their performance will be enhanced.

The Effectiveness of the Basel Accords : Evidence from European BanksPersson, Alfred, Marcusson, Petra January 2019 (has links)
Purpose:The purpose is to investigate the adequacy of the Basel Accords to fulfill the underlying ideas of reducing risk and stabilizing the financial sector, or if it allows banks to use regulatory arbitrage to maintain a desired productive efficiency- and risk level. Methodology:A two-step analysis is constructed where each bank’s efficiency is first estimated, followed by a panel data regression on the efficiency-score and on a proxy for bank risk. Conclusion:We found evidence supporting that the third Basel Accord have been more effective, by a reduced risk as a consequence of both an increased capital adequacy ratio and the implementation. However, we cannot confirm that the capital requirements inhibit bank efficiency, but there is evidence of an impaired efficiency since the implementation of the third accord, suggesting that the supervision, for instance, has a weakening effect on efficiency. Moreover, there are also implication of the strengthened capital requirements, in terms of quantity and quality of capital, more efficiently fulfilling the accords purpose of reducing risk.

Eficiência do sistema bancário brasileiro em 2014: uma análise DEA-SBM / Efficiency of the Brazilian banking system in 2014: A DEA-SBM analysisBranco, Adriel Martins de Freitas 02 June 2016 (has links)
This study has used the DEA-SBM technique to evaluate the efficiency of Brazilian banks in 2014 from the perspective of the three most frequent approaches in this type of evaluation: intermediation, production and profitability approaches. The efficiency scores were evaluated by quintile and the median Mann-Whitney test as (1) the origin of the capital; (2) public x private; (3) size of the banks; (4) of banks operating segment and (5) the ratings of these institutions. To develop this study took hold six methodological steps. The first step was to survey the financial information of each bank, and consolidated for the year 2014. In the second stage we selected the variables for each approach, making each model. In the third step were performed exclusions of DMUs with negative variables or without information. The fourth step was the classification of banks. To sort by size banks was used as a criterion the total assets, dividing them into quartiles. The fifth step was to identify the efficiency scores, DEA via PIM Software. The data were evaluated according to the DEA-SBM method. The sixth and final step was to analyze the results and occurred after obtaining scores. The results of amostram were analyzed by the use of both techniques. Initially, we applied the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to verify the distribution of the median for each approach followed a normal distribution. The analysis allowed to draw conclusions and ten showed that banks federal public capital, Micro Porte, the Retail segment (except for the intermediation approach) and AAA-rated note were the most efficient.

The bank efficiency analysis is an important issue for most economies, given the importance of this sector in the intermediation of financial resources. This work sheds light the question of how are carried out bank efficiency analysis using frontier techniques. Thus provides the application of meta-analysis methodology in 47 previous studies applying frontier techniques in measuring efficiency in banks. It was found as major frontier techniques: Data envelopment analysis (DEA) in their formulations CCR, BCC and SBM and the Stochastic Frontier. To understanding the use of the techniques presented in, this paper go through the literature review of theoretical explanations and a statistical analysis of the relationship with the variables: year of publication, the approaches in banks, and the orientation for measuring the efficiency used, in other words if the study considered the frontier techniques with orientation to input or output. The results indicate a greater tendency to use the techniques DEA BCC primarily oriented input and in recent years DEA SBM without orientation.

Performance Evaluation Of Banks And Banking Groups: Turkey CaseOztorul, Guliz 01 October 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Bank performance is one of the vital issues for the healthy functioning of the Turkish economy. This study aims to measure performance levels of the banks in Turkey and to find the factors affecting those levels for the period of 2006-2010. Although the measures evaluating bank performance are ample in amounts we choose two different approaches: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) measuring bank efficiency and CAMELS analysis. DEA is carried out in different levels: first for top 14 banks in the economy / then separating the banks as the state banks, the domestic private banks and the foreign private banks. Also long term and short term, and public and non-public assets and liabilities distinctions are made in the analyses. The bank performance measures obtained from DEA and CAMELS analysis are compared and the factors affecting the performances of the Turkish banks are analyzed. The results show that high efficiency levels of the state banks decrease when the public assets and liabilities are excluded. The state banks and domestic private banks have high CAMELS' / ratios, while the foreign banks have low ones. Both the bank-specific and macroeconomic factors, like ownership type, publicly trading and ATM net, play important roles in the determination of the efficiency levels of the banks in Turkey.

MEASURING COMMERCIAL BANK PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICANGU, BRYAN, Mesfin, Tsegaye January 2009 (has links)

This paper offers to measure efficiency of banks in Sub Saharan Africa and its determining input andout put factors on two fonts. At this purpose, we applied the first font; Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) for assessing efficiency level. The actual and target level of inputs/outputs to foster efficiencyare shown in the results. Secondly, the banks ratio analysis measuring banks performance throughreturns volatility for each bank, asset utilization and provision for bad and doubtful debts over thestudy period are all used as tools for this analysis. Our results suggest that Sub Saharan AfricanBanks are about 98.35% efficient. We are aware that the level of efficiency could be subject to up anddown swing if environmental factors influencing banks efficiency where taken into consideration. Finally, our result (DEA) is more sensitive to loans, other liabilities, other non interest expense, securities and deposit.
