Can't fight the music| Utilizing improvisational musical performance to communicate with children on the topic of bullyingSmith, Kristin E. 14 December 2013 (has links)
<p> This thesis examines the utilization of improvisational music techniques as a form of communication to address bullying in the Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation after -school program at Wintergreen Intermediate School in Greenville, NC. The study is based on a three week performance workshop conducted by the researcher with 17 students. The goal of the workshop was to teach children ages seven through eleven strategies to prevent, resolve and cope with bullying using improvisational music. Chapter 1 discusses previous literature on bullying, and improvisational music and performance. It lays the theoretical groundwork and provides the research methodology, while discussing the project's assumptions and limitations. Chapter 2 chronologically discusses the events of the workshop by week, highlighting and analyzing key moments. Chapter 3 discusses the follow up interviews, findings of the study, and recommendations for future projects.</p>

Second Story Television: Multi-Camera Sitcom Spaces, Objects, and the Suburban Spatial ImaginaryBecque, Simone D. 01 May 2018 (has links)
This project investigates the concept of the suburban spatial imaginary with regard to multi-camera sitcoms from the 1990s. I contend that the physical flatness of the multi-camera set construction is tied to the ideological presentation of suburban life. Through a textual analysis of moments in these sitcoms, I explore how they (through their representation and production design) flatten or distort real-world spaces to reinforce them as distinctly suburban. This investigation is interested in understanding the ways the materiality of architectural space in multi-camera sitcoms is related to real-world spaces. That certain moments—cars crashing, mothers spending their free time in bathrooms, adult characters learning to ride bicycles—occur in a similar manner across these shows indicates that they are part of a larger tableau of the American domestic spatial imaginary. These moments provide the richest sites to discuss the anxieties and tensions of the domestic space. They also demonstrate how the filming style reinforces an ideological view which is predominately suburban, regardless of where the shows are narratively set. To understand how the multi-camera shooting style “flattens” the representational space, I move through the various settings, focusing on moments and objects that highlight those spaces. I start my investigation into the suburban spatial imaginary with the most immobile of places, the living room. Turning to the representation of the bathroom creates a bridge between the private and the public. The following chapters embrace that mobility to focus on bikes and cars. Throughout, I use these moments to understand the ways in which the filming style flattens the representational space and reinforces a suburban spatial imaginary. Using these moments, I argue that these spaces cultivate an idealized vision of living that is distinctly suburban and that this vision serves as a nostalgic motor that helps fuel a suburban spatial imaginary.

Marketingové plánování krajské galerie výtvarného umění / Marketing planning of regional gallery for fine artsBělotová, Jana January 2010 (has links)
The master thesis, "Marketing planning of regional gallery for fine arts," consists of two major segments; theoretical and practical. The first includes theoretical bases concerning marketing plans and most importantly, Arts marketing. The regional gallery of fine arts in Zlin can be given a practical definition with special focus on; characteristics, buildings, visitors, competi-tion, current marketing activities etc. The main attribute of this thesis and the initial goal con-sists of proposed communication solutions linked to the plan of exhibitions for the year 2012. Recommended communication regards the nature of exhibitions and using the suitable com-munication channel that finds the target group. The original proposal concerning the lower financial inputs while using targeted communication was proved. The effectiveness of rec-ommended solutions expressed by a higher number of visitors could be proved only after full application of proposed solutions.

A Program Evaluation of Performing Arts Instruction Used to Improve Soft SkillsEdwards, Robert Lawrence 01 January 2018 (has links)
Evidence derived from the 2012 and 2015 College Senior Surveys (CSS) noted showed that college seniors, at a historically Black university, graduated with little to average soft skills. Soft skills, such as personal characteristics and relations with others, are needed for students to succeed in postgraduate careers. The purpose of this study was to assess the level to which performing arts instruction (PAI) courses developed college-level students' soft skills. Kolb's experiential learning theory, which defines the learning process as knowledge and skills developed through experiences, and Stufflebeam's evaluation model, which uses context, input, process, and product, were used to guide this study. A case study design was used to discern students' perceptions of PAI to help develop their soft skills and meet employers' expectations. Maximum variation sampling was used to select 15 participants who met the criteria of being a senior performing arts student at the target site. All 15 participants were interviewed. In addition, the collected data were coded, organized into themes, and then I triangulated the participants' responses with the CSS summary report. Findings indicated that while PAI helped students meet employers' hiring expectations in areas of soft skills, it was also revealed that there is a need for soft skills development to be embedded in other programs of study at the target site. Both a 3-day student and a 1-day faculty professional development) session were developed to instruct both groups on the use of soft skills. Implications for positive social change are that a campus-wide model to improve students' soft skills across all academic disciplines may result in improved employment opportunities, thus contributing to the global economy.
