Development of a field tested career decision workbook for Bible college freshmen

Bartlett, William D. 06 June 2008 (has links)
Bible college personnel face a unique challenge in providing career counseling to their students. Bible college students hold a deeply religious world view which can bear directly upon their career decision-making. The purpose of this study was to develop a career decision making workbook for Bible college freshmen. The development of such a workbook required the identification of relevant spiritual determinants, appropriate career development resources, and the integration of career decision-making theory with a theology of work and leisure. Research and development methods used in the study included (1) initial document design, incorporating the use of instructional design principles; (2) review of readability experts; (3) preliminary field testing with students; and, (4) main field testing with students. The field tests were conducted as two-day workshops, involving a total of 38 subjects. The subjects were Bible college freshmen who volunteered to participate. The preliminary field test was conducted at a Bible college in southern West Virginia. The main field test involved three Bible colleges in the southeastern United States. Student interviews and a pretest-posttest design were utilized to obtain data on the workbook’s effectiveness. Field test results indicated that the workbook helped subjects to (1) crystallize their current career thinking, (2) increase their appreciation for a spiritual-rational model, (3) understand the importance of leisure as part of the concept of career, and (4) seriously think about the future consequences of decisions. Subjects performed poorly on the terminal objective, i.e., the making of a tentative career decision. However, low scores were thought to be an indicator of the limited nature of the workshop format rather than a reflection of the effectiveness of the workbook. Major conclusions were that (1) the workbook has the potential to encourage improved career decision-making skills for students and, (2) the workbook is adaptable to a variety of Bible college settings. Recommendations for document revision, operational field testing, and summative evaluation are presented. / Ed. D.

Adriaanse, J. L. 30 November 2007 (has links)
This research aims to attain insight into the role a person's processing style (process) have on decision-making from a career developmental and gestalt perspective because it appears as if the adolescent's proses with regard to career choice is not being acknowledged. Semi-structured interviews were used to generate data from which coded themes were identified. These coded themes served as the core research of this study. The subjective experience of respondents' career development are presented, supported by a literature control. From this research it is clear that the adolescent's process is dynamic with regard to field and phenomenology and that structures such as family and school plays an important career developmental role as environmental influences. Intra psychic constructs such as introjects, assimilation and process play an important role in decision-making. / Sociology / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

Family correlates of career maturity attitudes in rural high school students with learning disabilities

Midock, Randall L. 06 June 2008 (has links)
This study focused on influential factors affecting the career maturity attitudes of rural high school students with learning disabilities. A variety of variables were studied in each of the following areas: personal demographics, learning disability characteristics, ability/achievement levels, vocational preparation, and family characteristics. Variables from each of the clusters were entered into a variables selection program designed to depict the best combination of variables for use in a multiple regression equation. Through this process the twenty seven original variables were refined into a final combined pool of the eight most powerful variables which impacted upon the student's career maturity attitudes. The eight top contributors were entered into a multiple regression equation to determine their relative contributions to career maturity attitudes. Family appeared to play an important role in the career maturity attitudes of this sample as variables from the family cluster accounted for four of the eight variables selected for the final equation. Two of the those family variables were the family systems constructs of adaptability and cohesion, as measured by the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES II). To gain further insight regarding the impact of family dynamics on the functioning of students with learning disabilities, six stepwise multiple regression equations were also run, one for each scale of the Career Maturity Inventory-Attitude Scale. The results suggested a small but negative relationship exists between perceived family adaptability and career maturity attitudes. Students who perceived their families as less adaptable, or less flexible, tended to demonstrate higher career maturity attitudes. Cohesion, however, demonstrated a positive and stronger relationship, showing closer bonds among family members to be an important element supporting maturity in the student's career attitudes. / Ph. / Based on Social Support Theory and Relational Theory of Working, two parallel sub-studies were conducted to explore the relationship among early parental support, contemporary parental support, university students’ career adaptability, and their career decision-making difficulties. The current study therefore pursues following three research objectives: 1) to verify and refine the Relational Theory of Working; 2) to explore and examine the mechanism of the relationship between parental support and university students’ career development; and 3) to respond to previous inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between parental support and individuals’ career adaptability, and the relationship between parental support and career decision-making difficulties. / Study 1 focused on the relationship among early parental support, university students’ career adaptability, and their chronical career decision-making difficulties. 455 college students participated in study 1, among whom 203 are male (45%) and 252 are female (55%). Study 2 investigated the relationship among contemporary parental support, university students’ career adaptability, career certainty, and their general career decision-making difficulties. 467 students were involved. Among them, 237 are male (51%), 230 are female (49%). The theoretical model of Study 1 was built mainly upon the developmental perspective of social support theory. The underlying theory of Study 2 was the contextual perspective of social support theory. The theoretical models of the two studies were examined through Structural Equational Model. The models were run separately for male and female students, with both fathers’ and mothers’ support data in the model, instead of treating parents’ data as a whole. A series of mediation models were also performed to get much detailed knowledge of the mechanism of the relationship between parental support and university students’ career development. / The results well supported the Relational Theory of Working. At the same time, the mechanism of the relationship between early parental support, contemporary parental support, students’ career development was revealed. Findings show that 1) early parental support could predict students’ career adaptability positively, while predict career decision-making difficulty negatively through students’ self affirmation of their own worth and competence; 2) contemporary parental support could predict career certainty through students’ career adaptation resources. Career certainty could further predict students’ career decision-making difficulty; 3) differences existed between male and female students’ mechanism of the relationship between parental support and career development. However, consistent findings were opposite-sex parents’ early support, fathers’ contemporary career related support, mothers’ contemporary general support played important roles for both male and female students. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 142-164). / Abstracts in Chinese and English. / Zhou Sili.
