Essa Carta foi escrita pelo escrivão da frota de Pedro Álvares Cabral, quando este chegou ao Brasil em 1500. A ortografia usada reflete a tradição escrita da corte de Portugal no final do século XV / Abstract: This dissertation presents some aspects of the spelling in the famous Carta, written by Pero Vaz de Caminha, reporting the discovery of Brazil to the king of Portugal in 1500 BC. This work represents a contribution to the study of Portuguese orthography. It also contributes to the study of spelling, in general. Caminha's spelling is typical of the XV century orthography in Portugal. It follows the court tendency in writing, since the Carta' s author was an official secretary at the Govemment Chancellery. Compared to actual Portuguese orthography, Caminha's spelling is not so much different. The major differences are found in the common use of abbreviated forms, in the writing material display on paper and in capital letters and punctuation marks. These situations regard to the colonial project as a whole and, therefore, to the Discovery of Brazil. Among the main objectives, there are those geared towards the comprehension of the ideological reasons of the Letter's writer, as well as the relationship between ideology and the use of figure of speech present in the document written by him. George Lakoff and Mark Johnson found that the language used is a wide metaphorical system. Using as basic reference the analysis methodology of figures of speech suggested by these Researchers, the analysis was carried out on the figured speech that is part of the Letter. By this work, we come to the conclusion, that the ideological conditions linked to the context of the Discovery of Brazil justify the use of such linguistic resources, such as the figured speech. This is not only an option, since it is linked to the specific and essential needs, including the comprehension of the ideological conditions / Esse trabalho nasce da constatação de que o autor da carta de achamento, Pero Vaz de Caminha, teve de usar determinados recursos linguísticos para inscrever em seu texto dados relativos a situações inusitadas aos portugueses do século XVI. Situações estas que se associam ao projeto colonial como um todo e, portanto, à descoberta do Brasil. Dentre os principais objetivos figuram aqueles voltados à compreensão das motivações ideológicas do escrivão da carta, bem como à relação entre ideologia e o uso de figuras de linguagem presente no documento redigido por ele. George Lakoff e Mark Johnson constataram ser a linguagem regida por um amplo sistema conceptual metafórico. Tendo principalmente como referencial a metodologia de análise de figuras de linguagem sugerida por esses pesquisadores, efetuou-se a análise da linguagem figurada que compõem a missiva. Chegamos à conclusão, por meio desse trabalho, que condições ideológicas ligadas ao contexto da descoberta do Brasil, justificaram o uso de determinados recursos linguísticos, tais como a linguagem figurada.
