This research has as an object of study the general notations the artist leaves behind, as traces of his creation, and that, from different origins served as the basis of study for this thesis. The methodology adopted is the Genetic Criticism, with a theoretical approach which sustains itself in the dialog of semiotics in the lines of Pierce and the thinking of Edgar Morin, which is also discussed by Salles in her discussions about the creative process as a construction network. Initially we use the notebooks and notations of European traveling artists from the first half of the 19th century, who produced very rich works in Brazil. Following, we establish a dialog with Van Gogh thru the letters he wrote his brother Théo. However, we search within this expressive communication of the artist and his relation with the History of Art, which the presence is extremely powerful in all of the materials and which was domineering in the construction of his poetic project. Finally, the research turns to our contemporary days. Two notebooks, kindly lended by Cris Bierrenbach, a young artist from São Paulo, constitute significant material for the analysis of the creative process thru the theoretic principles suggested by the Genetic Criticism, which is based on semiotic / Este trabalho se propõe a estudar o processo criativo a partir das macrorrelações de comunicação estabelecidas pelo artista no contexto social, cultural e histórico e das relações internas em que se desenvolvem intensos diálogos com ele mesmo ou com o outro. Essa pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo as anotações de modo geral que o artista vai deixando, como rastros de criação, e que, de origens diversas, serviram de base para os estudos desenvolvidos nesta tese. A metodologia adotada é a da crítica genética, com abordagem teórica que se sustenta no diálogo da semiótica de linha peirceana e o pensamento de Edgar Morin, assim como é desenvolvido por Salles nas discussões sobre o processo de criação como rede em construção. Inicialmente utilizamos cadernos e anotações de artistas viajantes europeus da primeira metade do século XIX que produziram um rico material no Brasil. Na seqüência, estabelecemos um diálogo com as cartas que Van Gogh escreveu a seu irmão Théo, mas buscando, nesta expressiva comunicação do artista a sua relação com a história da arte, cuja presença é marcante e forte em todo o material. Finalmente, os estudos se voltam para o nosso momento contemporâneo.
