Measurement of the shape of the boson rapidity distribution for ρρ̄→Z/γ*→e⁺e⁻+X events produced at √s = 1.96 TeV

Ding, Pengfei January 2014 (has links)
The measurement of the shape of the Z boson rapidity distribution for drell-yan events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV is presented in this thesis. Data collected with the D0 detector during the whole RunII period of the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider are used. By using these data with an integrated luminosity of up to L = 9.86~$fb^{-1}$, the uncertainties on the rapidity distribution in the forward region are significantly reduced compared with previous measurements. The measurement is made for events with electron-positron mass 66 < M(ee) < 111 GeV. Predictions of Next-to-Leading-Order(NLO) QCD theory with CTEQ and MSTW parton distribution functions (PDFs) are found to agree well with the data over the full rapidity range.

Search for the Higgs boson via the H → b¯b decay mode, in the boosted regime on the ATLAS experiment

O'Brien, Brendan Joseph January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents details of the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson, in the low mass region (100 ≤ MH < 150 GeV), with the ATLAS detector at CERN. In this range, a Higgs boson may be produced in association with a W or Z-boson and decay predominantly to two b-quarks (H → b¯b). Specifically events having large Higgs boson transverse momentum (pT > 200 GeV) and large recoiling W- boson transverse momentum (pT > 200 GeV) are considered as a means to reduce the contribution from background processes. In this high pT (boosted) regime, novel jet-substructure techniques are applied to the reconstructed jets resulting from the Higgs boson decay. In order to use these jet-substructure techniques, b-tagging efficiency scale factors in the jet-substructure regime have also been derived for the first time. Details of their derivation are presented for many b- tagging algorithms, with 14.3 fb¯¹ of ATLAS proton-proton collision data in 2012 at √s = 8 TeV. These, and their associated systematic uncertainties, are then applied to the Higgs boson search. No significant measurement of Higgs boson production was made, based on 20.4 fb¯¹ of ATLAS proton-proton collision data in 2012 at √s = 8 TeV. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, an exclusion limit of 6.12 x σSM was found at the 95% confidence level, and a signal strength of 0:93 ± 2:63 was measured, consistent with both background-only and signal (Standard Model Higgs boson) plus background hypotheses.

Recherche du Boson de Higgs se désintégrant en deux leptons taus dans le canal τlepτhad dans l'expérience ATLAS avec les données à 13 TeV du LHC / Search of the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into two lepton taus with the Run2 data of ATLAS detector in LHC

Ayoub, Mohamad Kassem 23 November 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, I show my contribution to the search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson decaying into two tau leptons in the tlepthad sub-channel. I contributed to the different stages of this analysis. First, I worked on the development of the framework used to produce analysis files that contain the information necessary for this study. I also participated in the development of the framework used to introduce the predictions of the background for that channel, test the agreement between the predictionsand the ATLAS data, and on the production of files used in the final statistical analysis. I also worked on the statistical model, which takes into account the statistical and systematic errors to extract a measure of the signal strength for the Higgs coupling channel to leptons. My contribution to the improvement of reconstruction of a hadronic tau, using algorithms that identify photon conversion traces from the decay of neutral pions, is also detailed.

Measurement of the W charge asymmetry in production with jets using 5 inverse-femtobarns of data measured at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with CMS

Lawson, Philip Daniel 22 January 2016 (has links)
A measurement of the electron charge asymmetry in p+→W production in association with jets at sqrt{s}=7 TeV is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of L=5fb^-1 recorded by the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The sample represents a large increase in statistical precision with respect to previous CMS results and describes a first study of charge asymmetry measured in p+p→W+1 jet events. Full comparisons to previous results and theoretical predictions are provided and recommendations for extending the analysis to produce valuable input for future PDF models are made.

Raman Spectroscopy Of Glasseswith High And Broad Raman Gain In The Boson Peak Region

Guo, Yu 01 January 2006 (has links)
This thesis investigates Raman spectra of novel glasses and their correlation with structure for Raman gain applications. Raman gain for all-optical amplification by fibers depends significantly on the cross section for spontaneous Raman scattering allowing to compare signal strength and spectral coverage. We also investigate the relationship between glass structure and the Boson peak (enhancement of the low-frequency vibrational density of states) and report new inelastic neutron scattering spectra for niobium-phosphate glasses. Polarization resolved Raman spectra of glasses based on tellurite and phosphate formers have been measured from 6 – 1500 cm-1 using an excitation wavelength of 514 nm. The Tellurite glasses exhibit Raman Spectra at least 10 times more intense, are more spectrally uniform and possess spectral bandwidths more than a factor of two wider than fused silica. Assignments of the vibrational bands are presented and the compositional dependence of the spectra is discussed with respect to the molecular structure. Significantly high Boson peaks were found in the frequency range from 30-100 cm-1. The Raman gain curves were calculated from the polarized spontaneous Raman spectra. In particular, they show broad and flat band in the low frequency region (50-400 cm-1) suggesting that these glasses may be useful for Raman gain applications extending to very low frequencies. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra of the niobium-phosphate glasses display a pronounced low-frequency enhancement of the vibrational density of states. By averaging over the full accessible wavevector range we obtain an approximate spectral distribution of the vibrational modes. Through direct comparison with the Raman spectra we determine the Raman coupling function which shows a linear behavior near the Boson peak maximum. Possible mechanisms contributing to the low frequency Raman band such as disorder-induced irregular vibrational states are discussed.
