This thesis proposes to analyze the process of conquest of territory of the Capitania of Goias in the eighteenth century revealed in historical cartography. The corpus of 17 maps an assembled in this work represent the territory in regional and cutouts in the limits of the geographical space. The maps are perceived as documents that reflect the process of creation and consolidation of Captaincy, also comprise the expansion in the interior of the colony with the exploitation and spatialization of regions, establishment of settlements, establishment of the bureaucratic apparatus, imposing cultural and administrative domain. By the use of symbols, codes, colors and words, the cartographic image constructs the territorial narrative. We approach the narrative as the cartographic expression of ideas, motives, interests and ambitions, expressed by social actors who have experienced and interacted in a space of conquest and imposition of the Portuguese State, wrapped in diplomatic dispute period between the Iberian Crowns for possessions in America. We seek to relate the maps, arrange them by the similarities of the forms, noting its aspects, considering the records of the information and the influences that maps exerted on other maps, this exercise resulted in the finding of the existence of cartographic standards. The patterns suggest that eventually the cartography of Goias was drafted in a different dynamic captaincies established in coastline and within the limits of Portuguese America with the Spanish America. The mapping of the 18th century presents to historiography of Goias possibilities of readings and new angles of approach, on the mutual comparison with handwritten documents and interpretation of images.

The present thesis search to study Goiás through historical cartography. Therefore, identified and systematized eighty-three maps in total, produced according to the most varied reasons, from 1722 until 1889. From these cartographic documents, it was possible to identify and record the transformations of the territorial boundaries of Goiás; locate and reconstitute the main networks of terrestrial paths then existing (having the old Vila Boa as center, and after Cidade de Goiás); and identify the group of villages constituted during the studied period. As a final product, besides creating its own methodology for the systematization of such a large universe of documents, the research generated the following specific products: a timeline which relates the cartographic production with the main administrative events of Goiás; a set of eighty-three cartographic file cards, with the technical specifications and comments on each of the maps; the georeferencing of exemplary map; the pioneer modeling of the relief of the Capitania de Goiás based on the historical cartography; and the creation of a chart with the consolidation of information about the formation and evolution of villages identified in the territory of Goiás. Finally, it was demonstrated that, more important than the actual value of each of the maps individually studied, was the possibility of interpretation of the territory and its connections that the analysis of all the material provided.
