Todos os textos (seis contos e uma peça de teatro) foram produzidos entre 1862 e 1868. Partimos, principalmente, de uma sensação de "inconstância", nos mais variados sentidos, que acreditamos emergir de seus escritos. Inicialmente, fizemos algumas considerações acerca da reiterada associação entre sua obra e o universo da Literatura fantástica. Partindo especificamente do que consideramos um "teor erótico" inerente a essa tradição, nos empenhamos em esboçar um "imaginário" que servirá de fundo para o caráter mais amplo de nossa análise. Para tanto, valemo-nos principalmente das reflexões de Georges Bataille (1897-1962), em O Erotismo (1957), e de Wolfgang Kayser (1906-1960), em O Grotesco: configuração na arte e na literatura (1957). Ao longo do percurso, buscamos identificar alguns recursos significativos empregados pelo autor na construção dos textos, dando especial enfoque às representações do amor, da sexualidade e das "paixões violentas", em geral. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Literatura portuguesa, Álvaro do Carvalhal, Contos, O Castigo da vingança! / Abstract: The main purpose of this work is to offer a possible way of reading the works of the still almost unknown Portuguese author Álvaro do Carvalhal (1844-1868). All texts (six stories and one play) were written between 1862 and 1868. We started mainly from a sensation of "inconstancy", in most variable ways, that emerges from these texts. Initially, we made some considerations about the frequently mentioned association between his works and the universe of 18th fantastic literature. Based specifically on what could be thought as an "erothic sense" inherent to this tradiction, we strived to sketch an "imagery" that coud work as a background for the broader sense of our analysis. Aiming to sketch this "imagery", we recurred to some reflections by Georges Bataille (1897-1962), in Erotism (1957), and by Wolfgang Kayser (1906-1960) in The Grotesque in Art and Literature (1957). According to that background, we tried to point out some of the most characteristic literary procedures employed by Carvalhal in his narratives, focusing principally on the representations of love, sexuality, and the human "violent passions", in general.
