Após as discussões metodológicas iniciais, fez-se um levantamento sobre a expansão dos “estudos do livro”. Em seguida, foi estudada a situação do livro no país, com foco no descaso histórico com as coleções públicas nacionais, além do exame de alguns aspectos pontuais, como a história do ex libris e da encadernação. A partir de um amplo levantamento bibliográfico, tentou-se traçar um breve histórico da bibliofilia no Brasil, não só identificando os colecionadores, mas também o destino de suas coleções, destacando-se alguns dos mais importantes atores. A partir da literatura mais recente e de contatos previamente estabelecidos, foram mapeados os bibliófilos contemporâneos e, quando possível, contactados e entrevistados. A segunda parte da tese, i.e., a análise de diversos aspectos que compõem a oeconomia da bibliofilia, deu-se primordialmente a partir das conversas com esses bibliófilos, livreiros e das observações feitas in loco nas cidades visitadas. Tentou-se demonstrar não só o fazer do bibliófilo em seus mais variados aspectos, mas seu papel social, suas implicações na rede formada pela bibliofilia e fora dela. Para tanto, foram discutidos aspectos simbólicos, estéticos e econômicos, do fascínio da obra rara à importância de bibliotecas particulares. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In this thesis, historical, social and communicational aspects of bibliophily were explored. After the initial methodological discussions, an assessment of the expansion of the book studies field is presented. Following that, the contemporary situation of the book in Brazil, with focus on the historical negligence towards national public collections, as well as the study of specific aspects such as the history of ex libris and of binding. A brief history of bibliofily in Brazil was then written, founded on a thorough bibliographical survey, with the identification of book collectors as well as the destiny of their collections – short studies were developed for some of the more relevant actors. Based on recent literature and on contacts previously established, contemporary bibliophiles were identified and, whenever possible, contacted and interviewed. The second part of the thesis, that is, the analysis of aspects that integrate the oeconomia of bibliophily, was based primarily on consultations with the bibliophiles, as well as with booksellers, and observations in loco of the cities that were visited. This thesis presents not only the bibliophile‟s actions in its different facets, but also its social relevance, and the repercussion of bibliophily inside and outside its network. In order to accomplish this investigation, symbolic, esthetic and economic aspects were studied, from the spell cast by rare books to the relevance of private collections.

Embora constantemente as obras raras estejam associadas unicamente à idade do material, em certas ocasiões aspectos mais sutis, como erros de impressão, ou aspectos de ornamentação do suporte, como a encadernação, podem tornar uma obra rara. Em bibliotecas, existe o valor institucional do material, em que se pesa o valor da obra em determinado contexto. Esta pesquisa buscou levantar conceitos que busquem a definição de critérios para caracterização de uma determinada obra como rara. Para tanto, em uma primeira etapa, foram pesquisadas as literaturas que forneciam dados para o estabelecimento de critérios de raridade, bem como especialistas no assunto, com o intuito de fornecer uma visão interdisciplinar da área. Em uma segunda etapa pretendeu-se realizar uma pesquisa entre bibliotecários responsáveis por coleções no Distrito Federal, com o intuito de verificar se os conceitos verificados na literatura são aplicados na prática de seleção nessas instituições. Foram pesquisadas ao todo oito instituições, sendo a pesquisa realizada in loco. Os resultados revelaram que, entre as bibliotecas pesquisadas, os critérios para a seleção de obras raras adotados variaram muito, o que chama a atenção principalmente para o fato de que em muitos casos existe o valor local, ou seja, aquelas obras que possuem valor somente na própria instituição. Outro fator relevante constatado foi a ausência de critérios de seleção em algumas bibliotecas, fato preocupante pois esse documento é a base para uma seleção de obras raras eficiente. Constatou-se também a ausência de cursos de formação em obras raras por parte dos bibliotecários responsáveis pelas coleções, fato que pode ser explicado pelo baixo número de cursos disponíveis sobre o assunto no Brasil. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / To define what can be considered a rare book is not a simple task. Although rare books are constantly related to the age of the material, sometimes more subtle aspects such as printing errors, or ornamental aspects of mediums, like binding, may be a rare work. In libraries, there is the institutional value of the material, which weighs the value of work in a given context. This research contains some concepts to define criteria to characterize a rare work. To do so, in a first phase, we surveyed the literature that provided data to establish criteria of rarity, as well some specialists. In a second step we intend to conduct a survey among librarians of rare book collections in Distrito Federal, Brazil, in order to verify if the concepts found in the literature are applied in those institutions. We surveyed eight institutions, and the research was made in loco. The results revealed that among the institutions the criteria for selection of rare books adopted varied greatly from institution to institution, which draws attention mainly to the fact that in many cases there is a local value, ie, those works that have value only in the institution itself. Another relevant factor noted was the absence of selection politics in some libraries, a worrisome because this document is the basis for an efficient selection of rare books. The survey revealed also a lack of training courses in rare books by the librarian responsible for collections, which may be explained by the low number of available courses on this subject in Brazil.

This thesis examines the book and archival holdings of the Cottonian Collection – a national designated eighteenth-century collection of fine art and books – between 1791 and 1816, the period of William Cotton II’s custodianship. Prior to this thesis, the Cottonian Collection has not been the subject of a full-length academic study. Whilst the art holdings have received some attention, the book and archival contents have not been examined. This thesis addresses this imbalance by conducting a thorough examination of the archival holdings and the history of the book collection. Taking the actions of the collection’s penultimate private owner, William Cotton II, as its primary focus this thesis examines the curatorial practices of acquisition, preservation and disposal through three key lenses: the presentation of the collection as a symbol of gentlemanly status, the evolution of Enlightenment cosmopolitanism thought, and the rise of Anglican Evangelicalism during this period. In doing so, this thesis considers the effects of the broader societal, political and religion changes on a national designated collection during a period defined by ideological threat and revolutionary warfare. In the process, it seeks to embed the history of the Cottonian Collection within the broader context of late-eighteenth-century book collecting practices.

A Sociedade dos Cem Bibliófilos do Brasil (SCBB) produziu 23 títulos em edições bem acabadas artesanalmente, com tiragem limitada e ilustradas com gravuras originais de artistas nacionais renomados. A coleção da SCBB da BCE é formada pelos livros que pertenceram à quatro bibliófilos, ao todo são 37 exemplares descritos nesta pesquisa. O estudo dessa coleção parte do estudo dos aspectos materiais do livro a partir de uma perspectiva do colecionismo bibliográfico. A metodologia usada para o estudo da trajetória desses livros no Acervo de Obras raras da BCE parte das três fases apresentadas por Alberti (2005) para o estudo dos objetos das coleções: a primeira fase se refere à coleta e procedência; a segunda diz respeito à história do objeto dentro do acervo; a terceira contempla as exposições e as consultas do acervo pelo público. Este estudo também realça dois aspectos da coleção da BCE: as encadernações e as ilustrações, que conferem unicidade e valor artístico a esses exemplares. A SCBB se destaca como um dos grupos mais importantes que produziram edições luxuosas no Brasil. Além disso, esse grupo incentivou a participação ativa dos artistas na confecção dos livros e fomentou a produção de gravuras de teor artístico em âmbito nacional. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation studies the books edited by the Sociedade dos Cem Bibliófilos do Brasil(1943-1969), kept in the the Rare Books Sector, at Universidade de Brasília’s Central Library – BCE/UnB. The Sociedade dos Cem Bibliófilos do Brasil (SCBB) has published 23 titles, finely handicrafted, on limited edition, illustrated with original engravings by famous brazilian artists. BCE’s collection was gathered from the personal libraries of four deceased SCBB’s members. It is composed of 37 books, all of wich are described in this research. We will approache the collection from a bibliophile point of view. The methodology used to study the path of these books employs Alberti’s (2005) three phases for the study of objects: the first phase is related to the gathering of the objetcts and their origin; the second phase relates to the history of the object inside the institutions where it was kept; and the third addresses the issue of the object’s interaction with the public (exhibitions, consultations, etc). This study also highlights two other aspects of BCE’s collection: the bidings and illustrations, that bestow unique artistic value to these books. SCBB stands out as one of the most important groups that produced luxury editions in Brazil. This group also encouraged the active participation of artists in the production of the book and promoted artistic printing nationwide.
