Scratches in the Scrovegni Chapel and Inscriptions in Issogne Castle: Conversations in Post-Medieval GraffitiJanuary 2012 (has links)
abstract: Graffiti at the Arena Chapel and Issogne Castle engage in conversation with the frescoes and the functions of the spaces. These marks produce discussions of cultural issues. The graffiti found in the chapel and castle can be considered ritual and performative acts, visually documenting conversations among diverse audiences in the late medieval and early modern periods. Scholars of the Arena Chapel frescoes have studied the intricate painted iconography. Adding graffiti to the analysis of the chapel allows for a different interpretation of one of the most famous fresco programs. Abundant marks appear on figures in the scene of Hell in the Last Judgment, and are analyzed in terms of the medieval concepts of optics and sight, as well as in respect to class. At Issogne Castle, visitors inscribed graffiti on figures and scenes to represent their responses to key social issues. These included questions of class and occupation, along with political and religious concerns. Contextualizing graffiti in this way enables contemporary scholars to uncover a more complex and subtle understanding of the conversations on the wall in the late medieval and early modern periods through case studies of two monuments of art history. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Art History 2012

Chapingo: Capela / Chapingo: chapelAntônio Leandro Gomes de Souza Barros 29 March 2011 (has links)
This paper is a re-reading proposal for the set murals inside the Chapingos Chapel, Mexico. Such critice of art are related to appropiation of a methodology derived from the own notion of chapel. The objetive of this proposal and methodology is to present the details involved in the key-concept of support-chapel not only as a religius espace, but as artistic medium too

Preserving rural African American heritage in Hawkins County, Tennessee: a history and restoration proposal for Saunders School, Chapel, and Cemetery.Becker, Sharon Edwina 01 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
As generations segment and separate by distance and relationships, the chapel, school, and cemetery in what was known as the Saunders Chapel Community in Hawkins County, Tennessee, becomes a unifying bond to its descendents. This study records Saunders School history as an established central archive and uses the history for a restoration proposal. Saunders history, like all social and cultural history, exists as coalesced fragments. In the hope of deriving proof of the past, each entity and event is brought together so they might illuminate another. The story of Saunders Chapel will continue to grow and live on through the decedents, the site, and their history. The lives and faith that created the community has been brought to present light to insure the descendents of Saunders Chapel a place to keep coming home to.

Medeltida kapellplatser i Värmland : En landskapsanalys av tre medeltida kapellplatser i och omkring Långseruds socken / Medieval chapels in Värmland : Landscape analysis of three medieval chapels in and around the parish of LångserudAronsson, Tobias January 2022 (has links)
The overall purpose of this study is to try gather more understanding about the concept and term chapel in Värmland during the middle ages. According to the perspective of landscapes and the chapels surroundings this study tries to reach the overall purpuse through archaeological investigations, reported findings and sites, old map material, geology characteristics and names of places and sites compared to Mats Anglerts division of independet chapels in three groups. First, the non serviced chapels called Capelle non curare. Second, colonisation chapels, located in border areas maintained from an adjacent parish. And third, parish chapels reduced to an annex parish when two parishes merged. The conclusion of this study is that most of the investigated chapels probably at some point worked as a colonisation chapel or a parish church, often located in border areas. But also that the chronological aspect is crucial and that the chapels might have had several functions simultaniously.

Soil CO₂ Measurements and their Application in Karst StudiesCrann, David Lawrence 08 1900 (has links)

Soil CO₂ concentrations and soil temperature data were collected at the main field site, Rock Chapel Sanctuary, over a period of six months (July-December, 1981). Measurements were made under three vegetation types and at depths of 10, 25, and 50 cm beneath each vegetation type. Analysis of variance testing of the data set shows that at Rock Chapel soil temperature is not a significant source of variation in CO₂ concentrations. Furthermore depth beneath the soil, but not vegetation type, was found to be a significant source of variance in CO₂.

As a secondary part of the project the Dräger and vacutainer methods of soil air sampling were tested and compared. Both methods were found to be approximately equal in accuracy. The vacutainer method suffers from storage and internal pressure problems however it is a useful method when collecting large numbers of samples from permanent sites. The Dräger method is invaluable in remote locations and works best with small sample volumes.

The collection of soil CO₂ data should be done according to a well constructed sampling design otherwise much information regarding the effects of depth, vegetation type and other factors on CO₂ concentrations will be lost.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
