No primeiro romance dessa fase, Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno, o escritor traz para o plano central do romance as histórias da resistenza, marcada pela luta dos partigiani contra a ocupação alemã. Da literatura engajada, Calvino passou à literatura fantástica, bem representada pela trilogia I Nostri antenati, em que utiliza-se de características e temáticas de toda a tradição literária para compor imagens que, apesar de dissonantes com o contexto histórico-social do escritor, acabam por representar figurações de suas idéias acerca dos desafios que se mostram ao homem e à literatura de sua época. Observando a obra romanesca de Calvino até esse momento, é possível perceber que ela desenvolve um percurso temático que parte do empenho rumo às reflexões sobre o ato criador, que Calvino desenvolveria em obras posteriores. Neste percurso, o romance Il barone rampante constitui o ponto central da trilogia, romance em que o escritor demonstra um distanciamento do engajamento rumo às questões filosófico-sociais, mas que já apresenta, também, concretização de algumas de suas idéias literárias no desenvolver a narrativa. O intuito do presente trabalho é demonstrar como Calvino utiliza-se de constantes retomadas da tradição literária na constituição de imagens narrativas que, por extraordinárias que possam parecer, acabam por se apresentar como imagens das principais idéias do escritor sobre o momento em que vive, constituindo o que aqui é chamado de realismoinverossímil. / Italo Calvino started his literary work in post-war historical context. A moment that had caused the neo-realistic period in literature as a result from social more than literary needs. In the fisrt work in this period, Il Sentiero dei nidi di ragno, the writer presents stories from the resistenza, marked by partigiani's fights against germanic occupation. From engaged literature Calvino passed to fantastic literature, well represented by I Nostri antenati trilogy, in wich he employs characteristics and themes from literary tradition to build images. In despite of their non-direct relation with the writer's social-historical context that images figuratively present his ideas about the challenges that both man an literature faced in the moment when his is wrinting. Looking at his novels from this moment, we can see that they have a thematic development that goes from the engagement to some thoughts about the creative act. The novel Il Barone rampante is the central point in the trilogy. It is quite distant from the engagement in its pointing to socialphilosophical questions and presents the concretization of some ideas about the creative act. Our pourpose here is to show how Calvino uses the literary tradition in order to build narrative images that, in despite of their extraordinarity, figures as his main ideas about the moment in which he lives, and because of that they constitue what we call here relismo-inverossímil.

Cosimo pode ser lido como um microcosmo do período em questão e, através da narrativa de suas aventuras, é possível traçar um percurso intelectual do homem ocidental. Este trabalho tem por objetivos discutir as relações entre Ficção e História, através das análises estrutural e discursiva de Il barone rampante, e analisar a formação intelectual e de valores do protagonista, paralela a uma genealogia do romance, apresentada na obra. Para tanto, verificaremos a relação dos romances aos quais Il barone rampante faz referências com o crescimento do público leitor e com o nascimento e o amadurecimento do gênero literário que surge no berço da sociedade burguesa: o romance. Também serão discutidas as influências das obras iluministas no pensamento e nas ações do personagem, uma vez que, na figura de Cosimo, vemos um personagem leitor, inventor, filósofo e contador de histórias. Para o estudo da relação entre Ficção e História, privilegiaremos a reflexão metaficcional que aparece na voz do narrador, numa discussão sobre o papel do historiador e do escritor literário e a tênue linha que os separa. Aliada a essa discussão, verificaremos o posicionamento estético e ideológico de Calvino diante de suas reflexões ensaísticas sobre o papel da literatura e do intelectual na contemporaneidade. / Published in 1957 and joined to the Our Ancestors trilogy in 1965, The Baron in the Trees, by Italo Calvino, is a portrait of the changes in Europe during the 18th century, shown through the preposterous life of Cosimo, the baron that lived in the trees. Cosimo can be interpreted as a microcosm of the 18th century, and the tale of his adventures is a way to trace the intellectual journey of the West. The present work aims to discuss the relationship between history and fiction with the structural and discursive analysis of The Baron in the Trees, and to analyze the intellectual and moral coming of age of the main character, along with a genealogy of the novel, presented in Calvino's work. To that end, we will show the relationship between the novels The Baron in the Trees alludes to and the growth of the readership, the birth and the coming of age of the literary genre that is part of the origins of the bourgeois society: the novel. We will also discuss the impact of the Enlightenment on the thoughts and actions of the main character, since, in the person of Cosimo, we see a reader, an inventor, a philosopher and a storyteller. To study the relationship between fiction and history, we shall prioritize the metafictional reflexion that appears in the narrator's voice, in a discussion about the role of the historian and the author and the thin line that keeps them apart. We will also investigate Calvino's aesthetic and ideological position in his reflexions on the role of literature and of the scholars in the modern world.

Para tal, serão observados alguns diálogos que a obra estabelece com o poema épico-cavaleiresco Orlando furioso de Ludovico Ariosto no âmbito da formação identitária dos entes ficcionais e da própria narrativa e, além disso, das fronteiras entre a literatura e a realidade. / The present work aims at analysing the search for art and existence occurs in The Non- Existent Knight by Italo Calvino. To fulfil this analysis, it will be closely observed the dialogues between The Non-Existent Knight with the knight-epic poem Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto respecting features such as identity construction of the fictional and the narrative itself, and, the boundaries between literature and reality.
