You can't! : the daily exercise of police authority in Rio de Janeiro, 1907-1930Bretas, Marcos Luiz January 1995 (has links)
The police of Rio de Janeiro had an important role in the reform of the city in the early twentieth century. The impetus to build a modem city influenced elite intellectuals to try to reform the police in the modem, scientific fashion. After the first wave of reforms receded, the police was abandoned to a less prominent role, and left without resources to carryon the modernising process, resulting in the need to develop their own methods of work derived from their daily experience. The main purpose of this thesis is to look closely at daily police activity, trying to show how policemen developed their ways of viewing the world and their procedures from the experiences they faced. From their contacts with state administrators, in the figure of the Chief of Police, with members of the elite. and with the vast majority of poor citizens, policemen began to define the extent and limits of their power, building their place in the networks of patronage and authority that permeated Rio's society. They had to combine an unchecked power to deal with those they classified as the criminal classes, composed of the dispossessed, and an attitude of subservience to the powerful, in a pattern that characterises twentieth-century policing in Rio de Janeiro.

This thesis is based on a study conducted in the Serra do Calcário(Limestone Mountain Range), located in the county of Cocalinho in the state of Mato Grosso; it was designed to provide a description of the geomorphology of the karst features observed and propose a model to explain its development, in an attempt to promote the understanding of the karst features found in the central-western part of Brazil. The theoretical background orienting the research was a systemic approach, specifically that of an open system of a process-response type. In the process-response open system approach adopted, the work of Scheidegger suggests that such features can be understood as part of a dynamic system based on the interrelationship of 5 principles: Antagonism, Instability, Catena, Selection and Structural Control. Based on this theoretical foundation, as well as work in the field and laboratory interpretation of satellite and radar images, it was possible to identify two zones and 5 geomorphologic features, as well as proposing a developmental sequence for the surface features of the area in question.

Geochemical and molecular studies of the depositional environments of source rocks and their derived oils from the Brazilian marginal basinsMello, Marcio Rocha January 1988 (has links)
A geochemical survey of Brazilian marginal basins using a wide selection of source rocks and oils, ranging from Lower Cretaceous to Tertiary in age, has been undertaken. The aims were to assess the palaeoenvironment of deposition of the source rocks, to correlate reservoired oils with their putative source rocks and to understand the effects of maturity on the composition and absolute concentrations of biological markers. The geochemical analyses included evaluation of organic ca~bon contents, Rock-Eval pyrolysis data, vitrinite reflectance measurements, determination of carbon isotope ratios, elemental and visual kerogen analysis, and molecular studies involving liquid and gas chromatography, qualitative and quantitative biological marker investigations using GC-MS, metastable GC-MS .and GC-MS/MS for saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, and UV/vis spectrophotometry, probe MS and HPLC for metalloporphyrins. The metastable ion GC-MS data were evaluated using principal component analysis. Integration of the results with geological and paleontological data provides the recognition and differentiation of seven depositional regimes, namely lacustrine freshwater, lacustrine saline water, marine evaporitic, marine carbonate, marine deltaic with carbonate influence, open marine highly anoxic with a predominance of calcareous mUdstone lithology, and open marine anoxic, with predominance of siliciclastic lithology. The analyses of the oils reveal significant differences between groups which enable a correlation with putative source rocks laid down in five of the above depositional regimes: lacustrine freshwater; lacustrine saline water; marine evaporitic: marine carbonate and marine deltaic with carbonate influence. The quantitative approach used to determine the effect of thermal maturity on the composition and concentration of the biological markers shows that care must be taken in their use as maturity indicators, since source input and mineral matrix might play an important role. On the other hand, it also shows that the concentrations decrease considerably between the onset of petroleum generation and its peak. Thus, care must also be exercised when using biological marker concentration in palaeoenvironmental assessment The metalloporphyrins in a selection of organic rich sediments have also been examined. The results suggest that their distributions can be a useful auxiliary tool in the characterisation of depositional environments of petroleum source rocks. Finally, a combined geochemical and micropalaeontological study of Cenomanian to Maastrichtian pelitic sediments from the continental margin extends the occurrence of the recognised Cenomanian-Turonian and santonian "oceanic anoxic events". As an extension, the presence of such events in the Coniacian is reported. In contrast, the Campanian-Maastrichtian appears to be a time interval when deposition under oxygenated conditions produced sediments with low organic carbon contents and poor hydrocarbon source potential. In summary, biological marker characteristics of organicrich sediments can distinguish different types of depositional environments, assessment of from analysis allow oil-source rock correlations, and the the depositional environment of the source rocks only of the oils. Thus, this thesis provides a framework of biological marker characteristics which can be compared with samples from other parts of the world.

O setor supermercadista no Brasil nos anos 1990. / The supermarket sector in Brazil in the years 1990.Umberto Antonio Sesso Filho 19 May 2003 (has links)
The Supermarket sector in Brazil went through deep transformations in the decade of 1990, such as: a) the process of consolidation of the largest companies; b) commercial automation; and c) use of electronic transfer of information. The objective of the study is to analyze the impact of the modifications occurred in this sector on the economy, using the input-output theory. To do so, the new Supermarkets sector were extracted from the Trade sector of the input-output matrix of Brazil for the years 1990, 1995 and 1999 and the economic indicators referring to the employment, income, production, taxes, and inter-sector linkages were calculated for all the sectors of the economy. For the years 1995 and 1999 a new methodology was also applied for sectorial analysis of the supermarket sector, which consists of incorporating the values, at basic prices, of the goods traded as operational costs in the Supermarket sector. Besides, the sectorial gross domestic product (GDP) of the new Supermarket sector was estimated for the years indicated previously. The main conclusions of the research are that the Supermarket sector is an important one in generating employment, income, production and sales taxes (ICMS) for the period 1990-1999. The GDP of the Supermarket complex is of approximately 5% of the national GDP. For the year of 1999, values obtained using the new methodology show that the supermarkets were capable to generate, for a variation of R$ 1 million of the final demand: a) 154 new jobs; b) R$ 400 thousand in wages; and c) R$ 110 thousand in taxes (ICMS). The largest impact of the variation of the supermarkets production in terms of employment generating, income and production occurs on the following sectors: a) Agricultural; b) Other Food Products; c) Processing of Vegetable Products; d) Dairy Industry; e) Trade; f) Services Rendered to Families; and g) Rents. The impact on the Agricultural and Food industry happens mainly by indirect effect and on the sectors of services by induced effect. Other industries started to indicate a larger influence of the sales of the supermarkets on its production, employment and income, mainly in Plastic Goods, Clothing and Services Rendered to the Companies. This indicates: a) the diversification of the products marketed by the supermarkets, mainly non-food items, related with the opening of hypermarkets; and b) larger expenses with marketing and other services rendered to the companies.
