The modification of activated carbon cloth by alumina deposition

Hayes, Robert Andrew January 1988 (has links)
The impregnation of mesoporous carbon cloth with alumina has been studied. The most successful method of impregnation resulted from preparation of the alumina phase by a sol/gel route. This method involves a boehmite intermediate, and the heating environment for the thermal transition of boehmite to the final alumina was investigated. Heat treatment of the boehmite intermediate under flowing N2, flowing air and vacuum was found to give a different pore size distribution for the final alumina than did still air heat treatment. For the former environments the transition from boehmite to alumina was not accompanied by the usual increase in pore size. Alumina/carbon composites were made by dipping pieces of mesoporous carbon cloth in a boehmite sol. The distribution of boehmite about the carbon cloth was found to be improved by pre-wetting the carbon cloth and by the use of ultrasonic dispersion during boehmite impregnation. Dried boehmite/carbon composites, with loading levels of up to 180wt.%, were heated under vacuum to 5000 C. In this manner alumina/carbon composites of up to 60wt.% alumina were fabricated. The distribution of the alumina phase about the carbon cloth was investigated by electron microscopy and by gas adsorption techniques. Nitrogen isotherm data indicated that the mesopores of the carbon cloth were not blocked by the deposited alumina, rather the pore volume of the carbon cloth was increased by the clustering of porous alumina about the pore entrances of the carbon cloth. Water isotherms were determined for the composite materials. The water activity of the composite, particularly at low relative pressures, was found to be significantly greater than that of the carbon cloth as a result of the presence of alumina. CO2 activity of the composites was investigated by a gas chromatographic technique. The CO2 activity of the composite material was found to be up to 500 times greater than that of virgin carbon cloth.

Bark cloth : Swedish consumer attitudes towards sustainable fabrics

Nakirulu, Esther January 2013 (has links)
The fashion industry is faced with a challenge of the world’s population today and it is therefore looking for other alternatives of dressing up the entire population since cotton is at its extinction. This study introduces an African crafted sustainable textile fabric called Bark cloth. The research includes the details of the fabric, the production process and what the fabric can be used for in order to give the reader a deeper understanding of the fabric and why it is interesting to be added on the Swedish market. A qualitative methodology is used and that is to say; interviews have been conducted as well as empirical data review which is used as basis on both primary and secondary data hence this helped in providing valid information for this study. The study findings and results are greatly based on the field study the author made recently in Uganda to broaden this project and the study is also be based on the information was be gathered from the other empirical sources such as interviews and the literature. The study scope outcomes will be applicable to the fashion council that that is seeking help in finding out how cotton can be substituted and it will also be very useful at the Swedish School of Textiles and the Textile museum in Boras.

The traumatic experience that causes women wearing black garments to be excluded from the body of Christ : a challenge to pastoral care

Matsaneng, Aupa Stephen 01 July 2009 (has links)
My focus on this research is based on the Black African widows who find difficulties, in action and rejection from the Church after the death of their partners. I am aware that the subject had been dealt with in the past by the late Rev T.B.S.Mnisi and expresses her point of departure from the woman perspective. I’m coming from the background where these practices have affected me and challenged my ministry As an African minister experiences had clouded our behavior and judgment especially to issues that are violent, abusive and harmful to women. I’m fully aware that being a product of patriarchal structure raises eyebrows, but it will help others to take care of widows in such a way that they are included in the community. The way the widows are treated from the church, raises questions that challenges the Pastoral care. The challenges lie on whether the cloth causes people to be stigmatized and isolated. Therefore the findings of the research will enable the church and Pastoral caregivers to undo the wrongs that were done in the past and continue in the present. The author will use Sesotho influence to help in the method of doing Pastoral care in the Swazi context. Cross-Platform Cloth Simulation API for Games

Tang, W., Sagi, A.S., Green, D., Wan, Tao Ruan 04 June 2016 (has links)
no / Physics simulation is an active research topic in games, because without realistic physics, even the most beautiful game feels static and lifeless. Although cloth simulation is not new in computer graphics, high level of details of cloth in video games is rare and mostly coarse due to complex and nonlinear physical properties of cloth, which requires substantial computing power necessary to simulate it in real-time. This paper presents a robust and scalable real-time cloth simulation framework by exploring a variety of modern simulation techniques to produce realistic cloth simulation for games. The framework integrates with OpenCL GPGPU library to leverage parallelism. The final result is an API for games development with enriched interactive environments.
