Study of aldehydes, Co and characterization of particles resulting from oil contamination of aircraft bleed air

Nayyeri Amiri, Shahin January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering / Byron Jones / Contamination of aircraft bleed air with engine oil and/or hydraulic fluid results in a “fume event” in the aircraft cabin. Exposure to contaminated bleed air may have acute and/or chronic adverse health effects based on the intensity of various chemicals which are released during such a fume event. ASHRAE Standard 161, Air Quality within Commercial Aircraft, includes a requirement for bleed air sensors to detect contamination from lubricating oil. One potential approach to meeting this requirement is through particle detection. In the research reported here, the end goal is to provide data needed to develop an automated detection apparatus for contaminated bleed air through oil particle detection. Consequently, the type and concentration of different chemicals as well as the number and size distribution of particles were determined for bleed air with different rates of contamination under various turbine engine operating conditions. Multiple fume events were simulated by using a four-part experimental program to develop a detailed characterization of particles that result when bleed air is contaminated with lubricating oil. Test results show that oil contamination in the compressor will result in a fog of very fine droplets in the bleed air under most operating conditions. With moderately high contamination rates at elevated power levels (high bleed air temperature) the concentration distribution and particle size does not vary much with power (temperature) and generally depends on the rate of contamination. Moreover, at elevated power levels, the peak particle concentration takes place in the range of 50 to 70 nanometers and the bulk of the particles form at less than 150 nanometers. At very low contamination rates very ultrafine particles can be generated in the size of 10 nanometers or less. As a result, detection is needed for a range of sizes ranging from about 100 nanometers to 10 nanometers.

Enhancing Multispectral Imagery of Ancient Documents

Griffiths, Trace A 01 May 2011 (has links)
Multispectral imaging (MSI) provides a wealth of imagery data that, together with modern signal processing techniques, facilitates the enhancement of document images. In this thesis, four topic areas are reviewed and applied to ancient documents. They are image fusion, matched filters, bleed-through removal, and shadow removal. These four areas of focus provide useful tools for papyrologists studying the digital imagery of documents. The results presented form a strong case for the utility of MSI data over the use of a single image captured at any given wavelength of light.

Numerical Simulation of Entrainment and Recirculating flow at the Base of a Truncated Aerospike Nozzle with Supplementary Base Flow

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: The aerospike nozzle belongs to the class of altitude compensating nozzles making it a strong candidate for Space Shuttle Main Engines. Owing to their higher efficiency compared to conventional bell nozzles, the aerospike nozzles are being studied extensively and are being used for many Single State to Orbit (SSTO) designs. A rocket engine nozzle with altitude compensation, such as the aerospike, consumes less fuel than a rocket engine with a bell nozzle. Aerospike nozzles are huge and are often difficult to construct and have to be truncated in order to make them feasible for application in a rocket propulsion system. Consequently, truncation of the aerospike leads to pressure loss under the base, which in-turn decreases the overall thrust produced by the rocket nozzle. To overcome this loss, a technique called base bleed is implemented in which a secondary jet is made to flow through the base of the truncated portion. This thesis uses dynamic pressure contour plots to find out the ideal base bleed mass flow rate to avoid base recirculation in 10 %, 20 % and 30 % truncated aerospike nozzles. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 2017

Recurrent Gastric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis

Al Momani, Laith A., Abughanimeh, Omar, Shipley, Lindsey C., Phemister, Jennifer, Swenson, James, Young, Mark 21 June 2018 (has links)
Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder characterized by a mutation of the neurofibromin 1 (NF1) gene, resulting in increased susceptibility for multiple tumors, namely, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs)-the most common types of mesenchymal neoplasms in the gastrointestinal tract. Despite these tumors' predilection for the stomach, it seems to be the least likely part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to be affected in cases of neurofibromatosis. Herein, we report a case of a 61-year-old male patient with known neurofibromatosis, who presented with acute blood loss anemia due to a recurrent gastric GIST, requiring partial gastrectomy due to its size and multiple recurrences.

Bleed air oil contamination particulate characterization

Roth, Jake January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering / Mohammad H. Hosni / Byron W. Jones / Gas turbine engine oil is contaminating the bleed air of an aircraft with enough frequency and intensity that health concerns are of public interest. While previous work measured micro particles and used only a simulator, this work mainly consists of measurements in the nanoparticle and ultrafine range using both the simulator and two different gas turbine engines. No previous research has been conducted using working jet engines to simulate a bleed air system and characterize the oil particulate contamination. Oil was injected into a bleed air simulator and an Allison 250 CC18 turbine engine in order to observe the particle size distributions resulting from thermal degradation and was measured with three particle sizing counters and an FTIR. The aerosol size distributions are given for various temperature and pressure ranges consistent with the process conditions associated with the bleed air in a commercial aircraft. Particle sizes of approximately 80nm to 100nm were observed at temperatures over 200°C while particles similar to injection distributions and smaller than measureable size were observed at lower power settings. Temperature is thought to be the controlling factor affecting particle size above 200°C while blade shear is likely the dominant factor for lower temperatures. The bleed air simulator produced results similar to the gas turbine engine results at higher temperatures, but did not replicate the size characteristics at lower temperatures. The observed particles are ultrafine and situated in the size range that may impact health safety more than larger particles.

Improving Advanced Practice Nurses' Knowledge of Cerebral Hemorrhage Assessment and Management

Lombardo, Kimberly Marie 01 January 2018 (has links)
Cerebral hemorrhages are a type of stroke causing bleeding in the brain from a ruptured brain vessel or an aneurysm. In the emergency department (ED), advanced practice nurses (APNs') play a pivotal role in identifying cerebral hemorrhages. Many APNs' lack the skills necessary to assess, diagnose, and manage this type of stroke. A delay in diagnosis of cerebral hemorrhages carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality and can lead to lifelong disability or death. The framework of this project is the Patricia Benner theory of novice-to-expert, which is a 5-step approach designed to strengthen nursing skills with the goal of developing nurses into experts in the neuroscience field. This project addressed whether a validated educational program for APNs' in the ED will increase knowledge to improve the assessment, diagnosis, and management of the cerebral hemorrhage stroke patient. A panel of experts were provided a comprehensive educational plan with multiple case scenarios. A 5-point Likert questionnaire was administered and a statistical analysis was performed. Results indicated the panel strongly agreed that the educational initiative increased APNs' knowledge and fostered a culture of change for APNs' in the ED. Potential implications of this educational module will be considered in satellite organizations impacting APNs' growth and improving patient care throughout the health system. The project determined that the significance of social change included increased APNs' knowledge and advanced professional growth, lowers mortality rates, and promotes an evidence-based quality improvement project.
