Para isto, o trabalho examina as origens do modelo produtivista no setor agrícola e as principais causas de seu esgotamento. Aborda-se o discurso da agricultura sustentável e o papel da biotecnologia dentro deste novo padrão que se propõe para a agricultura. Posteriormente, apresenta-se uma caracterização da agricultura cubana desde 1959 até início dos noventa. Analisam-se as principais políticas e programas do Estado cubano para reduzir as perdas, substituir importações e alcançar a auto-suficiência alimentar da população. Finalmente, o trabalho coloca ênfase no desenvolvimento recente da biotecnologia agrícola em Cuba. Neste sentido, são analisadas as dificuldades e desafios para sua assimilação no novo contexto econômico cubano. Conclui-se que dadas as dificuldades econômicas do país neste momento, é pouco provável que a biotecnologia consiga responder às amplas necessidades do setor agrícola cubano no curto período / Abstract: This work presents an analyses about the recent evolution and the perspectives of agro-biotechnology in Cuba. It examinec; the origins of the productivist model in the agricultural sector and the main causes of their exhaustion. The speech of the sustainable agriculture is analyzed, as weJl as the role of biotechnology for the development of new pattem the agriculture production. lt presents a brief characterization of the Cuban agriculture from 1959 until the beginning of the nineties.
