INTRODUCTION
Professional jockeys are considered elite sportsmen competing in a sport with certain weight restrictions. Horse racing is categorized as a “weight-making” sport where jockeys can benefit from attaining and/or maintaining a specific weight for competition. The minimum riding weight for professional jockeys and apprentice jockeys who are race riding is currently 52 kg. The lighter the jockey (i.e. the closer he can remain to the minimum weight of 52 kg) the more rides may be allocated to him (and the more money he will earn). This places a great deal of pressure on the jockey to maintain a low body weight, in order to attain rides. Unlike other weight category sports, horse riding does not have an “off season”, therefore jockeys are constantly pressured to maintain a minimal weight. Consequently this may result in unhealthy eating habits, dangerous weight control practices and compromised health. Research on the weight making practices of apprentice jockeys is scarce. In fact, there is currently no published data available on the South African apprentice jockey. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the dietary intake, energy availability and weight control practices of male apprentice jockeys residing at the South African Jockey Academy.
METHODS
Twenty one male flat jockey apprentices of different race groups, between the ages of 16 and 20 years were recruited to take part in this cross sectional observational study. Height, weight and body composition (body fat percentage and fat free mass) were measured. The apprentices completed a 59-item nutrition, health and lifestyle questionnaire including questions on weight control and weight making practices. Dietary intake was recorded with a 24-hour dietary recall on four non-consecutive days including a rest day, two training days, and a race day. On these days, exercise energy expenditure was also recorded with Actiheart© monitors with the aim to calculate energy availability.
MAIN FINDINGS
Total mean reported energy intake of the participants was 7088±2337kJ (35.5±12.5kcal/kg fat free mass [FFM]) and below the recommendations for athletes exercising several hours per day for most days of the week. The micronutrient intakes of the majority of these jockeys were also low (i.e. <67% of recommended intake). Mean calculated energy availability (EA) over two training days and one rest day was 27.1±16.7 kcal/kg FFM and regarded as low (i.e.<30kcal/kg/FFM). Furthermore, the majority of apprentices (88%) had a low EA on the training days. Ninety one percent of the jockeys reported the use of one or more weight control method including food avoidance (81%), restricting food intake and skipping meals
(67%), exercising to sweat (48%) and using the sauna (43%). The top three reported side effects from making weight included thirst (80%), hunger (75%) and tiredness (75%).
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that the majority of South African apprentice jockeys are practicing weight control methods, specifically restricting energy and food intake, to control their weight. This was supported by the mean low dietary energy intake and sub-optimal mean energy availability. Evaluation methods for comparing energy savings due to variable speed pumping in wastewater applicationsSpataru, Adrian January 2014 (has links)
The Master Thesis work has been carried out at Xylem HQ, Sundbyberg, Sweden in collaboration with Linköping University, Department of Management and Engineering. The work was to evaluate in different ways energy savings in wastewater pumping stations and conclude what is the discrepancy between them, emphasizing on the theoretical model and measured data. Two pump stations were chosen to be modeled by mathematical calculations based on theoretical pump and system curves. Based on the same inputs, a commercial tool was used to calculate energy savings. Moreover, theoretical curves and variable speed drives were combined into an own developed testing platform in LabView, as an alternative evaluation solution. Finally, measured data was collected and used in a specific energy algorithm, designed to have as inputs water level and energy. In term of method accuracy, initial assumptions are wrong. For a given frequency, the results show similar values for all four evaluation methods. Also, variable speed is confirmed as a good control philosophy for less energy use than direct online.

Advanced Control Methods for Torque Ripple Reduction and Performance Improvement in Switched Reluctance Motor DrivesYe, Jin 11 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, advanced control methods are presented for torque ripple reduction and performance improvement in switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives.
Firstly, a comparative evaluation of power electronic converters including asymmetric, N+1, C dump, split AC, and split DC converters is presented for three-phase SRMs in terms of cost, efficiency and control performance.
Secondly, two methods are proposed using torque sharing function (TSF) concepts for torque ripple reduction of SRM over a wide speed range. An offline TSF is proposed to minimize the copper loss and the absolute rate of change of flux linkage (ARCFL) with a Tikhonov factor. Then an online TSF is proposed by adding a proportional and integral compensator with torque error to torque reference of the phase with lower ARCFL. Therefore, the total torque of online TSF is determined by the phase with lower ARCFL rather than the phase with higher ARCFL as in conventional TSFs. The maximum torque-ripple-free speed (TRFS) of the offline TSF and online TSF is validated to be 7 times and 10 times as high as the best case in these conventional TSFs, respectively.
Thirdly, two methods are proposed to eliminate mutual flux effect on rotor position estimation of SRM drives without a prior knowledge of mutual flux, one is the variable-hysteresis-band current control for the incoming-phase self-inductance estimation and the other is variable-sampling outgoing-phase self-inductance estimation. Compared with the conventional method which neglects the mutual flux effect, the proposed position estimation method demonstrates an improvement in position estimation accuracy by 2º.
Fourthly, a fixed-switching-frequency integral sliding mode current controller for SRM drives is presented, which demonstrates high dynamics, strong robustness and none steady-state error.
All the proposed control methods are verified by both simulations and experiments with a 2.3 kW, 6000 rpm, three-phase 12/8 SRM operating in both linear magnetic and saturated magnetic regions. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Distribution and Management of the Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, in VirginiaAllen, Hamilton Ross 21 January 2011 (has links)
Red imported fire ant specimens were first collected in Virginia in 1989 from colonies located in Hampton, Va. Now colonies are established throughout the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Because the fire ant is a new pest information regarding the distribution, biology, and management of the ant in Virgnia are absent. Therefore studies were conducted to compare the efficacies of four broadcast fire ant control products and an individual mound treatment to control fire ants and to determine the impact of Advion and Top Choice on non-target ant species. Additionally, twenty-six fire ant colonies in Virginia were sampled to determine colony social form and to detect biological control organisms. Lastly, the CLIMEX model was used to predict the potential spread of the fire ant in Virginia.
Field trials showed that combination applications of Advion and Top Choice provided the fastest and greatest reduction in foraging three days after treatment and the longest residual control of fire ant colonies for one year. Field tests documenting the impacts of Advion and Top Choice on non-target ants indicate treatments do supress ant foraging but ant populations will rebound 10-12 months after treatment.
Laboratory PCR assays revealed that colonies in Virginia are primarily polygyne. Also, Kneallhazia solenopsae, Pseudaction spp. parasitoid decapitating phorid flies, and Solenopsis invicta virues (SINV) genetic materials were detected in fire ant samples.
CLIMEX model results indicate that fire ants will be able to spread as far east as the Greater Richmond area and as far north as Alexandria in Virginia. / Master of Science in Life Sciences

Feasibility study of a hydrid passive/active noise absorption systemBeyene, Samson 05 December 2009 (has links)
The work described in this thesis was directed towards the development of a compact hybrid Passive/Active noise absorption system that would be effective over a wide frequency range. The Passive/Active system efficiently integrates both passive and active noise control methods. Both theoretical and experimental investigations were carried out in this work. A simple numerical model was developed to simulate the Passive/Active system.
The passive sound absorbing material used in the system was the partially-reticulated polyurethane foam. This material was characterized using its sound propagation constant and its characteristic impedance which were empirically determined.
Three different control strategies were investigated for the Passive! Active system. These control strategies were: (i) directly minimizing the reflected wave, (ii) inducing a pressure-release boundary condition on the back surface of the absorbing layer and (iii) a new approach consisting of minimizing the reflected wave in the airspace. The latter results in a match between the impedance in the air cavity and the impedance of a plane wave in air. This impedance-matching control approach was selected for the Passive/Active system because it meets the goal of optimum absorption over a wide frequency range and offers practical advantages. In this system, the error sensing process takes place inside of the airspace which results in a compact design with all the necessary sensors and actuators built into the system.
Parametric analysis were performed on the impedance-matching control approach to investigate the sensitivity of the performance of the system to variation in absorbing layer thickness and airspace depth. The performance of the system was determined to be independent of the airspace depth and marginally sensitive to absorbing layer thickness. In addition, in order to study the feasibility of using the Passive/Active system for other sound absorbing materials, an experimental investigation was performed with the polyurethane foam replaced by a porous metal sheet, commercial name FELTMETAL®. The result of this investigation showed an improvement in the absorption property of the FELTMETAL, opening a number of potential applications for the Passive/Active system by using different absorbing materials. / Master of Science

To solve numerical computation problems arising in the nonlinear controller. 3/. Cuando hablamos de optimización en el ámbito de las ciencias de la computación hacemos referencia al mismo concepto coloquial asociado a esa palabra, la concreción de un objetivo utilizando la menor cantidad de recursos disponibles, o en una visión similar, la obtención del mejor objetivo posible utilizando todos los recursos con lo que se cuenta.
Los métodos para encontrar la mejor solución (óptima) varían de acuerdo a la complejidad del problema enfrentado. Para problemas triviales, el cerebro humano posee la capacidad de resolverlos (encontrar la mejor solución) directamente, pero a medida que aumenta la complejidad del problema, se hace necesario contar con herramientas adicionales.
En esta dirección, existe una amplia variedad de técnicas para resolver problemas complejos. Dentro de estas técnicas, podemos mencionar las técnicas exactas. Este tipo de algoritmos son capaces de encontrar las soluciones óptimas a un problema dado en una cantidad finita de tiempo. Como contrapartida, requiere que el problema a resolver cumpla con condiciones bastante restrictivas.
Existen además un conjunto muy amplio de técnica aproximadas, conocidas como metaheurísticas. Estas técnicas se caracterizan por integrar de diversas maneras procedimientos de mejora local y estrategias de alto nivel para crear un proceso capaz de escapar de óptimos locales y realizar una búsqueda robusta en el espacio de búsqueda del problema. En su evolución, estos métodos han incorporado diferentes estrategias para evitar la convergencia a óptimos locales, especialmente en espacios de búsqueda complejos. Este tipo de procedimientos tienen como principal característica que son aplicables a cualquier tipo de problemas, sin requerir ninguna condición particular a cumplir por los mismos. Estas técnicas no garantizan en ningún caso la obtención de los valores óptimos de los problemas en cuestión, pero se ha demostrado que son capaces de alcanzar muy buenos valores de soluciones en períodos de tiempo cortos. Además, es posible aplicarlas a problemas de diferentes tipos sin mayores modificaciones, mostrando su robustez y su amplio espectro de uso.
La mayoría de estas técnicas están inspiradas en procesos biológicos y/o físicos, y tratan de simular el comportamiento propio de estos procesos que favorecen la búsqueda y detección de soluciones mejores en forma iterativa. La más difundida de estas técnicas son los algoritmos genéticos, basados en el mecanismo de evolución natural de las especies.
Existen diferentes tipos de problemas, y multitud de taxonomías para clasificar los mismos. En el alcance de este trabajo nos interesa diferenciar los problemas en cuanto a la cantidad de objetivos a optimizar. Con esta consideración en mente, surge una primera clasificación evidente, los problemas mono-objetivo, donde existe solo una función objetivo a optimizar, y los problemas multi-objetivo donde existe más de una función objetivo. En el presente trabajo se estudia la utilización de metaheurísticas evolutivas para la resolución de problemas complejos, con uno y con más de un objetivo. Se efectúa un análisis del estado de situación en la materia, y se proponen nuevas variantes de algoritmos existentes, validando que las mismas mejoran resultados reportados en la literatura.
En una primera instancia, se propone una mejora a la versión canónica y mono-objetivo del algoritmo PSO, luego de un estudio detallado del patrón de movimientos de las partículas en el espacio de soluciones.
Estas mejoras se proponen en las versiones de PSO para espacios continuos y para espacios binarios. Asimismo, se analiza la implementación de una versión paralela de esta técnica evolutiva.
Como segunda contribución, se plantea una nueva versión de un algoritmo PSO multiobjetivo (MOPSO Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization) incorporando la posibilidad de variar dinámicamente el tamaño de la población, lo que constituye una contribución innovadora en problemas con mas de una función objetivo.
Por último, se utilizan las técnicas representativas del estado del arte en optimización multi-objetivo aplicando estos métodos a la problemática de una empresa de emergencias médicas y atención de consultas domiciliarias. Se logró poner en marcha un proceso de asignación de móviles a prestaciones médicas basado en metaheurísticas, logrando optimizar el proceso de asignación de móviles médicos a prestaciones médicas en la principal compañía de esta industria a nivel nacional. / Tesis doctoral de la Facultad de Informática (UNLP).
