Involvement, social class and attrition in higher education : the case of the stop outDaugherty, Terrence Scott 01 January 1982 (has links)
This thesis tests the validity of three theories purporting to explain the attrition of stop outs -- why students interrupt their studies with the intent to return to school. Data were gathered at two schools, Portland State University and Reed College. Two theories, those of social class and involvement, were tested at each school as contending explanations of attrition by path analysis of parsimonious models derived by factor analysis. These theories were found to explain little of the variance of attendance pattern (less than 4.3 percent) at either school. No particular lines of causation could be demonstrated at either school. The third theory, that of career planning, asserts that students interrupt their studies to re-evaluate their course of action upon recognizing that chances of employment in their field are not good. This proposition was supported by the data at Portland State University.

A case study to investigate retention efforts at Mt. Hood Community CollegeRawe, Carl L. 24 November 1997 (has links)
This case study describes and analyzes the experiences of Mt. Hood Community
College (MHCC) in its implementation of four retention interventions. Each of the four
interventions are described in detail. Discussion is framed within the context that retention
is a by-product of institutional renewal brought about by implementing interventions that
have campus-wide impacts. Discussion and analysis probe the interventions to reveal their
benefits to the college, addressing the question as to whether MHCC is being effective in
its retention planning.
Discussion and recommendations are framed around three insights discovered in
the course of the case study. These three insights are seen as key factors in retention
intervention. Each of the insights is followed by recommendations intended to mitigate gaps
in retention planning that the insights discovered. The insights and recommendations are:
1. Intervention needs to be holistic. Two recommendations were suggested to
strengthen the holistic approach. The first of these is a mentoring program, both peer and
faculty. The second recommendation is to strengthen faculty-student-staff relationships
outside the classroom by an intervention such as the establishment of learning communities.
2. Intervention needs to use high quality information. Recommendations were
to pay more attention to less than full-time students, to develop a formal withdrawal policy
and process, and to collect additional student intention data.
3. Intervention needs to track points of student economic impact. The single
recommendation for insight three is to thoroughly track and analyze the points where
students interact economically with the college. This is thought to be crucial as the areas of
economic contact play an active not passive role in enrollment and retention.
The case study found that MHCC's experiences with intervention are consistent
with literature findings, have been effective for MHCC, and the insights and
recommendations may be helpful to other community colleges in retention planning. / Graduation date: 1998

Successful Online Course Retention at Marylhurst University Constructing a Model for Online Course Retention Using Grounded TheorySchreck, Vincent 01 January 2004 (has links)
Over the past 6 years, the course retention rate for Marylhurst University's (MU) online courses was 91%, which is within four percentage points of its on-campus course retention rate (Schreck, 2002). This appears to contradict a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education that stated, "Although there is significant variation among institutions with some reporting course-completion rates of more than 80% and others finding that fewer than 50% of distance-education students finish their courses, several administrators concur that course-completion rates are often 10-20 percentage points higher in traditional courses than in distance offerings" (Carr, 2000). Recent studies (Beatty-Gunter 2001; Crabtree, 2000; Cutler, 2000; Fox, 2000; Moore, Bartkovich, Fetzner, & Ison, 2002; Morrow, Woodyard, Mora, & Nather, 2001; Valdez, 2001) corroborate Carr's claim and were used to compare with MU results. This grounded theory, web-based, research study aims to explicate the reasons why MU online students complete courses at high rates and develop this understanding into an online student retention model. A grounded theory approach was used to conduct this study, which is described by Creswell (2002) as, "a systematic, qualitative procedure used to generate a theory that explains, at a broad conceptual level, a process, an action, or interaction about a substantive topic".
The research process helped discover and shape the Online Course Retention Model (OCRM). The OCRM theorizes four major areas for inquiry into online course retention (Administration, Course, Student, and Teacher). Each major area of inquiry is divided into three variables of varying importance to online course retention. Perhaps the most profound discovery was not the major themes and supporting variables, but rather, the relationships between variables, and how these relationships explain the MU situation. The research concludes with an examination of possible "best practices" in online course retention, ideas for future research, and recommendations for implementation. This research explores the events and circumstances that lead to persistence and departure within the sociology master's program at Portland State University. It examines how individual and institutional characteristics interact and influence student decisions to dropout or continue in the master's program. It utilizes Vincent Tinto's (1993) theories of persistence and departure and his concepts of social and academic integration as they apply to sociology master's students. The purpose of the research was to describe how students became socially and academically integrated and how integration influenced patterns of persistence of departure. The aim also was to determine whether background variables such as undergraduate GPA, cumulative master's GPA, enrollment status, and career and educational goals influenced student outcomes.

State Need-Based Aid and Four-Year College Student Retention: A Statewide StudyMcFall, Kara Lynn 05 August 2013 (has links)
Every college age student should have the opportunity to attend college and earn a degree, but the fiscal realities for lower income students prevent the majority from attending and the vast majority from completing college, thus perpetuating an intergenerational trend of limited postsecondary education and a likelihood of marginal income and status. Past research studies have shown that, among lower income students, those who receive higher levels of grant funding to offset college expenses are more likely to persist toward completing their educations than those who do not receive the same level of grant funding and thus are forced to rely upon other means, such as student loans or employment, to pay for college. The majority of this research was conducted prior to the recession that began in December 2007 (National Bureau of Economic Research, 2008), which has been more severe and longer lasting than any economic contraction since the Great Depression (Dwyer & Lothian, 2012); more current research is needed to determine whether the educational retention behaviors of lower income students in the current challenging economic climate are positively impacted by grant funding. In this study I used quantitative methods to analyze a specific state policy change to determine whether a significant change in the grant funding provided to lower income students resulted in increased retention rates for these students. This study examines school years from 2006-2010, thus encompassing the recent financial crisis and affording an opportunity to explore the persistence behaviors of lower income students during the greatest financial crisis of modern times. The ultimate purpose of the study is to provide conclusions from the research to postsecondary policy makers in the hopes of informing policy and supporting continuing funding of need-based financial aid for lower income students.

Academic Advising Structures that Support First-year Student Success and RetentionMcFarlane, Brett Leland 08 August 2013 (has links)
Academic advising has been touted as a key to student success and retention. Today's academic advising delivery models vary considerably and little is known about the efficiency and effectiveness of these models. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between how academic advising is delivered to first-year students at a four-year public, high research activity university located on the west coast and the students' satisfaction with advising, advising learning outcomes, and retention. In the study, responses of 628 first-year students to a survey which asked them about their attitudes toward and experiences with academic advising were examined. Results indicated statistically significant relationships between student satisfaction ratings and advising learning outcomes and how advising is delivered, specifically, who advises students, where students are advised, how frequently students are required to see an advisor, how frequently students choose to see an advisor, and how "mandatory" advising is implemented. Furthermore results showed that student retention was related to who advises students and how "mandatory" advising is implemented with peer-led advising processes showing higher student attrition rates than other processes. The overall advising delivery variable effect size was small. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.
