Women living with HIV/AIDS: a phenomenological intergenerational interpretation of their experiences

This study deals with the impact of HIV/AIDS on women living in chronic poverty. The question arises: Do we focus on their HIV/AIDS stories only or do we include their other lived experiences? This phenomenological study, on two sets of three generations of women infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and living in poverty, is an attempt at understanding the way the women experience their lifeworlds, not only their HIV/AIDS stories. One set includes a grandmother, her daughter who is living with full-blown AIDS, and her granddaughter, while the other includes a grandmother, her daughter and her granddaughter infected with HIV. The initial focus of the study was on the women’s HIV/AIDS narratives. However as the study progressed, especially during the interviews, it became apparent that the women’s generational poverty or chronic poverty was of greater concern to them than the HIV/AIDS that they were experiencing. Of the six participants, only one woman centred her life story on HIV/AIDS. This finding echoes other studies on HIV/AIDS among poor women: that chronic poverty is more threatening to the women than the risk or reality of AIDS. As a phenomenological researcher my aim was to focus on the participants’ own interpretations of the studied phenomenon. However, this was inadequate in accounting for the role that social structures play in shaping and informing the women’s subjective consciousness and experience. For this reason, I used feminist ideas to understand and interpret the women’s patriarchal experiences.

The effect of load and technique on biomechanical and psychophysical responses to level dynamic pushing and pulling

Pushing and pulling research has yet to fully elucidate the demands placed on manual workers despite established epidemiological links to musculoskeletal disorders. The current study therefore aimed to quantify biomechanical and perceptual responses of male operators to dynamic pushing and pulling tasks. Three common push/pull techniques (pushing, one handed and two handed pulling) were performed at loads of 250kg and 500kg using an industrial pallet jack in a laboratory environment. Thirty six healthy male subjects (age: 21 ±2 years, stature: 1791 ±43 mm and body mass: 77 ±10 kg) were required to perform six loaded experimental and two unloaded control conditions. Hand force exertion, muscle activity and gait pattern responses were collected during 10m push/pull trials on a coefficient controlled walkway; body discomfort was assessed on completion of the condition. Horizontal hand force responses were significantly (p<0.05) affected by load, with a linear relationship existing between the two. This relationship is determined by specific environmental and trolley factors and is context specific, depending on factors such as trolley maintenance and type of flooring. Hand force exertion responses were tenuously affected by technique at higher loads in the initial and sustained phases, with pushing inducing the greatest hand forces. Comparison of the motion phases revealed significant differences between all three phases, with the initial phase evidencing the greatest hand forces. Muscle activity responses demonstrated that unloaded backward walking evoked significantly higher muscle activation than did unloaded forward walking whilst increased muscular activity during load movement compared to unloaded walking was observed. However increasing load from 250kg to 500kg did not significantly impact the majority of muscle activity responses. When considering technique effects on muscle activity, of the significant differences found, all indicated that pushing imposed the least demand on the musculoskeletal system. Gait pattern responses were not significantly affected by load/technique combinations and were similar to those elicited during normal, unloaded walking. Perceptually, increased load led to increased perception of discomfort while pushing resulted in the least discomfort at both loads. From these psychophysical responses, the calves, shoulders and biceps were identified as areas of potential musculoskeletal injury, particularly during one and two handed pulling. Pushing elicited the highest hand forces and the lowest muscle activity responses in the majority of the conditions whilst psychophysical responses identified this technique as most satisfactory. Current results advocate the use of pushing when moving a load using a wheeled device. Suitability of one and two handed pulling remains contradictory, however results suggest that one handed pulling be employed at lower loads and two handed pulling at higher loads.

Use of the internet in newsgathering : a case study of The Post newspaper in Zambia

The Internet and World Wide Web have become dominant newsgathering tools in a sholi period of time. While the body of research, particularly in the First World, has developed quickly along with the Web, many unanswered questions remain on how journalists in developing countries make use of the Internet for newsgathering purposes. This study combined social constructivist theory with the socio-organisational and cultural approaches to news production in order to critically investigate how journalists at The Post newspaper in Zambia relate to, and make use of, the Internet as a newsgathering resource, in the context of Third World conditions. The study critiqued technological detelminism perspectives on journalists' use of the new information technology. The technological determinism theory, which has largely been advanced by some scholars from the developed world, takes a celebratory approach to journalists' use of the Internet in the newsroom. Using qualitative semi-structured interviews and observations, the study established that while journalists at The Post acknowledged the lnternet's potential in news gathering, factors such as unreliable telecommunications infrastructure, poor Internet skills, lack of local content on the World Wide Web, and organisational and occupational demands inhibited the use of the Internet as a journalistic newsgathering resource. The study established further that online reporting is only a tool within the broader news gathering and production process; and in the case of The Post, it does not replace the traditional news gathering techniques used by journalists, particularly direct contacts with human sources. The respondents cited face-to-face interviews, a traditional means of newsgathering, as the main driving force in news gathering routines at the newspaper. The development of a new identity through the process of bereavement counselling : a qualitative study.

The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore how narrative therapy may facilitate not only a lessening of distressing symptoms for bereaved persons, but may also facilitate growth in identity. Five case studies are presented. The participants were chosen to illuminate different grief experiences. The case studies include a description of grieving people from different backgrounds, each with a unique relationship with the person or people who died, all of whom had different causes of death such as suicide, murder and natural causes. These differences provide an opportunity to explore the application of the therapy model with a range of grief experiences. A full and rich description of the experiences of the participants yield insight into the shared themes such as the impact of social expectations of how a grieving person should conduct him or herself, difficult physical and emotional experiences, the many losses flowing from the death, as well as an in-depth discussion of the identity growth that takes place as the bereaved person takes on different roles and tasks. Postmodern epistemology and social constructivism informed the praxis and interpretation of narrative therapy as bereavement model. Narrative therapy is shown as especially effective for grief therapy with therapeutic tenets such as deconstructing and creating richer narratives and alternative stories that enables the bereaved to explore diverse aspects of their character. The emphasis on what remains rather than what is lost, and the concept of remembering the loved one who died in the community of those who stay behind, transmute the loss-story to one of remembering and incorporating, which tends to bring significant emotional relief. This study contributes towards the field of growth through bereavement for which there seems to be a paucity in research. Furthermore, it provides additional evidence for post-traumatic growth in general, especially with the assistance of narrative therapy. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

Creating a branding strategy for Jacquards : focussing on 2010 opportunities

Da Gama Textiles, based in the Eastern Cape has seen its sales of Jacquard products being affected in recent years by cheaper imported products. A study was required to enable its senior management to develop a branding strategy for its Jacquard products. In addition, senior managers required information about how to take advantage of the 2010 World Cup. Data collection was conducted in July to September 2009, using two population groups. The first one was bed and breakfast managers in KwaZulu-Natal, with the second one being top ten Jacquard customers by volume in South Africa. Results showed that awareness levels for Da Gama’s Jacquard products are low, although more than half of respondents would be willing to receive literature from Da Gama in the future relating to Jacquard products. Among the top ten customers, loyalty levels were found to be high, however customers were not satisfied with Da Gama’s price levels and felt that designs and delivery lead times could be improved. A suggested branding strategy was drafted, targeting both population groups. A strategy to build brand awareness and brand loyalty levels was suggested for bed and breakfast managers, while a strategy to improve brand loyalty levels was suggested for the top ten customers. / Business Administration / M. Teacher education by means of internship : a case study

Teacher education through open and distance learning (ODL) and internships is not only crucial to addressing current and future needs of learners in South Africa, and Africa as a whole, it also encapsulates the possibilities of several much-needed new perspectives on these two fields. This research is a qualitative case study drawing from the subjective views of both the mentor teachers and the student-teacher interns already immersed in the ethos and everyday workings of a functioning local private school, PS. A case study was deemed to be an appropriate research design as the researcher is based on site and was able to spend extended time investigating, exploring and observing the student-teacher interns and their mentor teachers going about their daily routine. The sample of participants chosen comprised of the student teachers already based at PS and studying through ODL together with their assigned mentor teachers. The findings of this study reveal an expansion of the student-teacher intern’s field of involvement and participation in the school and all school related activities. The mentor teachers, as the data revealed, also benefitted in various ways and most importantly were provided with an opportunity to reflect on their personal teaching practice and philosophy. The study examined factors that facilitated or impeded the development and professional growth of the student-teacher intern and these factors had a direct bearing on the relationship that existed between the student teacher and their class mentor teacher. The data was collated from the open-ended questionnaires, the informal discussions held and the daily observation of the intern programme in action. The principle recommendations resulting from this study is based on the reported range of benefits to both the student teacher and the mentor teacher. The intern programme can be recognised and valued as a relevant contribution to the South African educational system as it would seem that the student teachers coming through this system feel confident, well informed and professionally ready to take on their own class of learners. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Visitor perceptions and awareness of litter at the Johannesburg Zoo

The aim of the study was to determine how litter affects the image of the environment and the animals at the Johannesburg Zoo, situated in the Northern part of Johannesburg, as perceived by various stakeholders. Furthermore, effectiveness of the educational awareness programmes developed and currently being presented at the Zoo were assessed. The central themes of the research on the issue of litter in a conservation area included the current status of litter in the Johannesburg Zoo, the perception of stakeholders frequenting or living in the vicinity of the Zoo and the nature and effectiveness of educational programmes presented at the Zoo. The stakeholders included visitors (n=332), employees (n=20) and others who represented the Zoo and people from the neighbouring Forest Town. It was possible to collect data on the premises while the Zoo was in full operation. The data-collection tools included two questionnaires (for visitors and employees) and interviews (other stakeholders), as well as a reflective recall of eight years of hands-on experiences and observations of a current curator at the Zoo. The latter served as a situation analysis of the Zoo to provide a backdrop for exploring the litter problem and served as background for designing the data-collection tools. The data of the survey conducted with questionnaires was quantitative in nature and was analysed descriptively in form of frequencies and percentages. The qualitative data gathered by means of the interviews were analysed and described against the experiences, beliefs and contact with the Zoo of the specific stakeholder. The educational programmes were described and the content assessed based on the effectiveness regarding litter minimisation information. The situation analysis revealed some tragic consequences of littering at the Zoo. It became clear that educating the public was a necessity to provide knowledge in such a way that it would inculcate a spirit of caring about and valuing the environment and the animals. All stakeholders identified that the Zoo has a serious litter problem and that the signboards needed more specific litter control messages and should be placed strategically so that they are noticed. Although the number of dustbins were sufficient, their distribution and placement in and around the Zoo were not effective. Educational programmes were considered by all to be the answer to the litter problem if the content could be expanded to include information on the consequences of and the legislation on littering. However, despite the rapid growth and extensive use of chiropractic, good descriptive data on chiropractors and their patients remains limited (Coulter and Shekelle, 2005). Even fewer studies have been reported which deal specifically with patients attending chiropractic-teaching clinics (Nyiendo and Olsen, 1988). According to Nyiendo and Haldeman (1986), there remains a paucity of empirical data regarding the type of patients seeking care at a chiropractic-teaching clinic and the types of treatments provided at these clinics. According to Till and Till (2000), South Africa is largely a developing country with scattered developed communities. Its requirements and opportunities as they relate to chiropractic may differ significantly from those in other developed countries. It was also estimated that in South Africa only a fraction of the country’s population have any notion of what chiropractic is, thus the largest challenge lies with educating the public about chiropractic (http://www.chiroweb.com, 2005). The lack of attention given to the chiropractic management of extremity conditions has contributed to a perception that chiropractic is unable to manage extremity conditions proficiently (Hoskins et al., 2006). There is a noted lack of research on the management of extremity conditions within chiropractic (Hoskins et al., 2006); therefore the current study focused on all components of the extremity system. Understanding the differences in marking performance of JSC mathematics markers in Namibia

Education reform in Namibia brought about changes to mathematics education since independence. This has put pressure on the government to provide both resources and qualified mathematics teachers to help drive the reform process in all teaching and learning activities. This included availing reliable and valid national examination results which is a measure of whether the newly introduced programmes are working or not. For the Ministry of Education this meant training more mathematics teachers and ensuring that competent and reliable teachers are appointed for marking national examination every year. The teachers' training process however, has not been going as fast as it was expected and year after year the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment experienced problems in obtaining competent teachers for the marking of national examination. The purpose of the study was to understand the differences in marking performances of the JSC mathematics national examination markers. Particularly the study was to create a clear and detailed understanding of different factors that could possibly affect the marking performance of different markers. In addition, the study was to investigate the effect the mathematical content knowledge of the markers has on their marking performance. It was evident from the findings that their mathematical content knowledge had influenced their marking performance. Moreover the research findings also gave a strong indication that there are other factors that were influencing the markers marking performance. These were the markers' knowledge of the assessment and marking process, the markers' marking experience, the markers' socioeconomic background. The difference in their moderators' input has emerged as the other factors that have influenced their performance in marking and consequently contributed to the differences in their marking performances.

Community participation and project sustainability in rural Zimbabwe: the case of Sangwe communal lands

Development thinkers and practitioners have been pondering over community participation for the last decades. Some even called the 1980s a decade of participation in development discourse while others also view the current decade of social movements, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Community-Based Organizations as a manifestation of organized community participation. The Sangwe Communal Lands is one such area that researchers in the last decades have been pondering over the role of community participation in project sustainability. Likewise this study evaluates the effectiveness of community participation in Sangwe where it has been hypothesized that the current participation discourse has not lived up to its billing of ensuring sustainable projects. The research therefore explores some of the politics surrounding community participation in Sangwe and Zimbabwe at large. From one angle to the other, the research overviews some of the different theoretical orientations, goals, processes and practices that are commonly used but not always recognized to constitute genuine community participation. The research is intended to clarify some of the differences that emerge when projects are designed, and to stimulate discussion about community participation more generally. This study shows that the local communities who in this case are the reason for being of NGOs and their programmes are quite critical in development projects undertaken in their own areas. This to a larger extent determines the success of development initiatives at all levels. Such a scenario calls for a proper sustainable and pro-rural community legal and policy framework as a pre-requisite for sustainable projects. The study further highlights the need for development workers and agents to change their attitude towards communities and their indigenous knowledge systems. They need to co-opt community indigenous knowledge as a system that has a unique contribution to sustainable development. Above all, attitude change is the pillar for the New World System and 21st century development paradigm that respects local values, concerns, culture, and aspirations and that these should be taken on board in the management of development programmes.
