Although there are discussions and struggles about the sustainability of this activity in an adverse environment, such as the semi-arid region, producers need alternatives that reduce their environmental impact and at the same time keep alive the centuries-old tradition of raising cattle in this region rich in customs and struggles, but surrounded by challenges and limitations. Therefore, the objective of the work is to identify and understand the rationalities that permeate dairy cattle activity in the semi-arid region of Ceará. The theoretical studies on the social actions and types of rationalities base the reference for the development of the research. Taking as presupposition the identification of the rationalities that permeate the activity, the present work is deepened in the types of rationalities perceptible in milk producers, being them economic or substantive rationality. Understanding the structure of properties and the profile of milk producers is a complementary objective. It is a basic qualitative research that was developed through the application of interviews with local informants, supported by the quantitative approach developed through a questionnaire. The findings of the survey indicated the existence of milk producers based both on substantive rationality and producers based on economic rationality, and what prevails is substantive rationality, insofar as producers remain tied to traditions and cultures. Water shortage. / A bovinocultura leiteira é uma atividade arraigada à cultura sertaneja e ainda permanece economicamente forte no semiárido cearense. Embora existam discussões e embates sobre a sustentabilidade dessa atividade em um ambiente adverso, como o semiárido, os produtores precisam de alternativas que reduzam o impacto ambiental e, ao mesmo tempo, mantenham viva a tradição secular de criar gado nessa região, rica em costumes e lutas, mas cercada de desafios e limitações. Diante disso, o objetivo do trabalho é tanto identificar quanto entender quais são as racionalidades que permeiam a atividade de bovinocultura de leite no semiárido cearense. Os estudos teóricos sobre as ações sociais e os tipos de racionalidades fundamentam o referencial para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa. Tomando como pressuposto a identificação das racionalidades que permeiam a atividade, o presente trabalho se aprofunda nos tipos de racionalidades perceptíveis nos produtores de leite, sejam elas a racionalidade econômica ou a substantiva. A compreensão da estrutura das propriedades e do perfil dos produtores de leite é objetivo complementar. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa básica que se desenvolveu por meio da aplicação de entrevistas com informantes locais, apoiada na abordagem quantitativa desenvolvida por meio de questionário. Os achados da pesquisa indicaram a existência de produtores de leite baseados tanto na racionalidade substantiva quanto produtores baseados na racionalidade econômica, e o que predomina é a racionalidade substantiva, na medida em que os produtores continuam ligados às tradições e culturas.
