This study proposed to determine if there are different personality traits between police officers, Department of Children's Services (DCS) intake and carrier workers. It was proposed that differences may indicate that investigations done by DCS be delegated as a law enforcement function whereas family preservation services be the responsibility of DCS.

Thesis advisor: Virginia Reinburg / Thesis advisor: Sarah G. Ross / Bernardino Ochino (1487-1564) has long been a misinterpreted historical figure. Even to specialists Ochino’s Siena is less well-known than Luther’s Wittenburg or Calvin’s Geneva. A once-famous Capuchin preacher turned “heretic,” Ochino was forced into exile in 1542 upon the re-establishment of the Roman Inquisition. Ochino’s life has often been defined in terms of success and failure, his exile as a personal tragedy, and his theological ideas as unclassifiable. An examination of some of his most important letters as well as a selection of his sermons, dialogues, and his catechism, however, illustrate that Ochino’s exile actually provided him with opportunities that allowed him to become the teacher of Italian reformed thought to his followers in Italy and throughout Europe. This was made possible largely by his now unimpeded access to the printing press, the medium to which he resorted after his preaching was silenced. From his state of exile he, quite literally, helped to compose the Italian Reformation and his story speaks to the growing interest among historians in conceptualizing exile and mobility as preconditions of religious transformation and the international Reformation. Ochino’s corpus of works reveals a man intimately engaged with the Protestant Reformation throughout Europe. His writings betray the influence of Luther and Calvin, while maintaining a certain Italian “anti-dogmatism” that historians have long recognized in Ochino’s work and in the Italian Reformation more broadly. Ochino’s eclecticism is a reminder that the Italian Reformation must be appreciated in its own right, as a crucial element of the international Reformation and not simply as a catalyst for the Counter or Catholic Reformation, as it is often portrayed. Ochino’s works—printed abroad and frequently transported clandestinely back to Italy—reveal the existence of a community of men and women who hoped to be agents of religious reform, not simply heretics who hoped to avoid the gaze of the Inquisition. Theirs was a religion that begged to be lived, not one that was meant to be hidden. Ochino was their leader.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of communication with elderly mental health clients regarding medication concordance.

Every day, children are removed from their homes of origin by Children & Family Services and placed into foster care. When the county foster homes become full, private foster family agencies are relied upon to take in the overflow. For a variety of reasons, private agencies are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain sufficient numbers of foster parents to house all of these children. This is a pressing problem in the social work field as, without proper placement options, many children will simply fall through the cracks in the system. The purpose of this research was to explore and address the many concerns surrounding foster parenting, thereby improving foster parent recruitment and retention. Surveys were completed by foster family agency staff (both private and county), current and former foster parents, and people who have considered foster parenting but later changed their minds. Qualitative data gleaned from these surveys revealed improvement that could be made in foster parent recruitment and retention for both private and county agencies. This research has the potential to increase the pool of available foster homes and save the lives of many children.

The following study attempted to operationalize the willingness to work hard component of Hogan’s RAW model of employability. Willingness to Work Hard, the W in the model, appears to be multi-faceted; a qualitative synthesis of themes suggests that the construct may be dispositional. I examined proactive personality by using the G ProACT scale to help understand the multi-dimensionality of Willingness to Work Hard. Taking initiative, rigidness, planning, and anticipating opportunities were the four subscales that emerged. The purpose of my study was to collect evidence of construct validity for the proposed measure. I examined the relationship between the G ProACT measure and discriminant and convergent variables. A survey was distributed among CSUSB students that contained the G ProACT measure, demographic related items, and other established measures to gather construct validity. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with 488 participants indicated a lack of support for the hypothesized model. Specifically, the CFA revealed that three of the four factors did not relate to the presumed construct of proactive personality. Rigidness showed no relationship whereas anticipating opportunities and planning demonstrated marginal relationships to the underlying construct. Follow-up analyses indicated that taking initiative was the only subscale deemed as strongly factorable. Findings suggest a need to further explore taking initiative to determine if the measure appropriately captures the dispositional nature of Willingness to Work Hard. Future research should continue to examine if proactive personality or other motivational constructs are an appropriate fit for the RAW model.
