Capital Improvements on Principal Leadership: The Principal's Influence on the Retention of Educators of ColorBanks, Marc A. January 2022 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Vincent Cho / This individual case study is part of a larger group study examining how principals benefit from and shape professional capital to improve schools. A pressing demand on principals is not only hiring more educators of color, but also ensuring they are retaining them. Previous research tends to focus on the strategies and tools that will lead educators of color to enter the profession; however, educators of color are leaving at higher rates than their White counterparts. Using data comprised of interviews of seven educators of color and eight principals from a large, urban school district in Massachusetts, this qualitative case study explores the leadership strategies, if any, principals use to promote the retention of their educators of color in the Elody School District and why these educators of color remain in the district. My analyses, framed through a critical race theory lens, focus on the shared experiences of these educators who come from different buildings within their district. My findings are split into sections, in accordance with my research questions. First, the principals interviewed believed they employed specific strategies to retain their educators of color. These strategies included acknowledging race, breaking down racist structures that prevent their educators of color from advancing, and amplifying the voices of their educators of color ensuring, regardless of their role, they have a voice, are heard, and are supported within their staffs that consist of a majority White educators. Second, these educators of color stayed because they believed it was important their students saw educators who looked like them. They also stayed because they believed their principals valued their knowledge and experience. Recovery And Reuse Of Indigo Dyeing Wastewater Using Membrane TechnologyUzal, Nigmet 01 November 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of this study is to develop a membrane-based generic treatment scheme for wastewaters of indigo dyeing process of denim industry, based on water reuse. For this purpose, firstly the performances of microfiltration (MF), coagulation, and ultrafiltration (UF) processes were evaluated as pretreatment alternatives and the best pretreatment alternatives appeared to be single stage 5 µ / m MF and sequential 5 µ / m MF followed by 100 kDa UF providing high permeation rate and high color retention. These two pretreatment alternatives were compared based on the performance of nanofiltration (NF) using NF 270 membrane, and the best pretreatment process was evaluated as 5 µ / m MF that provided 87-92% color and 10% chemical oxygen demand (COD) retention.
After the pretreatment tests, three different NF (NF 270, NF 90, Dow Filmtec, USA and NF 99, Alfa Laval, Denmark) and two different reverse osmosis (RO) membranes (HR 98 PP and CA 995 PE, Alfa Laval, Denmark) were tested to produce reusable water. Permeate COD and color performances of the tested NF and RO membranes were similar and satisfactory in meeting the relevant reuse criteria, while permeate conductivity was satisfactory only for HR 98 PP RO membrane and for NF 90 membrane. On the other hand, NF 270 membrane was superior to the other membranes in terms of permeation rate. For NF 270 membrane / cumulative color, COD and conductivity retentions were found to be 93 %, 92 %, and 60 %, respectively.
When the developed process chain (5µ / m MF+ NF 270) was also tested for a dilute indigo dyeing wastewater, it was found out that the developed scheme works similarly and is generic for indigo dyeing wastewaters.

0 comportamento higroscópico do suco de laranja liofilizado, e aditivado com malto-dextrinas e lactose, e de misturas mecânicas do suco liofilizado com os aditivos secos, foi estudado através da cinética e das isotermas de sorção de água, em diferentes temperaturas. Avaliou-se as características espectrais no visível e ultravioleta, e o teor de vitamina C, de amostras de suco de laranja liofilizado expostas a diferentes umidades relativas e temperaturas. Estudou-se a influência do valor de pH e natureza do tampão sobre a retenção do limoneno emulsionado em soluções de lactose, liofilizadas. A liofilização praticamente não alterou o teor de vitamina C e as características espectrais do suco de laranja, mas aumentou o valor monomolecular da malto-dextrina (dextrose equivalente de 9 a 12%). A lactose liofilizada apresentou-se no estado amorfo. Os teores de umidade de equilíbrio das misturas aditivadas liofilizadas, foram menores que os das misturas mecânicas. Os aditivos reduziram a sorção de umidade em função do tempo. A retenção do limoneno foi influenciada pela sua concentração inicial, sendo que ocorreu a major perda, durante a liofilização na major concentração utilizada. / The higroscopic behavior of freeze-dried orange juice, with added maltodextrins and lactose and mechanical mixtures with this additives was studied through the kinetics and isoterms of water sorption in different temperatures. It was evaluated the spectral characteristics, in the visible and ultraviolet range, and the vitamin C content from samples of freeze-dried orange juice exposed at different relative humidities and temperatures. It was studied the influence of pH and buffer composition, on the limonene retention of freeze-dried emulsions. The spectral characteristics and vitamin C content showed no alterations after liofilization the maltodextrin (9-12 % dextrose equivalent monomolecular value increased. Freezedried lactose was amorphous. The equilibrium humidity content of the samples with additives were reduced when compared with mechanical mixtures. The additives also reduced the rate of water sorption. The limonene retention during freeze-drying was influenced by the initial concentration of the emulsion. The greater concentration studied showed the lower retention value.
