Fundamental Chemistry of 1,2-Dihydro-1,2-AzaborinesLamm, Ashley, Lamm, Ashley January 2012 (has links)
Benzene and its derivatives are ubiquitous in chemical research, with applications ranging from material science to biomedical research. 1,2-Dihydro-1,2-azaborine is a benzene mimic which replaces a CC bond with a BN bond. The basic science and applications of 1,2-azaborines is relatively underdeveloped. This thesis expands the fundamental understanding of 1,2-azaborines. Chapter I describes the air and moisture stability of 1,2-azaborines. Chapter II introduces nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions that the parent 1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborine will undergo. Chapter III discusses a trimerization reaction that 1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborine can perform, which is unique from benzene. Chapter IV examines a novel protection free synthesis of 1,2-azaborines, which provides a more direct route to functionalized 1,2-azaborines. Chapter V discusses the novel deprotection of the N-silicon using an amide, giving one of the first 1,2-azaborine pharmaceutical mimics. Finally, chapter VI summarized miscellaneous contributions I have made to the basic science of 1,2-azaborines.

Fabrication and measurement of graphene electrochemical microelectrodesGoodwin, Stefan January 2016 (has links)
The electrochemical properties of graphene were investigated using a novel and clean method to fabricate device structures with mechanically exfoliated graphene samples. Graphene is known as being particularly sensitive to both contaminating fabrication methods and the substrate it is placed on, with these effects being detrimental to accurate research into the fundamental properties and sensing applications of graphene. This thesis presents micron scale graphene electrodes that have not been subject to polymer contamination or micro-lithography methods. The effect of utilising atomically flat hexagonal boron nitride as a substrate material was investigated, believed to be the first example of this for graphene electrochemical measurements. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrated the expected steady-state behaviour for microelectrodes in the hemispherical diffusion regime. The reduction of IrCl62- in weak KCl electrolytes was studied to investigate the electron transfer characteristics of the graphene devices and the reproducibility of the measurements. Average values of the standard rate constant, k0 and the transfer coefficient, alpha were found to be 3.04 ± 0.78 ×10-3 cms-1 and 0.272 ± 0.024 respectively. These values differ significantly from previous similar studies, with the effect of reduced charge doping from the substrate and the potential dependence of the density of electronic states thought to account for the differences. Despite the clean fabrication methods, a relatively large variation between separate devices was found, highlighting an inherent variation in the properties of graphene samples.

The boron content of British Columbia soils and the boron fertilizer value of tourmaline rockFennell, Edwin John January 1947 (has links)
Part I. The Boron Content of British Columbia Soils
British Columbia soils were analyzed for total and available boron. Peace River soils showed significantly higher total contents than did soils from the rest of the province. Lower Fraser Valley soils were low in total boron.
One hundred and twenty-four surface soils showed available boron contents ranging from 0.0 to 22.0 p.p.m. Lime additions seemed to lower the available boron content of certain Fraser Valley Soils.
Part II. Investigations Concerning the Possibility of Using Tourmaline Rock as a Boron Fertilizer.
A Tourmaline rock supplied by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company seemed to offer little value as a boron fertllizer. / Land and Food Systems, Faculty of / Graduate

OECD/CSNI ISP NR. 43 Rapid Boron Dilution Transient Tests For Code Verification Post Test Calculation With CFX-4Gavrilas, M., Höhne, T. January 2001 (has links)
The need of the experimental support for validation of the computational tools to be applied to analyze the mixing of diluted slugs has been recognized in various countries. The test series for the International Standard Problem ISP-43 provides a platform for experiences to be applied to the simulation of a well-defined test series. Test A and B of the UM2x4 loop test facility were calculated with the CFD Code CFX-4.3. Sensitivity studies were made to analyze the used turbulence model and numerical errors. The results show good agreement with the experimental data for both tests.
