The Development of Clarinet Performance and Pedagogy in Taiwan with a Biographical Dictionary of Select Clarinetists

Chang, Ting Wei 07 1900 (has links)
Taiwan, a Republic of China, is a modern, westernized society in which there are numerous world-class symphony orchestras, university music programs, and professional clarinetists. Because of its geographic location, differing cultural influences easily find their way to Taiwan. Students in Taiwan can receive an excellent education without ever leaving the island; however, this has not always been the case. Though there has been an influence of western music in Taiwan since the seventeenth century, there have not always been many clarinetists performing or teaching. Until rather recently, a student clarinetist in Taiwan would have needed to travel abroad to gain the skills necessary to become a competent professional. Though there are many significant resources that address the history of music and music education in Taiwan, there are almost no written sources in either Mandarin or English that specifically address the dissemination of clarinet teaching and playing in Taiwan. Therefore, the purpose of this document is to trace the development and dissemination of clarinet performance and pedagogy in Taiwan and provide a biographical dictionary of the most prominent Taiwanese clarinetists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
