SOCIAL SUPPORT IN NON-CAREGIVER FACE-TO-FACE SUPPORT NETWORKS AND CAREGIVER FACEBOOK SUPPORT GROUPS FOR ROMANTIC PARTNERS OF SPINAL CORD INJURED (SCI) PARTNERS: THE ROLE OF RESILIENCE, COPING EFFICACY, AND SUPPORT QUALITY

Pool, Gentrie Lynn 13 May 2014 (has links)
This study examined the effects of resilience and coping efficacy on perceived social support given to romantic partner caregivers of those with spinal cord injuries. This study also explored the influences of non-caregiver face-to-face and caregiver Facebook social supportiveness on caregiver well-being (stress, esteem, and health symptoms). First, this investigation explored differences in perceived support quality between via both support network types. Subsequently and relatedly, the investigation addressed the extent to which caregiver resilience and coping efficacy moderate the effect of support satisfaction on the well-being of the caregiver. In addition to clarifying the theoretical mechanism by which supportiveness may influence well-being, this research aims to offer practical guidance regarding how romantic partner caregivers of those with spinal cord injuries might most effectively receive supportive communication.

An instructional module template for orientation to the situated practice of oral communication online in the community college

Lane, Marty 20 July 2013 (has links)

The community college serves a diverse student population with numerous programs and degrees designed to complete general education requirements and prepare students for job placement. As these students enter their anticipated occupation, most are unprepared for the oral skill requirements of their new job. They lack confidence to navigate any number of scenarios demanding interpersonal poise, teamwork, conflict resolution, presentation skills, and other occupation-specific speaking tasks. Since many of these degrees and certificates are offered partially or completely online, this Project presents a practical means of introducing speaking skills into the coursework of the growing online learning environment. The research examined the ethos of the community college and the impact of oral proficiency on the academic, personal, and occupational lives of students. Expanding on the core required speaking course, the study and resultant project informed by a genre study, presented genre-specific oral skill activities in online coursework integrating the application of multimedia tools. Constructivist learning theory was foundational to the experiential and dialogical instructional design. Interviews and ethnographic studies in online and live courses informed the teaching and assessment rubrics integrated into the Project. Reducing perceived transactional distance in online learning is critical to student success and a relational approach to teaching engenders favorable student responses.

Building the Personal| Instructors' Perspectives of Rapport in Online and Face-to-Face Classes

Aquila, Meredith Suzanne Hahn 01 December 2017 (has links)

This dissertation explores the ways that instructors at a community college perceive instructor-student rapport in online and face-to-face classes. While instructor-student rapport has been shown to play an important role in student retention and success (Benson, Cohen, & Buskist, 2005; Granitz, Koernig, & Harich, 2009; Murphy & Rodriguez-Manzanares, 2012), it has only recently been examined in the context of online education, and generally only from the student’s perspective and not from the point of view of faculty. This study utilized grounded theory methods to create a theory of online instructor rapport building to improve best practices in both online and face-to-face classrooms. Interviews with 22 instructors at a large community college indicated that online rapport-building is often more time-consuming and difficult than face-to-face rapport-building, with autonomy, media richness, and uncertainty reduction, all playing a role in establishing rapport between instructors and their students. Using the collected data, I built on Joseph Walther’s Social Information Processing Theory (SIPT) by placing it in the context of higher education, and created a Theory of Instructor-Student Rapport Online (TISRO) to explain what makes rapport feel strong, weak, or non-existent, from the perspective of instructors.
