Assessment of health students performance by the community using perceived quality of care modelSalazar, Ligia de. January 1996 (has links)
The trend in medical education and in general, among health professionals, is based, on the current changes of health systems aimed to improve relevance equity, and cost effectiveness of health care. With respect to human health resources, there is lack of agreement among the competence level, performance and the needs of both the system using them and the target population. Therefore, it is important and necessary to consider both the community and health services as partners in the task of defining these changes and in the provision of health services to meet the above mentioned criteria. / The main purpose of this partnership is to encourage efforts to promote, oversee, and apply the actions in each one of the instances in order to improve training of human resource, strengthen local health systems, and empower the communities. Human resource competence and performance, the capacity to provide services, and the degree of community participation and commitement to health, are key elements in improving service quality. / The philosophy of current curricula reform at the Valle University stresses the partnership relationship between academic institutions, services centers, and the community, in the training of health professionals. The proposed investigation focuses on the community-based training aspect of student performance assessment and its relation to the health care system and academia. Specifically, the study will focus on designing valid and reliable instruments for community assessment of student performance, using both qualitative and quantitative aspects of data collection and analysis to assess "patient satisfaction" as an indicator of quality of care. / The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed assessment activity will allow the educational and health services institutions to have relevant and dynamic information as feedback for planning and adjustment of their programs. At the same time, it will allow the community to participate in an effective way in aspects related to their health care. The results of this study will be used as a basis for producing guidelines for involving communities (users) in the health care students evaluation process.

Dwellers of memory : an ethnography of place, memory and violence in Medellín, ColombiaRiaño Alcalá, Pilar 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation documents the memories of Medellin's city dwellers and
explores how people in violent urban contexts make sense of violence and deal with its
presence in their lives. This study is defined as an anthropology of remembering; it is an
ethnographic observation of the practices of remembering and forgetting and how these
practices shape and are shaped by the lived experience of violence. The dissertation is
built on extensive fieldwork in the Colombian city of Medellin with a cross section of
women, youth and community leaders.
The thesis argues that when the uncertainty and paradox created by widespread
forms of violence threaten to destroy the social and material worlds of Colombian city
dwellers, memory becomes a strategic tool for human and cultural survival. The creation
of an oral history of death and the dead, the presence of a local social knowledge that
assists city dwellers in their safe circulation in and through the city, and the maintenance
of practices of place making are examples of how city dwellers deal with the devastating
effects of violence in their lives. The thesis develops a place-based exploration of
memory and violence and approaches place as a physical, sensory, social and imaginative
experience that maintains a sense of continuity between the past and the every day life of
Medellin's city dwellers. The two connecting concepts that ground the analysis of the
relationship between people, memory and violence are those of "sense of place" and
"communities of memory."
The dimensions of human agency, cultural survival and human suffering are
central to the exploration of memory, place and violence developed in this thesis. From
this perspective, the thesis takes to task anthropological works on violence that
emphasize the routinization of terror and fear for those who live amidst widespread
violence. The thesis discusses the multiple ways in which memory is disputed in
Colombia and the risks posed by a local reading of violence as intrinsic to the history of
the country. It concludes that when individuals are faced with realities such as life and
death, the familiar faces of the actors of violence and the weakening of the social and
ethical fabric of their communities, they do not stand in definite positions and cannot be
defined in simple terms such as victims and perpetrators. Thus, it can be recognized that
although violence plays a central role in the Medellin city dwellers processes of identity
formation, it does not exhaust these possibilities.

Park Cerro de las Tres CrucesMagan, Jose Luis January 1993 (has links)
The high cost of land generates an inner growth in the cities in South America. In Cali, Colombia this growth has created a dense landscape with few open areas appropriated for the outdoor recreation of Cali's inhabitants.Calehos prefer to develop projects on flat surfaces. However, every day more residential projects are being developed in the foot of the hills that surround Cali, leaving the areas undeveloped in the upper part of the mountains.A landscape architect can preserve these green areas for the enjoyment of the Calehos, providing at the same time a solution for the present problems of erosion and landscape destruction. / Department of Landscape Architecture

The Bavaria Brewery : from brewery to museum, retail shops, and restaurant complexCanon, Claudia-Nicole January 1991 (has links)
This thesis project was instigated by the interest to remodel a historic building in downtown Bogota, Colombia, South America. The Bavaria Brewery, the first and oldest beer producer in the country, will be transformed into a retail/recreational facility composed of small-stores, restaurants and a museum. The red-brick structure was designed in 1891 by Alejandro Manrique, to resemble a German brewery. As this brewery grew in popularity, the buildings underwent many alterations and additions. Sufficient changes were made to obscure the building's original design. As it's machinery was updated and more space was needed, the brewery was forced to move to a more industrial area of Bogota city.In 1988 a renewal plan was made for Bavaria Brewery site. New use was proposed for the area including residential and central activities. An urban central park intended to be the focal point of the project.Because the interior was in good shape, the original floor plan remained unaltered with only one new level being built using two-story spaces. The interior was designed for its new function as a shopping center, which has resulted in a place where there is a great variety of activities connected by a system of walkways, corridors, tunnels and two outside elevators. On the exterior all historic elements have been preserved, though all new elements are clearly distinguished from the old but in a manner sympathetic to the industrial character of the Bavaria Brewery. These buildings have been evolutionary in their structure, never static, they have been marked with the imprint of different periods. As a result the design will reflect the present, recall the past, and insinuate the future. / Department of Architecture

Subjective reactions to the Antioqueno dialect in Columbia : a sociolinguistic examination of stigma in a selected speech communityGomez-Jimenez, Luis F. January 1992 (has links)
The subjective reactions of listeners from various backgrounds to speech varieties used in Medellin, Colombia, were investigated using the matched-guise technique with a series of measuring scales. In all three dimensions of a semantic differential scale-namely, competence, personal integrity, and social attractiveness-Non-Antioqueno Dialect (NAD) speakers were rated significantly higher than Antioqueno Dialect (AD) speakers regardless of the sex or the dialect of the subject, or the sex of the speaker. In the case of social attractiveness, however, for female subjects the difference between NAD speakers and AD speakers was somewhat larger than for the male subjects. The evaluations of male speakers were significantly higher than those of female speakers regardless of the sex of the subject, the dialect of the subject, or the dialect of the speaker. For AD subjects the difference in ratings between male and female speakers was about the same for male and female subjects; however, for NAD female subjects this difference was somewhat larger than for the NAD male subjects. In general, the evaluations of speakers by different age groups indicated a significant difference, between older and younger subjects. The younger subjects rated speakers significantly lower. than the older subjects did for all three variables of evaluation, that is, competence, personal integrity and social attractiveness. While no significant effect was found for socio-economic status (SES) non the variables of personal integrity and social attractiveness, SES was found to have a significant effect on evaluations of competence. In this dimension of evaluation, lowermiddle class subjects rated speakers significantly differently from the middle-middle class and the upper-middle class subjects. The former ranked speakers higher on competence than the middle-middle class and the upper-middle class subjects did. Finally, subjects assigned prestigious professions to NAD speakers, while only non-prestigious occupations were matched with the AD speakers. Additionally, the proportion of times male speakers were judged to have a prestigious occupation was significantly higher than the proportion of times female speakers were judged so.Within the theoretical framework of this study, differential reactions to the guises assumed by the speakers were interpreted as revealing differential attitudes towards the speech varieties. The evaluations are taken to be attitudes not only toward the speakers themselves, but also toward the language forms of the varieties involved. / Department of English
