Cyberbullying and Suicide among a Sample of LGBTQ Young Adults

Schwickrath, Heather 17 July 2012 (has links)
After an extensive literature review, results indicated research has been conducted examining the links between traditional bullying and suicide, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning (LGBTQ) identification and cyberbullying, as well as LGBTQ identification and suicide. However, it appears as though there is a dearth of studies examining the link between young adults identifying as LGBTQ who have experienced cyberbullying and the subsequent suicidal behaviors. The following research study attempts to answer the question of whether cyberbullying mediates the relationship between cyberbullying and suicidal behaviors. / School of Education / School Psychology / PhD / Dissertation

iBully: the impact of gender of bully and victim on perception of cyberbullying and its consequences

Sharpe, Christopher 01 May 2011 (has links)
In today's technologically sophisticated world, people have many electronic methods of exchanging information and communicating. Unfortunately, these methods are not always used in positive ways; they can also be used to convey aggression and bullying. Recently, such acts of aggression have been labeled many things from cyberbullying to online social cruelty, and have received much media attention due to their tragic consequences including victim suicide. This study explores the impact of victim and bully gender in relation to perception of bully likability, punishment, impact on victim, and victim responses. Participants reviewed a Cyberbullying scenario in which the gender of the victim and perpetrator were manipulated. All scenarios were identical except for the gender pairs of the victim and perpetrator: Male (bully)-Male (victim), Male (bully)-Female (victim), Female (bully)-Female (victim), and Female (bully)-Male (victim). Participants then completed the Likability of Bully, Punishment for Bully, Impact on Victim, and Victim Response scales. A main effect of gender on the Punishment Scale for the gender of bully indicated that participants desired lighter punishment for females independent of the gender of the victim. The results of this study suggest that increasing awareness of the seriousness of all cyberbullying regardless of gender of bully is important.

Cyber bullying : an evaluation of Florida's recent enactment

Williams, Alyssa 01 January 2010 (has links)
The goal of this paper is to examine the efficiency of the cyber bullying provisions of Florida's Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up For All Students Act in deterring cyber bullying behavior. The study includes several subordinate goals to answer this question. The first is measuring the awareness of students about this law (whose behavior is the focus of the law), measuring the awareness of teachers and school officials of this law (who are to enforce this law), and measuring the awareness of legal professionals about the law (who will pursue the law in court). The study also seeks to determine the perceptions of cyber bullying and the laws governing the behavior in each of these groups. The research includes a study of neutralization of cyber bullying behavior and deterrence of the law. To do this, the study uses a mixed method approach to collect quantitative, qualitative, and legal data to answer these questions. Current research studies, survey data, and interviews are utilized in conjunction with an investigation of legislation and case law. Florida's statute is compared to three other anti-bullying state statutes (Arizona, Missouri, and Vermont) created to combat bullying and cyber bullying within their states. Case law is examined on a national basis to determine trends in cyber bullying litigation. Following analysis of the data, conclusions are drawn on the efficiency of the law and suggestions are made to improve the law's performance. Suggestions for future research are also made.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2433204 bytes, checksum: 511306bb83e4eca6c00e45f9e55ca9d0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-08-24 / The present study, From bullying to cyberbullying: history and memories (1993-2011), (Do bullying ao cyberbullying: história e memórias escolares), is a proposal of investigation that contemplates the history of school events in the present time. In this context, the study recreates facts and events of our time and representations of lived and imagined moments as a manner of building history. The investigation uses Oral History methodology, utilizing living participants‟ memories, and potential deponents, open to collaboration. The study presents three main goals. It aims to revel the construction process of the object of study; to show the dialogues among the studies of Halbwachs (2006), Ricoeur (2012), Bosi (1994), Le Goff (2013), Thompson (1992), Meihy (2007), and others; about history, memory, present time and oral history; and to show the articulation among Olweus (1993), Silva (2010), Lima (2011), Calhau (2011), Fante (2012), etc.; that see bullying and cyberbullying as anactual “problematic” poorly studied. Because of the constant changes in history throughout the time, future generations will be able to “dive” in memories of the past, preserving them alive and building connections for its comprehension and reconstruction.
