Family Business Conflicts : Impact on Family Climate, Psychological Stress and Business Performance

Margaret, Meenu Mary January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Family businesses are an important institution in any economy, as they contribute to the economic development of the nation, provide employment and support the needs of the society. Unresolved conflicts in a family business can hamper the economic growth, bring distress to the family and the people employed in the family business. Studies on conflicts have been a fascinating area for researchers.Studies on conflict range from intrapersonal to interpersonal, among nations, among trade unions and even among different interest groups. What is more alluring is to study conflicts in a family business, for they exhibit a uniqueinteraction among blood relations working together in a commercialenterprise. In the Indian context, understanding of conflicts is minimalas they are either ignored or suppressed. Its prominence is seen only atthe last phase when conflicts are manifested openly leading to disruption. There is a need to study conflicts in initial and middle phases in order to avert suchhuge losses. In this study the main methods included were chronological development of conflicts through case studies and cross sectional survey of 90 family businesses. System’s theory was used to study the nature of conflicts in family business. The family and business features were included in the study to provide a better understanding of conflict in family businesses. Studies have identified different conflicts like succession conflict, relationship conflict, work-family conflict and others. These studies have focused on uni dimensional or two dimensional perspective of conflicts. Conflicts do not occur in isolation and thus there was a need for a multi-dimensional perspective on conflicts in family business. This would in turn ensure better conflict management and resolution techniques. The multi-dimensional model included individual, familyand business characteristics to study their influence on different conflicts in family business. The model also examined how conflicts impact the individual, family and business at different levels. Thus variableslike family climate, psychological stress and business performance were included. There were six major conflicts relevant to family business that were identified and studied. They were, succession management and planning conflict, relationship conflict, process conflict, role conflict and work family conflict. To capture the different conflicts, the Family Business Issues (FBI) scale was developed. It was found that family business owners experienced different types of conflicts in varying degrees. The majorcontributions of the study are the development and standardization of ameasure called Family Business Issues Scale. This is useful to identify the areas that require attention with respect to conflict management for family businesses. It canbe used as a screening tool by consultants and practitioners working with family businesses. Family Business Performance questionnaire was constructed to capture the perceived business performance of the family businesses. Perceived Stress Scale, a standardized measure was used to capture the psychological stress among family business owners. These measures were used to capture the variables under study. Regression models werebuilt to test the hypothesis. Results of the survey were compared with descriptive longitudinal case studies. Triangulation of data from the empirical study from90 family business respondents and 4 case studies led to better understanding of nature and growth of conflicts. The results suggest that conflicts in family business occur in varying degrees, they work in a combination with family, business and individual characteristics. The sector of business, family type, type of business and generation do play significant roles in combination with conflicts to impact the family and business. The study highlights the strong influence the family systemsand business systems have on each other. The findings of the study can be a guide to researchers, theorists and consultants. The thesis proceeds in the following order, chapter one provides introduction to the concepts referred to in the study. Chapter two provides review of literature on conflicts in family business, types of conflicts, its impact on the individual, family and business. Chapter three explains the objectives, conceptual model, methodology, sample description, hypothesis developed for the study. Chapter four provides details about conflicts in family business and its antecedents and discusses ANOVA and Tukey’s results for the variables under study. It also provides information about questionnaire development and factor analysis results. Chapter five explains the regression models built to test the impact of family business conflicts on psychological stress, family climate and business performance.Chapter six provides details of the in depth case studies of four family business owners, themes that emerged, triangulation of results using the survey and case studies. Chapter seven deals with conclusions, suggestions, limitations and scope for future study. Implications of this study for research and practice are also discussed.

Aplikace Pollakovy metody Hodnocení vitality podniků v českých podmínkách / Application of Method Vitality of Company Evaluation Designed by Pollak in the Czech Conditions

Spálovský, Mojmír January 2010 (has links)
The paper deals with the verification of method Vitality of company evaluation, designed by Harry Pollak. The aim of this paper was to verify based on case studies the accuracy of how the method works and modify it for use in the Czech conditions. Qualitative research in the form of a guided interview was due to the effectiveness of the method verification focused on the 22 companies that have gone through crisis management. Research has shown that the method is fully functional and correctly diagnoses the health of the company, regardless of size, industry, history or location. Through revision of the method in the form of adjustment weights, changes and additions of the characteristics and their parameters was developed a new method of Vitality of company evaluation, which better reflects the conditions of Czech companies, emphasis the importance of key business elements and easier evaluates extreme situations of the company. This diagnostic method is generally applicable, simple, quickly and easily interpretable and applicable, which responds to the imperfection of previous methods. Factors Affecting Business-to-Business Electronic Commerce Success: An Empirical Investigation

Chen, Chun-I Philip 01 January 2010 (has links)
It is generally believed that Business to Business (B2B) e-commerce has a great impact on business performance improvement. Considerable research also shows that another dependent variable, B2B e-commerce success, can be a good overall measure of B2B systems. This paper investigated and examined the impact of several factors, which are either internal or external to the firm on B2B performance improvement and B2B e-commerce success. It is suggested that the various factors affect B2B success through business performance improvement. A research model was developed to test and evaluate these factors. A survey instrument was developed to examine the relationships between these factors and business performance. Survey data was collected online from 143 companies in the U.S.A. and Taiwan where their B2B e-commerce systems were operational for more than 1 year. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique was used to assess the measurement and the structural model. Analyses and results of the pooled survey data suggest that the following factors are significant in the B2B e-commerce environments: (a) alignment of business and e-commerce strategy has a positive impact on business performance, (b) strong relationships between the trading partners have a positive influence on business performance, and (c) B2B e-commerce success is significantly influenced by business performance improvements. Thus, firms that seek to implement successful B2B systems should focus on business performance improvements.

Identifying a leverage point to improve business performance through eLearning : a case study in a financial institution

Korpel, Isabeau Richard 02 March 2005 (has links)
In an ever-changing world of work Absa, as a business, is faced with various challenges including the continuous development of skills. Due to technological advancements, eLearning can provide a mechanism to rapidly build the required strategic and tactical skills that the organisation needs. This study explored the challenge of articulating the contribution of eLearning to business performance in an unbounded way. The study focused on the creation of knowledge about how the contribution of eLearning to business performance can be improved. In the process of knowledge creation, the study focused on identifying the point of value creation between Business and an eLearning intervention. This point of value creation can be seen as a leverage point. Systems Thinking was implemented as an approach in order to identify the leverage point. The following research objectives were defined: · To identify the driver problem that prevents eLearning from improving business performance. · To design the systems dynamic model that represents the driver problem. · To identify the leverage point within the systems dynamic model. · To reflect on the effect that the behaviour of the individuals, participating in the research process, has on the research inquiry. The sample of 28 focus group participants was selected from two specific divisions of Absa – the eChannels: Contact Centre and the Learning and Development Department. This sample consisted of Operational Management, Team Leaders, Contact Centre Consultants and learning design experts. Executive Management was excluded from the focus groups, but was included in the process as verifiers. This created an opportunity for Executive Management to voice their opinions. The results of the study indicate that the leverage point for successful contribution of eLearning to business performance is … A shared mental model of expectations between the participating stakeholders. Once Business and the Learning and Development Department start going through the constructive cycle of the systems dynamic model repeatedly, they will continuously build the shared mental model of expectations. This cycle will also build on the: 1) Level of visible support of the line managers; 2) Level of clarity of business needs to all relevant stakeholders; 3) Number of requests from business for eLearning opportunities; and 4) Level of awareness and understanding of appropriate eLearning interventions per target population. The effect of the positive reinforcement of the recurring cycle will ensure that eLearning continuously contributes to business performance. During the study the effect of the research process on the focus group participants as well as the effect of the focus group participants on the research process was also accounted for. Observers reflected on the behaviour of the focus group participants and found that their opinions and thought processes influenced the outcome of the study. The focus group participants felt that they had learnt something new, that the tasks set to the groups was clear and that the topics they had learnt most about were ‘systems thinking’ followed by the ’ relationship between eLearning and business performance’.
