Observation of Reactor Antineutrinos with the CHANDLER Detector

Subedi, Tulasi Prasad 26 October 2020 (has links)
Experimental anomalies hint at the possible existence of a sterile neutrino. Several experiments have been searching for the sterile neutrino, but none can claim either its discovery or fully rule it out. To test the sterile neutrino hypothesis, we search for short baseline oscillations using antineutrinos from nuclear reactors. We have developed a reactor antineutrino detection technology based on solid plastic scintillator, called CHANDLER, which could be used to search for short baseline reactor antineutrino oscillations. An 80 kg prototype was deployed at a commercial nuclear reactor for four and a half months with minimal shielding and no overburden. We detected an antineutrino signal of 2880 inverse beta decay events, with 5.5σ significance. This measurement represents the first observation of reactor antineutrinos in a surface-deployed, mobile neutrino detector. We envisioned several improvements to the detector from this deployment, which will be tested in an upgrade of this prototype. The full-scale detector will be able to search for sterile neutrinos and could also be used for nuclear non-proliferation applications. / Doctor of Philosophy / Along with light, the Sun emits a huge number of particles, called neutrinos. These neutrinos can pass through the matter without interacting as light passes through glass. Only a tiny fraction of neutrinos will interact in the materials through which they pass; therefore, they are extremely difficult to observe. There are three known types of neutrinos, but some theory and experiments require a new type of neutrinos, called a sterile neutrino. Nuclear power plants also emit neutrinos. We have developed a technology to observe these neutrinos from the nuclear power plants. We deployed a small prototype detector at a power plant and observed the neutrinos. From the deployment, we envisioned some improvements that will be tested in an upgraded detector. A full-scale detector will be able to search for sterile neutrinos. The detector might also have some real-life applications. It could be used to detect an elicit extraction of weapons-grade material from the nuclear power plant.

A Test of Alfred Chandler's Theory of Corporate Control

Schmidt, George Leo 08 1900 (has links)
Alfred Chandler, in Scale and Scope: The Dynamics of Industrial Capitalism (1990), suggests that the acquisition of targets is an alternative to direct investment in research and development (R&D). Chandler suggests that the failure of accounting to recognize investment in R&D as an asset may have made R&D less attractive. This study focuses on the relationship between investment in R&D and capital expenditures and a set of partitions based on Chandler's three technology types ("hightech," "stable-tech," and "low-tech") and three possible merger activity classes (acquirer next year, target next year, and neither acquirer nor target next year). Chi-square contingency tables are used to test the independence of merger class and technology type, a frequency test. Regression is used to test the relationship between R&D and sales and between capital expenditures and sales, with the sample partitioned by technology type and by merger class in a 3-by-3 research design. The sample is 23,146 firm years from 1974-1988 for 2,659 firms categorized into industry groups based on Chandler's criteria. The financial data are from COMPUSTAT data files. The frequency of being an acquirer is the same for high-tech and stable-tech firms (11.2 versus 11.5 percent of firm years) and higher for low-tech firms (13.9 percent of firm years). High-tech firms that are acquirers next year have 79% lower investment in R&D (.044 of sales versus .056 of sales) and 77% lower investment in capital expenditures (.071 of sales versus .092 of sales) than "high-tech" firms that are neither acquirers nor targets next year ("baseline" firms) as measured by the estimated slope coefficient in regression. "Stable-tech" acquirers are similar to "stable-tech" baseline firms in R&D investment (.016 of sales versus .016 of sales) and in capital expenditures investment (.072 of sales versus .080 of sales). "High-tech" targets have higher R&D investment (0.062 of sales versus 0.056 of sales) and lower capital expenditures (0.054 of sales versus 0.092 of sales) than "high-tech" baseline firms.

Water storage contributions to the excitation of polar motion

Kuehne, John William, 1960- 05 February 2013 (has links)
The goal of this research was to investigate further the role of air redistribution and continental water storage changes in the excitation of both the annual and Chandler wobbles for the period 1900-85. The annual and Chandler excitations from air redistribution have been studied by Wilson and Haubrich (1976), Wahr (1982), and Hinnov and Wilson (1985). Annual excitation from water storage was estimated by Van Hylckama (1970), Hinnov and Wilson (1985), and Chao and O'Connor (1988). Chandler wobble excitation from water storage changes has been addressed only by Hinnov and Wilson (1985). This study was undertaken as a refinement to their encouraging but preliminary results. / text
