Toward Local Brownfield Regeneration: Factors Affecting People's Attitude and Preference of Brownfield Landscape

Kim, Eujin Julia 27 April 2015 (has links)
Planning and design of brownfield landscapes are not straight forward due to invisible, potential contamination. The dilemma occurs to designers in dealing with brownfield landscapes, because they are unknowingly able to deliver deceptive information regarding the site safety. If the designers and planners are given the information about factors affecting people's reaction to different characteristics of brownfield landscapes, this would help them to be better prepared for ethical issues. For this study, visual preference survey for neighborhoods along the rail yard in the City of Roanoke was conducted. A dimensional analysis found six brownfield landscape types. First of all, historical landmark and maintained landscape types received the highest ratings regardless of the participants characteristics and backgrounds. These types may be viewed less critically and are thus likely to mask potential harms. Second, scruffy vegetation and modest rundown building types that made up the second preferred group revealed more ambivalent feeling. People were highly flexible in switching between change or preservation options in their thinking, thus it would be easy to lead people to focus on certain aspects according to the designer's purposes. Lastly, the two industrial remnant types were the least preferred group. Participants tend to associate these types with toxic pollutants that are likely to adversely affect the health, thus, it would be important to reassure people regarding safety concerns. The expert interviews with brownfield program managers of many localities (Roanoke, VA; Portland, OR; Toledo, OH; Pheonix, AZ; Lewisville, TX; Arlington, TX; and New Bern, NC) were conducted to determine whether the current approaches are effective and develop recommendations. The interviews found that the effectiveness of program is greatly challenged by normative site assessment required by federal government. While the procedure provides necessary information about site safety, it also attaches a stigma to sites regardless of actual contamination level. Based on the findings, it is recommended to include assessment criteria that reveals reuse potentials of brownfields for balanced approach. The results provide useful information for program managers, planners and designers regarding important factors that should be considered for site prioritization and preparation and presentation of designs for brownfield reuse. / Ph. Determining the distribution and fate of mercury in sediments of the Cataraqui River at Kingston, Ontario

Manion, Nathan 02 November 2007 (has links)
The Cataraqui River, which drains 930 square km of watershed before emptying into the inner harbour of Kingston, Ontario (pop: 113,000), has a long history of anthropogenic use. More than 40 industries have existed within the inner harbour over the last century, and while many of these industries are no longer present, the properties that they operated on remain to the present day as potential sources of persistent contamination. This study examined total mercury (THg) concentrations in depth profiles of 21 sediment cores within the inner harbour. THg in pore waters was measured in some selected cores along with methylmercury (MeHg), and total organic carbon measured as % Organic Matter (OM). Results show that the spatial distribution of THg in the surface sediment is not homogenous; concentrations in surface sediment along the southwestern shoreline, adjacent to the former industrial properties, are significantly greater than the rest of the inner harbour, and above the severe effect limit (2000 μg/kg) guideline for sediment. MeHg was detected in some sediment cores, and was found to have a significant, positive correlation with [THg] in surface sediment. THg in pore water was below detection limits in most cores, indicating possible strong associations with sediments, however OM only showed significant, positive correlations with THg in one core sampled. To determine the sources of Hg to sediments, soils, runoff and storm sewer discharges near high concentration sediments were measured for THg. Hg was not detected in storm sewers, but was detected in terrestrial soil near the Kingston Rowing Club at a concentration of more than 4000 μg/kg. Significant [THg] was detected in runoff draining shoreline soils, indicating that erosion from terrestrial sources may be an ongoing source of Hg to sediment. Since [THg] was correlated to the [MeHg] in surface sediment, reducing the amount of Hg entering the river from terrestrial sources may reduce the amount of bioavailable Hg in sediments of the inner harbour. / Thesis (Master, Biology) -- Queen's University, 2007-11-01 19:12:24.364

Řešení revitalizace brownfields v České republice a ve Francii / Revitalization of brownfields in the Czech Republic and in France

NOVÁKOVÁ, Blanka January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis is about the revitalisation of a degraded, abandoned buildings which are called brownfields. The main objective is a comparison between different approaches to the solution of these areas in the Czech Republic and France. There are two case studies. One of them is a regeneration of a former textile factory in the Nord Pas de Calais region and the second one is a current textile factory in Strakonice. The thesis also contains propositions about new usage. France has more developed ideas because it has more experiences in brownfield transformations, since the seventieth years of the twentieth century. Effective instruments are public organization of land (EPF). The collaboration of the public and private sector is also useful, the completion of the legislative tools of strategic planning and indirect tax tools. The most used instrument for the regeneration of brownfields in France is ZAC. The function of this instrument is based on the preparation of the land for a new development. The Czech Republic is being concerned about this topic since the year 1989 and more intensively in 2000. A lot of brownfields are sorted out, but many of them are still there. The biggest barrier of the revitalisation of brownfields are unresolved property rights. There is a financial aid from the fonds of the Europe Union. The Czech Republic also needs a big support from the public sector.

Brownfields a jejich potenciál pro zahradně architektonickou tvorbu

Konopíková, Kristýna January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis has three parts: theoretical, analytical and design part. Theoretical part in the literature research summarizes the basic problems of it. - the question of brownfields targetted on conversion of buildings, exhibition designed together with the Landscape Architecture and finally slew vegetation in buildings brownfields. This theoretical part is the basis for understanding the formation of exhibition space from brownfield buildings. On the chosen examples which were realised in the foreign reconstructions is documented the exhibition design approach and highlights global trends in garden and landscape design, that are beneficial and inspiring for future conversion of brownfield facilities. The practical part deals with picking up a brownfield and his description in Liberec and subsequently in the Catherine´s Valley. There was a research in the city for sites that are registered as brownfields and from these areas were divided further according to the location in the city, on brownfield buildings in the central part of the city and objects of brownfields in the suburban zone. From these objects was finally selected a suitable territory for processing the ideal design. Design part consists of garden architectural study of the selected territory of the former Salomon factories in the Catherine Valley, which summarizes the principles of creation of application model with all its compositions and tries to point out one of the many possibilities of conversion of space. The study is addressed at several levels, and its details are developed to the level of project documentation for construction implementation vegetation elements.
