Though Kenneth Burke has often been dismissed as a brilliant but idiosyncratic
thinker, this dissertation will argue that he is actually a precocious systems theorist.
The systemic and systematic aspects of Burke’s work will be demonstrated by
comparing it to the General Systems Theory (GST) of biologist Ludwig von
Bertalanffy. Though beginning from very different starting points, Bertalanffy and
Burke develop similar aims, methods, and come to remarkably similar conclusions
about the nature and function of language.
The systemic nature of Burke’s language philosophy will also become evident
through an analysis of the Burkean corpus. Burke’s first book contains several
breakthrough ideas that set him irrevocably upon the path of a systemic theory of
symbolic action. Burke’s next book, influenced by GST-inspired biology, seeks to
understand the nature of associative networks by employing an organic metaphor.
Burke’s interest in systems comes from his desire to repair the cultural system
crumbling around him as a result of the Depression. Consequently his next book,
Attitudes Toward History, studies what happens to such “orientations” (i.e., the
systems by which humans classify and evaluate the world) during epistemological
crises. The Philosophy of Literary Form is concerned primarily with the function of
these orientations.
In A Grammar of Motives Burke seeks to understand the basis for transformation of these evaluative systems, and in A Rhetoric of Motives he demonstrates
how these transformations are used to persuade. Burke next turns his attention to
understanding a small part of the system, a theological doctrine, in The Rhetoric of
Religion.
Burke’s theory appears plausible when compared to and supplemented by GST
and the related self-organizing system theory. Furthermore, a paradigm shift to non-mechanistic
cognitive theory allows us to refine and extend Burke’s intuitive theory of
symbolic action. The final chapter will argue that symbolic action is the manipulation
of the quality space, which is a
multi-dimensional model for the super-system
composed of mental, linguistic and cultural sub-systems. In mental systems, skeletal
information structures called schemas combine to form simple models, which in turn
combine to form a model of the world. Similarly, a culture can be seen as a system
of schemas held in common by the group. The linguistic system labels, transmits and
thus evokes these schemas. The primary means by which the quality space becomes
reconfigured is through metaphor, which creates new schemas, and modifies the
connections between schemas (and thus the position and relative value of a schema).
Metaphor, therefore, is the basis of symbolic action.
This systemic theory of symbolic action may be modeled by Connectionist
networks. These analogical neural networks provide a model for how brains form
and associate categories and support Burke’s assertion that thought is primarily
analogical and categorical, thus affording the means for refining Burke’s theory of
symbolic action. Ultimately, such a theory may provide a unified field theory for

A Burkeian Analysis of the Rhetoric of Rebirth in Selected Television CommercialsThetford, Tony R. 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of selected television commercials according to Kenneth Burke's theory of the rhetoric of rebirth. A supplementary Burkeian method called cluster analysis was also used. The analysis revealed, that the rhetoric of rebirth was incorporated in the commercials to stimulate guilt in the television audience. The products offered in the commercials supposedly purged this guilt, transforming the person to a new way of life. The analysis revealed meanings inherent in the word choices for various commercials as well as the potential impact of those words. The study isolated several underlying motifs in the substance of the commercials. The effect of the visual message may cause the audience to overlook the message of the words. Experimental research cited in this study confirms this hypothesis.

This dissertation provides an exploration of the nature and scope of the category of the Unconscious as a necessary feature of rhetorical theory and criticism. In order to demonstrate the fundamental importance of the Unconscious to rhetorical theory and criticism, this dissertation focuses on Kenneth Burke's rhetorical theory of Dramatism. Burke is one of the most frequently cited theorists by rhetorical scholars, and offers a familiar site for rhetorical scholars to understand the Unconscious as a rhetorical factor. Burke formulated a theory of the Unconscious by drawing from Freudian psychoanalysis. Since Freud, Jacques Lacan has advanced and altered the Freudian understanding of the Unconscious. Therefore, by navigating the terrain of both Burkeian and Lacanian scholarship, this dissertation moves toward a BurkeLacanian theory and method to offer a more critical lexicon for the rhetorical study of the dialectical relationship between the conscious and Unconscious parts of the psyche. In doing so, this dissertation develops and answers the following questions: How can we theorize the Unconscious as a rhetorical factor? How is Burke's theory of the Unconscious rhetorically useful? How might we understand Burke's theory of rhetoric differently and better if we read his Freudian influences through Lacanian scholarship on the Unconscious? How is a theory of the BurkeLacanian subject rhetorically useful? How does a BurkeLacanian theory of the Unconscious inform productive criticism? This dissertation applies a BurkeLacanian theory of the Unconscious by introducing a rhetorical method called "Ideographic Cluster Quilting." This method moves toward the rhetorical study of texts as cultural psyches that are constructed from fragments of discourse that form around figures of abjection. In order to demonstrate the usefulness for studying Ideographic Cluster Quilts, this dissertation analyzes the cultural psyche that forms around the figure of the "illegal immigrant" as abject. In doing so, we gain an insight into the Unconscious hatred of humanity as the perverse core of American identity that qualifies which bodies do and do not matter. We will also gain an insight into the way nationalistic identities function within globalization by confining labor forces within national boundaries, while multinational corporations move freely around the world. / text

Laying Claim to the Home: Homesteads and National Domesticity in Antebellum AmericaWyckoff, Robert Thomas 03 October 2013 (has links)
his dissertation examines the rhetoric of the homestead movement in antebellum America as a particular instance of domesticity. Homestead rhetoric alters the modes of identity and subjectivity usually found in domesticity, and alters the home-nation metaphor at the moment when the nation faced an increasing sectional divide that would lead to a Civil War. As deployed by Congressmen, homestead rhetoric used domesticity to define the relationship between manhood and citizenship. Harriet Jacobs uses this rhetoric in her autobiographical Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl to shape an identity more in line with male homesteaders than with the subjects of women’s domesticity. E.D.E.N. Southworth’s The Haunted Homestead offers the home-nation metaphor as a solution to national crisis, but ultimately the crisis is too large to solve through domesticity.
This dissertation uses Jurgen Habermas’s concepts of lifeworld and system to assess the types of subjects created through the different modes of domesticity. Lifeworld describes modes of communication that foster the agency of individuals, and system describes the instrumentalization of individuals into roles where they are only a means to an end. The lifeworld created through homestead rhetoric is ultimately systematized by the importance of transforming land into property; Harriet Jacobs recognizes that she must escape the systematization of slavery and enter into a new economic system to have her rights fully acknowledged; Southworth’s failure to find a literary solution to national problems suggests the limits of a literary lifeworld, or the extent to which the domestic itself has been systematized. This dissertation concludes by considering how Laura Ingalls Wilder’s experience homesteading in South Dakota can bring an ecocritical perspective to lifeworld and system. Ingalls Wilder rejects the system of commodified nature to find contentment in a lifeworld affirmed through an agrarian relationship to the land.

A dancing of attitudes : Burke’s rhetoric on ShakespeareRowan, Stephen Charles January 1985 (has links)
Since F.S. Boas coined the term in 1896, All's Well That Ends Well, Troilus and Cressida, and Measure For Measure have been generally accepted as "problem plays," and many critics have offered biographical, thematic, and formal explanations of why these plays are so "dark."
In this thesis, I accept that these plays are "problems" and I propose a rhetorical explanation for dissatisfaction with them, especially with their endings. Drawing on Kenneth Burke's philosophy of literary form and his anthropology of man as the symbol-using animal, I show that in these plays Shakespeare frustrates the expectations of an audience for a definite ending through death or marriage which would define the "terms" characterized in each play; secondly, he provides no scapegoat whose victimage would allow the audience to recognize an order clearly proposed for its acceptance; finally, he supplies no symbol of order which credibly demonstrates its power to establish a renewed society.
As rhetoric, these plays show an intense "dancing of attitudes" toward symbols of order and toward conventional forms which would provide a clear sense of an ending. As such, they show what Burke calls "self-interference" on the part of the playwright — a deliberate balancing of arguments for the sake of "quizzicality" toward language as symbolic action.
According to this analysis, the problem plays remain problems for an audience which seeks identification with symbols of order; they are, however, a tribute to the agile mind of a master rhetorician. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate
