January 2005 (has links)
Through a qualitative approach, it was analyzed the reasons and aspects that involve the decision-making process that leads women to breastfed their babies, being described the wet nurses speeches based on the categorical modality of content analysis. Of the children surveyed, 75% were breastfed. The prevalence of exclusive and total breastfeeding, at the end of 6 and 12 months, was 22.2% and 65%, respectively. The variables associated to weaning were the use of bottle (?2=35.843; p<0.0001, for exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months; ?2=9.537; p=0.002, for breastfeeding up to 12 months) and of pacifier (?2=14.667; p=0.0001).
