In theoretical terms, this paper intends to analyze the manner in which the urban space appears in the first phase from the Uruguayan writer Juan Carlos Onetti, as well as the elements used in the literary construction of Santa Maria, fictional city created by Onetti, present in his short stories and novel, such as A vida breve. Likewise, in a dialogue between creation and reflection, maps are utilized in order to observe the displacement of the characters in three of the short narratives that encompass this set of creation. / Esta dissertação é composta por onze narrativas de ficção, do gênero conto, conjunto cuja unidade é estabelecida pela atenção à construção dos espaços narrativos nesses textos – no caso, o espaço urbano de cidades como Porto Alegre, Santa Maria, Montevidéu, Buenos Aires e Lisboa. Em termos teóricos, este trabalho busca analisar a forma com que o espaço urbano aparece na primeira fase de escritura do autor uruguaio Juan Carlos Onetti, bem como os elementos utilizados na construção literária de Santa María, cidade ficcional criada por Onetti e que está presente em seus contos e romances, como A vida breve. Da mesma forma, num diálogo entre criação e reflexão, mapas são utilizados para observar o deslocamento dos personagens pela cidade em três dos contos que integram este conjunto.

They look like the same, but they are different. The collection of narratives (short stories) presents in Life in three states: solid, liquid and gaseous is the result of a process that fictionalized ―liquid modernity‖, the idea introduced by polish sociologist Zigmunt Bauman, with all its variants. The characters are shown desperate, abandoned to their own senses and disposable feelings, yearning for security and personal relations. Everything that is revealed is lie, but also could be true. Or would it be opposite? The reader is left to decide. All that involved before, during and after the intellectual-creative effort is in the essay Giving node in drop of water. / Esta dissertação, inserida no âmbito da Escrita Criativa, é composta por duas partes, como dois espelhos frente a frente. Iguais, mas diferentes. O conjunto de narrativas (contos) presentes em A Vida em três estados: sólido, líquido e gasoso, resulta na ficcionalização da teoria da modernidade líquida, termo cunhado pelo sociólogo polonês Zigmunt Bauman, e todas as suas variantes. São personagens desesperados por terem sido abandonados aos seus próprios sentidos e sentimentos descartáveis, ansiando por segurança do convívio, desesperados por relacionar-se. O que os narradores revelam é tudo mentira, mas podia ser verdade. Ou seria o contrário? O leitor que decida.
