Experimental study of surfactant-aided enhanced oil recovery in carbonate rock

The application of surfactants and polymers in carbonate reservoirs has a high potential with emerging technology of the manufacture of these chemicals. Tertiary or enhanced oil recovery with chemicals (CEOR) will become more relevant with decreasing new exploration of oil deposits and high remaining oil saturations in huge carbonate oil reservoirs. However, in several oil deposits, high reservoir brine salinity and moderate to high reservoir temperature are encountered. Under such conditions, many chemicals will be insoluble or degrade fast. A selection of commercial and research surfactants and polymers has been investigated for their application under brine salinity of up to 18 percent by weight with significant hardness and a moderate reservoir temperature of 70 °C. Chemical systems were tested towards outcrop limestone rock samples and calcite platelets in combination with a crude oil, which was modified by different organic acids regarding its wetting potential. Wettability alteration from preferentially oil-wet core plugs was pursued with ethoxylated tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium compounds. The main mechanism of wettability alteration towards more water-wet was proposed as extraction of carboxylate anions from the oil phase and the solid samples into aqueous micelles. Thus, high surfactant concentrations would result in improved recovery. From screening of different surfactant combinations in tertiary core flooding, one promising system of an alkyl ether sulfate and hexadecyltrimethylammonium combined with a terpolymer (TP) from acrylic acid, ATBS and NVP is proposed for the examined conditions. Low to moderate adsorption of the single surfactants and their combination as well as a favorable, stabilized phase behavior when combined with the polymer emphasize the applicability of the system. However, long term stability can be an issue with respect to the sulfate surfactant degradation at 70 °C. Analysis of mixed ionic surfactant systems after adsorption testing has been successfully pursued with a combined TC/TNb-determination.

Forward numerical modelling of carbonate basins: an ecological approach

This thesis presents a new stratigraphic forward numerical model to simulate the carbonate production of marine sedimentary basin through ecological model which is implemented in the SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC program. This ecological model is based on the Generalized Lotka Voltera equations that model the population evolution of species. These populations are controlled by biological factors (growth rate, carrying capacity and interaction among species), and by the environmental conditions (light, energy of the medium, nutrients, bottom slope and concentration of clastic sediments in suspension) which are combined forming a unique environmental factor that downscale the intrinsic rate of growth. The algorithm to apply in the code uses an explicit Runge-Kutta numerical method of order (4)5 to solve the differential equations formulated in the ecological model. Finally, a 3D visualization output files for the interpretation and analysis are generated using the VTK format. The obtained code has been applied in three sample experiments in order to discuss the possibilities and the limitations of the code. The first example is the model of a theoretical basin. The results are compared with real cases. The second example is an actual basin sited in western Mediterranean Sea. The results are discussed to show the applicability and the limitations of the model. The third example applies several configurations to the Aptian Galve sub-basin (Maestrat Basin, E Iberia), allowing to define the environmental conditions.

History matching sensitivity investigations and forecasting for low matrix porosity, permeability and highly fractured carbonate reservoir to optimize oil production in Kurdistan Region

Increasing of the oil recovery is an essential task of the reservoir engineers. Many highly fractured carbonate reservoirs with low matrix porosity and low matrix permeability in the world have been depleted with low ultimate recovery due to the improper management. To obtain higher oil recovery and an optimum oil production, a three dimensional geological model for the reservoir is needed. The reservoir model should be calibrated via the history matching process which makes the model reliable for forecasting and development planning. An investigation has been carried out to find the most sensitive parameter which affects the matching between the real production data and the simulated production data. After the calibration of the model, some prediction scenarios have been run to realize the future performance of the reservoir. Three wells have been suggested and included in the simulation as producers in some prediction cases and as gas injectors in another other case. The results show that the three producers with low production rate will assist in increasing the recovery and by converting those to gas injectors will assist more especially when the oil production rate is higher. An oil field in Kurdistan region has been selected for this research.
