Lingering Words: A Study of Ancient Greek Inscriptions on Attic Vases

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to study ancient Greek inscriptions on Attic vases. First, the categories of inscriptions are clearly defined. Second, various theories pertaining to those categories of inscriptions are debated as to their validity. Third, the information that the inscriptions provide on the culture, potters and painters of ancient Athens is dicussed. This thesis will provide a foundation of current information that the student or scholar can reference and build upon when beginning their study on ancient Greek inscriptions. / A Thesis submitted to the Department of Classics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. / Fall Semester, 2007. / April 19, 2007. / Attic Vases, Inscription Theories, Toasts, Labels, Comments, Nonsense Inscriptions, Kalos Inscriptions, Signatures, Bubble Inscriptions, Attic Vase Inscriptions, Ancient Greek Inscriptions / Includes bibliographical references. / Laurel Fulkerson, Professor Directing Thesis; Christopher Pfaff, Committee Member; James Sickinger, Committee Member.

Prevalence and Profitability: The Counterfeit Coins of Archaic and Classical Greece

Unknown Date (has links)
Fraudulent activities flourished throughout the Archaic and Classical Greek world. One such understudied fraudulent activity was the counterfeiting of Greek coinage during this period. Many numismatists have examined individual cities' coinages and have, in several instances, discovered the prevalence of this type of fraud in numerous individual cities across the Greek world. However, there is not a single collection of all this evidence, archaeological, literary or epigraphic, which draws together the many examples from several Greek cities in the Archaic and Classical Greek world. This Thesis will examine the evidence at hand and include a detailed diachronic study of the major Greek coinages during the Archaic and Classical periods to draw together a vast amount of evidence into one body. The examination will include a detailed assessment of ancient authors' views along with ancient rules and regulations regarding counterfeiting, and existing coin samples to determine how prevalent counterfeit coins were in antiquity. This research demonstrates that counterfeiting was more prevalent than previously expected, especially in major trade coinages such as Aegina, Athens and Corinth. The find spots and analysis of the extant evidence indicates that previously help assumptions of where and how counterfeit coins were passed into circulation need rethinking and further study. / A Thesis submitted to the Department of Classics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. / Fall Semester, 2007. / November 5, 2007. / Counterfeit, Coins, Electrum, Silver / Includes bibliographical references. / David Stone, Professor Directing Thesis; James Sickinger, Committee Member; John Marincola, Committee Member.

By analyzing the written documents and the inscriptions of the bronze artifacts excavated in the Ningzhen and Shaoxing regions, the author concludes that there were a long period of cultural dissemination and exchange among the kingdoms in the Central Plain with the Wu and the Yue people between the region of Huai River and the Yangzi River where Wu and Yue were located. Due to the geographical advantage, Wu and Yue gradually merged into a greater cultural entity which eventually had the same religious beliefs and social customs. However, as indicated in the following discussions, both the cultural traditions of the Wu and the Yue reserved their uniqueness in various aspects. First, they adopted different strategies and attitudes in absorbing the Han culture. Second, both the Wu and the Yue discarded part of their aboriginal cultures, while modified their own traditions by integrating cultural elements from neighboring feudal kingdoms. Third, since the cultural strategies of both the Wu and Yue were different, which directly affected Wu's and Yue's cultural and political development. For example, there were conflicts and disputes among the ruling classes, especially during the early period of their contending hegemony with the feudal lords in the Central Plain. After a long period of cultural acculturations, new cultures were formed under the reigns of the Wu and the Yue's rulers. / This thesis focuses on explaining different processes of cultural acculturations among the Wu and the Yue, and the culture between their neighboring countries. By examining the evidences from written literatures and bronze inscriptions, the author emphasizes the internal and external political developments that affected the paces and the directions of their cultural development. / Wu and Yue, were located in the south-east China, contended with the feudal lords in the Central Plain for the hegemony during the Chunqiu and Zhanguo Periods (770 B. C.--221 B.C.). These two neighboring countries had similar cultural characteristics. For instance, they shared the same language, similar living customs and political systems. The author holds the view that the cultural elements of the Wu and the Yue were fairly similar to the Han people in the Central Plain. However, due to the barbaric origins of the Wu and the Yue ethnic groups, they were regarded as outsiders and were rejected to participate in the ritual affairs with the feudal lords of Zhou Dynasty B.C. 1122? until B.C. 585. / 陳月平. / 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006. / 參考文獻(p. 233-247). / Adviser: Ming Chiu Lai. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-02, Section: A, page: 0685. / Electronic reproduction. Islam and the Turkic Tajik symbiosis in Central Asia

Majoka, Hashir. January 2009 (has links)
This thesis explores two factors that have been instrumental in the evolution of society and ethnic and national identities in southern Central Asia. It is argued that the development of these identities (and the obstacles encountered in the process) are closely linked to the place of Islam in central Asian society, and the delicate ethnic balance between the Turkic and the Iranian cultural spheres -- which also manifested itself as the symbiosis between sedentary-agrarian and nomadic populations. It was the disruption of these two factors under Soviet rule which led to lasting problems that continue to bedevil the region to this day.

AU SEUIL D'UN NOUVEAU PARADIGME: LE BAROQUE A LA LUEUR DES THEORIES LUPASQUIENNES.

THOMAS, GEORGETTE YVETTE. January 1982 (has links)
Empirical studies of the baroque abound. The bibliography is enormous. Yet, to this day, if one asks: "What is the baroque?" the answer that can be expected is a hesitant: "Mostly...an architectural style which became prevalent in 17th century Europe." With his much acclaimed Lo barroco, Eugenio d'Ors did succeed in extending the sphere of significance of the baroque, from the stylistic domain where it had been confined for many centuries, onto the much vaster realm of epistemology. However, despite the soundness of d'Ors's epistemological approach, the trouble with his "eons" theory is that nothing in the world, be it natural or man-made, fits neatly into such precise, universal categories. The fault, as we see it, lies in the classical dynamics underlying the dorsian opposition clasicismo/barroquismo. But today, man's newly acquired understanding of microphysical processes has led to a non-classical scientific paradigm--a breakthrough which has totally changed man's fundamental concepts about the world and himself, and has enabled the French scientist and scholar, Stephane Lupasco, to elaborate a revolutionary epistemological paradigm: la logique du contradictoire, based on the antagonistic forces inherent to Energy, and on its remarkable properties of relative potentialization and actualization. Making use of Lupasco's novel theories, we, in turn, have developed a new conception of the baroque, a phenomenom which finds its explanation solely through the application of the lupasquian logique du contradictoire, and, more specifically, through the definition of psychic matter (la conscience de la conscience et la connaissance de la connaissance) as Energy's awareness of its own tripolar, infrastructural dynamics and of its inexhaustible creative potential. It is, indeed, to this existential self-consciousness that the term baroque can most aptly be applied.

Technologies, texts and subjects : William S. Burroughs and post-humanism

Land, Chris January 2004 (has links)
This thesis addresses the twin questions of technology and the human, ultimately questioning the validity of either category and pointing toward their dissolution in transhumanism. Starting with a discussion of the question of technology in organization studies, the thesis takes issue with the way in which discussion has focused on the technology- object pole of a dualism at the neglect of the human subject that occupies the opposing pole. Following a methodological call for symmetry the thesis reconsiders the question of technology in light of its human other and visa versa. Working with the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche and Deleuze and Guattari, the thesis suggests that there is a problem with maintaining a distinct conception of the human, separated a priori from questions of technology and language. In seeking to avoid an essentialism either of the (technological) object, or the (human) subject, the thesis reconsiders the question of the human, language and technics through an examination of the work of William S. Burroughs. Combining Burroughs' ideas with those of Deleuze and Guattari, a conception of the 'transhuman' is developed which, in opposition to a transcendental humanism, articulates the immanent implication of technology and language in the production of subjectivity, and points to the more radical potentials of new technology in figuring alternative modes of subjectivization and social organization.
