The relationship between sexual abuse and juvenile prostitution in femalesEdney, Raymonde Janet January 1990 (has links)
The relationship between sexual abuse and juvenile prostitution is explored through interviews with eight women who had had both of these experiences in their lives. Analysis of the narrative data identified both social-structural and intra-psychic factors that played a role in leading these sexual abuse survivors into juvenile prostitution.
Social-structural factors are defined as the cultural and societal conditions within which children are raised and socialised and within which they must learn to function. The social-structural factors identified by this study were cultural factors, gender stereotyping, the family, the schools, social networks, social service agencies, employment opportunities, religious institutions, sexual abuse and entrance into prostitution. Social-structural factors affect the individual at the intra-psychic or psychological level. Intra-psychic factors identified here were alienation, identity and personal control. Sullivan's (1984) theory of critical interpretation was used to examine the limiting effects of the social structures on the lives, behavior and choices of these women.
This research found that sexual abuse and the victims' responses to sexual abuse prepared and trained the young girls for prostitution. Further, alienation appeared to be a major determining factor that combined with the presence of sexual abuse influenced the outcome of juvenile prostitution. Finally, these young women found that their personal control was limited

Prostitusie by dogters : 'n opvoedkundig-sielkundige benaderingSmit, Hester Catherina 30 August 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / Prostitution among girls shows a steady increase world-wide as well as in South Africa. The assumption is that girls who are involved in prostitution are not able to actualize their full potential. This necessitates the therapeutic assistance of an educational psychologist and therefore implies that the aspects that curb personality growth must be determined and redressed. Information regarding the effect of prostitution on girls is inadequate, due to the fact that in South Africa no research has been undertaken to explore and describe the life-world of girls involved in prostitution. Two questions define the research problem, namely what does the life-world of girls involved in prostitution look like and how information in this regard can contribute to an approach for the educational psychologist in handling this problem. The study aims at exploring and describing the life-world of girls involved in prostitution and of using this data to generate a conceptual framework for prevention and intervention regarding prostitution among girls. This qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual research focuses on the life-world of six girls involved in prostitution. The research is conducted in two phases. Phase one represents the exploration and description of the life-world of the six respondents and during phase two this data is used to generate a conceptual framework for the prevention and intervention regarding prostitution among girls. During phase one the data is collected by making use of explorative mutiple case studies. The data is analised by using the phenomenological approach of Giorgi and the content analysis approach of Kerlinger. Available literature is used to compare and complement the data. The themes found through analysis of data emphasise aspects of prostitution, the girls' educational, scholastic and financial situations as well as labile emotions about themselves, their involvement in prostitution and the future. Phase two consists of compiling a conceptual framework, using the above mentioned data. Attention is focused on methods for stabilizing family relationships, scholastic progress and negative emotions as well as ensuring personal empowerment and ego strengthening to enable the girls to break their dependancy on this negative lifestyle. This research contributes to a better understanding of girls involved in prostitution and suggests a more inclusive approach to the prevention and intervention regarding prostitution among girls.

Child Prostitution in Thailand : A Supply Side Analysis from an Economic PerspectiveWolf-Watz, Sanna January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the economic factors behind the supply of children engaged in child prostitution in Thailand. Children are recruited to the sex industry either by parents, adults in their immediacy or choose it themselves. There are several factors that contribute to pushing children towards prostitution. Many of these factors such as credit constraints and mortality are related to poverty, the most quoted of economic factors behind the supply of child prostitution. Associated to poverty is the high discount rate which means that people prioritize present over future consumption. In combination with a lack of alternatives, this makes people engage in risky activities such as prostitution. This also seems to be the case in Thailand. To analyze the different alternatives faced by children in Thailand, a calculation of present value of life time wages of the alternative activities a child faces was computed. The computation of present value of life time wages of alternative activities of children in the face of different discount rates is in line with economic theory and shows that education confers the highest reward unless the discount rate is extremely high. If education is unavailable, as it is for unregistered children in Thailand, or discount rates are very high, as it can be for very poor families, prostitution will be the occupation with the highest returns.

Rethinking juvenile prostitution : insights from youths on the streetMorris, Jason. January 1999 (has links)
Juvenile prostitution is a social issue of major concern and controversy in our society. Research documenting high rates of violence, substance abuse, HIV risk-behaviour, and other such risks and problems have reinforced arguments to protect and prohibit youth from prostitution activity. However, presenting youths' experiences in prostitution as unidimensionally negative and deficiency-based potentially creates other important problems for youth, perhaps explaining criticisms of social services for being generally ineffective and, at times, aggravating youths' situations. Left out in these debates are often the voices of those who matter most, the youth. The present study has sought to hear and articulate youths' voices, suggesting that prostitution is a diverse and complex reality and that effective intervention begins with hearing voices and respecting choices. In-depth and semi-structured interviews were conducted for this study with ten street youth with experiences in prostitution as a minor and three key informants in youth protection.

An exploratory study of children and youth in prostitution with specific reference to Gauteng Province, South AfricaSibanyoni, Ephraim Kevin January 2013 (has links)
This study focuses on children and youth who have been exploited sexually for commercial reasons and are currently in a rehabilitation programme. At the time of the study these children and youth were staying in safe shelters in the Gauteng province. The focus is specifically on four facilities, three in Johannesburg and one in Pretoria. The aims of the study is to determine how these children and youth were lured into prostitution; to determine the impact of the prostitution life on the child and youth and to examine factors that contribute to children and youth resuccumbing to prostitution after being rescued from prostitution. The researcher employed a questionnaire as an instrument of gathering data from children that were rehabilitated and associated with four shelters in Gauteng. Scheduled structured questionnaires were used in the study and were divided into six sections, with each section addressing each aim of the study. The findings of the study revealed that children were lured into prostitution because of poverty, unemployment, and a promise of a better life. They also got involved due to drug addiction. In turn, children faced great risks, including forced perversion, physical abuse, and emotional abuse.

Prostitusie by seuns : 'n opvoedkundig-sielkundige benadering02 March 2015 (has links)
D.Ed. (Educational Psychology) / Juvenile male prostitution is practised world-wide. The fact that it occurs in urban areas of South Africa, has been attested to by media reports since approximately 1985. Nevertheless it is a relatively unknown phenomenon as it has never before been researched in South Africa. This study is the first research project which has been undertaken in South Africa. The aim of the study was to describe an educational psychological approach which was designed to assist those involved in juvenile male prostitution. In this research a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study was implemented. The research was divided into two phases. In the first phase the life experiences of the juvenile male prostitutes were explored and described using exploratory multiple case studies based on numerous sources in order to collect the data. The written data was subsequently analyzed according to Giorgi's phenomenological analysis and Kerlinger's content analysis. Categories which came to light, were used in describing the subjects' life experiences. The validity and reliability of the research were ensured using Guba's model for determining trustworthiness. On completion of the investigation, the research findings were compared with the relevant, available literature, to determine the existence of similarities and differences. At the end of the first phase, a number of themes were identified and were employed as a guide to the formulation of an educational psychological remedial approach. The three areas which were identified as being significant in describing an educational psychological approach were: boys who had run away from home and who were Jiving outside conventional social structures, boys who were living with their families, and boys who were still at school. In describing an educational psychological approach the main focus was directed at those juvenile male prostitutes who were living outside conventional social structures. As three of the four subjects used in the research project filled this requirement, it was decided to implement the programme with one of the subjects in order to evaluate and adapt it, if necessary. Prior to the implementation of the programme the proposed educational psychological approach for therapeutic assistance was submitted to two educational psychologists and a social worker for their appraisal during a panel discussion. Following consultation with this panel of experts, it was decided that too many factors existed which could negatively affect the therapy. These factors were identified as: the absence of social structures, the lack of conditions which would satisfy basic needs, and the absence of social support structures...

Polisens arbete med unga prostituerade : en kvalitativ studie om polisens syn på och arbete med unga prostituerade / The police work with young prostitutes : A qualitative study on police vision and work with prostitutesQatanani, Farah, Svensson, Jennifer January 2015 (has links)
Prostitution is a large and multifaceted subject. In this study, the purpose is to gain an insight into how the police officers work and act when they get in contact with young prostitutes. The study contains answers and opinions from five police officers which were conducted through semi-structured interviews in this qualitative study. The results were analysed based on a social constructive perspective and Goffman’s stigma theory. According to our result the police work differs depending on which city it is, even though all police stations should be working the same way. All five respondents defined young prostitution similar; they used the legal definition of it. Right now there is a restructuring going on in which 21 police districts are becoming one. When this is through, the respondents think that it will result in more equivalent work, and more room for action.
