Sects and violence : development of an inclusive taxonomy to hermeneutically explore the histo-philosophical motivators for the inception and development of the martial art, Wing Chun Kuen

Buckler, Scott R. January 2010 (has links)
Martial arts participation rates exceed those reported for a number of higher- profile physical activities (Sport England, 2002), however little research has been conducted to investigate the purported motivation and benefits participants derive (e.g. Jones, McKay and Peters, 2006; Ko, Kim and Valacich, 2010). A specific area often discussed is the notion of personal growth (Ko et al., 2010), either through a form of psychotherapy (e.g. Monahan, 2007), extenuating what may be deemed positive personality attributes (e.g. Kurian, Caterion and Kulhavy, 1993), lowering depression (e.g. Bodin and Martinsen, 2004), reducing aggression (e.g. Twemlow, Sacco and Fonagy, 2008) or reducing stress (e.g. Yan and Downing, 1998). Such personal growth is deemed to be transformatory in nature (e.g. Lancaster, 2004; Luskin, 2004; Hartelius, Caplan and Rardin, 2007). Due to issues of generalisability within martial arts research (e.g. Jones et al., 2006), one style which has lacked a tradition of academic research has been selected for a case study. Wing Chun is a unique style, developing exponentially over the past forty years: a style which retains its fighting heritage, utilising exclusive training methods (e.g. Rawcliffe, 2003). Given the pragmatic nature of Wing Chun, an hermeneutic approach has been adopted to investigate the histo-philosophical motivation for the inception of the style to provide a context from which to explore current participant motivation. Initially, an inclusive theoretical taxonomy has been developed for subsequent analysis. This hermeneutic analysis has been conducted through the development of a 360 degree mixed-methodological approach (e.g. Tashakkori and Teddlie, 2008) utilising exploratory and explanatory stages (e.g. Creswell and Plano-Clark, 2007) to ascertain the validity of the taxonomy. Findings are subsequently discussed in relation to the mixed-methodological approach.

Politics and factionalism: K'ou Chun (962-1023) and his 't'ung-nien'.

Ho, Koon-wan. January 1990 (has links)
This study is on K'ou Chun, the early Northern Sung statesman who made his name in Chinese history by the conclusion of the Treaty of Shan-yuan in 1005 with the Northern Empire of the Liao, which brought about the peace between the two countries for more than a century. Apart from discussing K'ou Chun's role in the 1004 crisis, this study attempts to view Sung bureaucratic factionalism from a new perspective through examining the activities of K'ou Chun and his t'ung-nien, candidates who obtained their chin-shih degrees in the same year. It is found that the chin-shih of the 980 examination including K'ou Chun and Wang Tan (957-1017) gradually built up a powerful faction through their t'ung-nien relationship. This faction dominated the Sung court for more than thirty years since the middle of Emperor T'ai-tsung's reign (r. 976-997). Their chief rival factions, interestingly, also came from two other t'ung-nien groups headed by Chang Ch'i-hsien (943-1014) and Wang Chin-jo (962-1025), respectively. Historically, bureaucratic factionalism always intertwined with court politics. It was no exception for early Northern Sung. Since K'ou Chun and his faction were deeply involved in the succession questions of Emperor T'ai-tsung and Chen-tsung (r. 997-1022), this study also focuses on the power struggle that took place in the inner court. K'ou Chun ultimately lost in the power struggle and died in banishment. However, his faction still managed to keep its influence during Empress Dowager Liu's (r. 1023-1033) regency when its junior members, headed by Wang Tseng (978-1038) and Lu I-chien (978-1043) gradually came to power. K'ou Chun and his faction were traditionally praised as "gentlemen", while their rivals were mostly condemned as "petty men". Such a view will be examined through the study of their behaviors. And K'ou's historical image will be explored through different perspectives as well.

Promotion of the Drug Abuse Prevention Policy in Chun-Huei Project and Students¡¦ Anti-drug Resolutions: A Case of Senior High and Vocational Schools in Tainan City

Liu, Kuo-Pin 06 July 2011 (has links)
Anti-drug campaigns on campus are the foundation for preventing drug use among teenagers. The Ministry of Education (MOE), Republic of China, has enforced the drug abuse prevention policy in the Chun-Huei Project since 1991, spanning 20 years until the present. However, statistics from the Campus Security Report Center (CSRC), MOE, show that senior high and vocational school students make up the majority of those teenagers involved in drug abuse and their numbers increase year by year, indicating a deteriorating tendency in regard to this phenomenon. Therefore, it was necessary to evaluate the current anti-drug campaigns in senior high and vocational schools. This study aimed to explore the relevance of anti-drug promotion methods in relation to anti-drug resolutions among the senior high and vocational schools, based on the experiences regarding the enforcement of the drug abuse prevention policy in Chun-Huei Project by the MOE as practiced in Tainan city. Purposive sampling was adopted with 580 students in Tainan city as participants. Questionnaires were administrated to them to obtain data on ¡§promotion methods in the campaigns¡¨ and ¡§anti-drug resolutions.¡¨ The elicited data was then analyzed through descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, factor analysis, t-test, One-Way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The main results showed that: 1. school type was related to the ¡§perceived static promotions¡¨; 2. gender differences in overall anti-drug resolutions among the students were observed showing that female students exhibited greater anti-drun resolutions than did male students; 3. living environment was associated with ¡§tips to refuse drugs¡¨ in anti-drug resolutions; and 4.Students¡¦ perceived ¡§anti-drug promotion methods¡¨ correlated positively with their anti-drug resolutions. Findings of this research were discussed and implications for anti-drug practices were provided. Suggestions are also proposed to the authorities concerning policy implementation: 1. The enforcement of Chun- Huei Project shall be continued to improve the effect of drug abuse prevention; 2. Executions to prevent students from drug abuse shall be improved; 3. Consensus on drug abuse prevention can be fortified by integrating community resources; 4. Appropriate promotional activities should be held for males and females contingently; 5. Off-campus counseling goals can be better fulfilled via frequent visits to students¡¦ residences; and 6. Anti-drug teaching materials should be designed to strengthen the students¡¦ anti-drug resolutions.
