The effect of an intervention program on cohesion with ninth grade female basketball teamsSmith, Joseph W. 25 July 1996 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if team cohesion could be enhanced
for 9th grade female basketball teams with the implementation of a 14-week
intervention program. The intervention program was designed from cohesion
building strategies proposed in the literature with the help of three coaches and a
leading sport psychologist in the field of cohesion. 41 ninth grade female
basketball players belonging to four teams participated in the study. The Group
Environment Questionnaire was used to measure cohesion. It was administered
on the third week of the season and again at the end. The data were analyzed
using both the individual and the team as the unit of analysis. The findings
varied according to which unit of analysis was used. When the team was used,
no posttest differences were found, however, the effect sizes suggested that the
intervention was effective for the task subscales of the GEQ. A lack of
statistical power for the team analysis greatly reduced the probability of finding
that the meaningful differences were statistically significant. When the
individual was used, the intervention was found to be statistically detrimental
for the task subscales. The effect sizes supported this finding. The qualitative
data that was collected suggested that the coaches believed the intervention had
practical utility, and was effective. While this study did not empirically show
that the intervention was effective, it did demonstrate that the intervention is
practical enough to implement. Furthermore, the qualitative data and the effect
sizes for the team analysis provide some evidence that the intervention may have
been effective for the task dimension of team cohesion. Therefore this study
produced an intervention that can be used as a starting point for future cohesion

There is a general consensus among sport coaches and practitioners that it is better to work with a cohesive team. Research on cohesion has provided positive links between cohesion and performance as well as the overall well-being of the team and its members. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a cohesion-building programme under an Action Research paradigm. The Group Environment Questionnaire, in parallel with focus group discussions were used to assist in the development and evaluation of a cohesion-building programme tailored to the specific needs of the Rhodes University men’s basketball 1st team. The team is known to be a good team but it was missing something that made it become great. Fostering higher cohesiveness was deemed to be the missing link to the chain of success. Various changes were brought to the 1) team structure, 2) team processes, 3) team environment to enhance the team’s cohesiveness levels. It was found that the programme was positive and powerful in that it accelerated the process of cohesion building within the team. It was also found that the programme had the power to transcend demographical barriers and unite people from diverse backgrounds. Finally, the programme increased the team’s performance level and enabled it to achieve objectives that were never achieved by any other men’s basketball team at Rhodes University before. Naturally there are going to be some ups and downs, especially if you have individuals trying to achieve at a high level. But when we stepped in between the lines, we knew what we were capable of doing. When a pressure situation presented itself, we were plugged into one another like a cohesive unit. That’s why we were able to come back so often and win so many close games. And that’s why we were able to beat more talented team. - Michael Jordan (former Chicago Bulls; NBA Hall of Famer).

Efficacy, cohesion, and sport performance have been shown to vary longitudinally (Carron et al.,
2002; Shea & Howell, 2000). Tripartite efficacy is a specific area concerning efficacy beliefs
within dyads that has recently grown in popularity (Jackson et al., 2013); yet no longitudinal
research of intra-dyad beliefs exists. This case study examined longitudinal variations of
tripartite efficacy beliefs, cohesion, and individual performances of six basketball players on a
high school team over seven data collection points during a competitive season. The results
indicated similar variations between participants' tripartite efficacy components and individual
