Esse estudo buscou conhecer a vivência do cuidador familiar do paciente com câncer. Trata-se de pesquisa descritiva com abordagem qualitativa, na qual participaram quatorze cuidadores familiares, vinculados à Unidade de Tratamento Oncológico do Hospital Estadual de Bauru (HEB), norteados pela questão: Qual sua experiência em cuidar do (nome do paciente)? Os dados foram coletados no período de abril a maio de 2011, por meio de entrevista estruturada gravada. Utilizou-se a vertente fenomenológica para categorizar os discursos coletados. As categorias evidenciadas foram: Os sentidos do cuidar na existência do cuidador familiar; câncer: significados e sentimentos; e mudanças sociais relacionadas ao cuidar, com suas respectivas temáticas. Os resultados apontam para a importância de os profissionais da saúde considerar paciente e cuidador como unidade de cuidado, pois o cuidador sofre um grande impacto em sua vida, com mudanças em seu cotidiano e estão sujeitos a adoecer ou apresentar sentimentos como medo, angústia e impotência / Cancer and treatment have a major influence on patients and their relatives. This is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, involving fourteen family caregivers attached to the Cancer Care Unit from Hospital Estadual Bauru, guided to the subject: what your experience in take care (name patient)?. Datas were collected from April to May of 2011, through structured recorded interview. Using phenomenological analysis to categorize the speeches collected. The categories highlighted were: the meanings of care in the existence of family caregiver; cancer: meanings and feelings; and social changes related to care, with respective thematic. The results indicate the importance of the professionals health to consider patient and caregiver as unit of care, because the caregiver suffers an impact on your life, with changes in their daily lives, subject to ill, develop feelings as fear, anguish and impotence
