Influence of socio-cultural practices amongst the Venda speaking people towards the disclosure of child sexual abuseRamphabana, Livhuwani Bethuel January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Social Work)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / Child sexual abuse is a social and health issue that occurs across cultures globally. The central concern to it is disclosure. Children and their caregivers do not easily disclose or report child sexual abuse due to a variety of influences. This study was qualitative in nature and its aim was to explore the influence of socio-cultural practices amongst the Venda speaking people towards the disclosure of child sexual abuse. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants who possess intensive knowledge of Venda culture. Data was collected from fifteen (15) participants through the use of semi-structured in-depth interviews which were guided by an interview schedule with open ended questions. This study has used both ecological and socio-cultural theories to zoom into the nature of child sexual abuse and socio-cultural practices which have an influence in disclosing this social and health phenomenon in Venda.
The findings show that Venda speaking caregivers have contradictory knowledge with regard to what constitutes child sexual abuse. Traditionally, caregivers are assigned the duty of taking care of children, therefore, it becomes difficult to draw a line between abuse and traditional duty. Forceful sexual intercourse, pornography and sexual grooming, and sexual violence were acknowledged as child sexual abuse. The findings of this study have shown that disclosure of child sexual is dependent on the social and cultural contexts within which people live. It was found that disclosure hardly occurs because of fear of bringing shame into the family name and its dignity. The findings also show that socialisation of children inevitably brings social gender-role expectations that make it difficult for male children to disclose their sexual abuse experiences for fear of being perceived to be more feminine than masculine. Children learn from initiation schools to be strong and brave. This makes it difficult for disclosure of child sexual abuse to take place.
Cultural norms of secrecy inhabits disclosure to take place amongst the Venda speaking people because of fear of being reprimanded. The findings have shown that disclosure hardly takes place because of lack of child-parent open discussion about sex related matters. Child-perpetrator relationship was found to determine
viii
disclosure. It is difficult to disclose intra-familial child sexual abuse for fear of dividing the family. The study also revealed that because of the patriarchal system, the majority of women do not disclose child sexual abuse because they are afraid of losing financial support as they mostly depend on their husbands financially. It is therefore recommended that awareness campaigns be continuously conducted with the aim of capacitating the Venda speaking people with in-depth knowledge with regard to child sexual abuse and its disclosure. Caregivers should work to improve relationships with their children. Schools should improve programmes that educate children about sexual matters. Different stakeholders should work together to bring about the environment that enables women to participate in the economic sector so that they can be financially dependent. This is because it was found that disclosure of child sexual abuse can be inhibited due to their financial dependency to their husbands. Community dialogues could also be helpful in shifting the mindset associated with gender roles and social expectations.

assessment / Child victim / Sexual crime / Legal professionals / Assessment guideline / Intermediary / Text in Afrikaans / As a source of information the court needs to be convinced of the witness's
credibility and the ability to recall and communicate the truth regarding the
Incident. Mostly the court uses the expertise of an expert witness to assist it in
making a decision regarding the way in which a child needs to testify in court.
Experts in this field are challenged to align the legal requirements with those of
their field of expertise.
In this research the Gestalt therapeutic approach is used to design an
assessment guideline to assist experts to assess the ability of child victims of
sexual crimes to testify in court. The Gestalt therapeutic approach focuses on
the present (here and now) and has the ability to obtain access to the information
present in the child's life.
In the proposed assessment guideline certain Gestalt play therapy methods are
recommended to assist the expert to assessing the child victim of a sexual
crime. / Play therapy / M.Diac. (Play therapy)

A survey on the extent and nature of poly-victimization of adolescents in HeideveldMcCormack, Alice 23 September 2011 (has links)
The goal of the study was to conduct a survey on the extent and nature of poly-victimization of
adolescents in Heideveld. This researcher used a quantitative approach, administering an altered
form of the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire to achieve the goal. This questionnaire had 34
screener items exploring victimization events across a broad range of possible victimization
types. Convenience sampling of grade 8-10 learners was used from a school in Heideveld.
Ninety-one respondents completed the questionnaire, the age range spread from 13 – 18 years of
age. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the results. Responses of respondents to
victimization (directed either at themselves or a peer) were explored through open-ended
questions. Content analysis was performed to describe the data collected. The results showed
that the extent of poly-victimization of adolescents in Heideveld is high. The findings were
explored and finally conclusions and recommendations were discussed. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

The policing of domestic violence in the Tshwane policing presinctMadzivhandila, Avhashoni Cynthia 06 1900 (has links)
In this qualitative study five police stations in the Tshwane Policing Precinct were selected. The objectives were to describe and explore the South African Police Service (SAPS) officials’ experiences on the nature and extent of domestic violence and the responsive strategies by relevant stakeholders thereof.
Data collection literature review and key informant interviews were selected. Purposive sampling was adopted to cater for 40 sworn SAPS officials; each station was represented by seven participants. The findings suggest that many academics around the world overlook the importance women and children as core victims. As a result, they become the neglected people in our society. Thus, there is no simple solution to this crime to date. For recommendations a multi-agency approach whereby all relevant stakeholders try to address this scourge is needed to enhance reporting channels, advance SAPS skills and obtain more convictions. / Police Practice / M. Gesinsberaders in die Wes-Kaap se perspektiewe op ouervervreemding tydens egskeidingLaunspach, Liezl Helena 11 1900 (has links)
Parental alienation is described as a child’s unreasonable rejection of one parent due to the influence of the other parent combined with the child’s own contributions. This phenomenon arises mainly in families of divorce where elevated levels of parental conflict, and care and contact disputes lead to increased tension and antagonism between the parties. The perspectives of family counsellors, who conduct assessments of children from families of divorce to make best-interest assessments for contact and care arrangements or to formulate and implement interventions, on parental alienation, were explored in this qualitative study. A literature study was undertaken to define parental alienation and to place the phenomenon in a South African context, specifically with reference to children’s legislature, and care and contact issues. From this, a theoretical framework for the study was constructed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight family counsellors in the Western Cape to explore their experience of the problem. Seven themes were identified, by which the perspectives of family counsellors regarding parental alienation were described in detail. The themes are:
Theme 1: Parental alienation during divorce
Theme 2: Characteristic properties of parental alienation
Theme 3: False accusations during parental alienation
Theme 4: Assessing for parental alienation
Theme 5: Interventions for parental alienation
Theme 6: Parental alienation in the judicial context
Theme 7: Needs of family counsellors regarding parental alienation / Psychology / M. Diac. (Spelterapie)
