Cerebral haemodynamics in man : clinical and applied observations

Imray, Christopher H. E. January 2005 (has links)
This overview reviews seventeen publications between 1995 and 2005. CHE Imray was the first author of eleven of the papers, the senior author of four and a major contributor to two of the publications. The overview should be read in conjunction with the full copies of the seventeen publications (Appendix 2). The brain is exquisitely sensitive to oxygen requiring a constant supply of adequately oxygenated blood to function normally. Cerebral oxygen delivery is dynamic, and alters rapidly in response to changes in physiological and pathological stimuli. Interference with cerebral oxygen delivery, either as a result of decreased cerebral blood flow, decreased arterial oxygenation or particulate matter (cerebral microemboli) within the blood can all rapidly result in temporary or permanent loss of function within minutes. The author has used non-invasive cerebral perfusion imaging techniques, initially in the clinical setting (in clinic, at the bedside and in the operating theatre) and later transferring these methods to the field setting at high altitude. As a result of these studies, new insights into cerebral perfusion have been gained. Novel concepts such as 'virtual altitude' and 'partitioning of arterial and venous volumes' have been developed. New equipment has been designed and developed, such as the recumbent, collapsible, portable exercise bike. Finally new clinical treatments have been developed, including an apparently safe way to treat the high-risk group of patients with crescendo transient ischaemic attacks or mini-strokes, greatly reducing the risk of developing a subsequent major stroke. The work submitted for consideration for a PhD by publication represents ten years of investigation in two closely inter-related fields. The aim of the submission is to provide a background to the seventeen publications (Appendix 2) allowing them to be seen in context to existing knowledge. Appendix 3 contains twelve additional communications that have either been published, or accepted for publication after the original list of seventeen publications was submitted to the University of Glamorgan. They confirm the author's ongoing interest and contributions to this field of research.

Sensory circulation : a centre for visual arts

Lotz, Pedri Stefanus 24 November 2008 (has links)
A building which grows from a proposed artistic epicentre of the University of Pretoria becomes a sanctuary for all those concerned with the disciplines of art and architecture. By occupying the vacant site at the historical southern entrance of the university, the proposed centre for visual arts becomes a vehicle which allows the main campus to spill over its boundaries and fuse itself onto the existing separated South Campus. It is the aim of this dissertation to explore the ability of spaces inside this building typology to assist in inspiring and educating each of its occupants. The journey through the building becomes the narrator of spatial experiences whilst creating opportunities for artistic expression by providing facilities for the exhibition of art. By inspiring young minds with a symphony of experiences these spaces create the foundation for developing great artists. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Architecture / unrestricted

Deep water renewal in the Strait of Georgia

Doherty, Louis Ford January 1987 (has links)
The seasonal and interannual variation of the water properties and deep water renewal in the Strait of Georgia are examined. Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen data acquired over an intensively sampled one year period are presented to show the timing of renewal periods and the variation in properties across the Strait and with depth. The northward propagation of the renewal signal and of its variation across the Strait of Georgia are discussed. A volumetric analysis provides temperature and salinity averages of the Strait of Georgia waters and of renewal water during several stages of each renewal period. Estimates of the renewal volume are calculated using a heat and salt budget method. Data collected in the central part of the Strait over several decades are presented to show the interannual variation in water properties. Correlation coefficients relating the wintertime air temperatures to the deep water properties some time later in the Strait are given. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Understanding the Role of Uterine Blood Flow on Offspring Development and Meat Quality in Swine

Ferguson, Briana Lynn January 2017 (has links)
Piglets that are born with low viability have increased mortality during early life, result in increased labor by personnel and potential animal welfare concerns. Producers focused on improving ovulation rates with the outcome of increased number of piglets with the average of piglets born increasing from 8.0 pigs/litter/sow to 10.3 pigs/litter/sow (NASS, 2016). This may not be advantageous, as number of piglets born per litter increased the weight of each piglet decreased. It is hypothesized this is due to decreased uterine blood flow available per piglet in larger litters, resulting in lower viability piglets at birth. Two studies with the intent of improving uterine blood flow will be discussed. The first study will investigate how pharmaceuticals could enhance uterine blood flow in the gilt. The second study will discuss the postnatal outcome of offspring, who experienced greater umbilical blood flows, born from dams that were exercised during gestation.

Mesoscale Atmospheric Circulation and Diffusion Characteristics

Ellis, Ronan I. 01 May 1973 (has links)
Constant volume superpressure pillow balloons were flown over a mountain valley downwind from a sharp ridge line. Balloon trajectories revealed and atmospheric soundings confirmed a persistent turbulently mixed adiabatic layer over the valley at approximately ridge top height except in the immediate lee of the ridge where strong vertical motions were observed. Temporary stationarity of the relative mesoscale turbulence was found to exist on a time scale exceeding 4 hours. Power spectrum analysis of component relative velocities showed greater variance in lower wave numbers and anisotropy in mesoscale turbulence. Eddy diffusivity coefficients for turbulence above the ridge height were Kx= 1×107 , Ky = 5×106 , Kz = 1×106 (cm2 sec-1). Below the ridge line Kz was nearly constant at 2×105 cm2/sec- 1. Kz was found to vary exponentially with R, a balloon-ridge ratio; Kz ∞ exp (3R).
