Architectural representation ; spatial comprehension and assessment through visualization technique

Alberto, Donald January 1982 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1982. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Bibliography: p. 104-109. / There are two distinguishable parts to this thesis. Part I is a discourse on architectural representation. It defines the theoretical boundary for Part II, research on a particular spatial representation system, physical models, and their use as a design aid. In Part I, representation is discussed as it pertains to the design process. An opinion is built around the excessive 'visual' nature of the topic. The many types of representation systems are described. Finally, a brief historical survey, as well as two current design processes provide insight into applications of these systems. Part II is the documentation of a research project that attempts to visualize physical phenomena (energy behavior) as they act on physical models representative of architectural form. A statement is put forth postulating a design approach that addresses energy behavior in a 'qualitative' sense based on its comprehension through these established visualization techniques. A procedure for testing physical phenomena on models is described and finally, the documentation of such tests for wind, solar shading, convection and light are presented. A conclusion forecasts potential applications of this research. The multi-disciplinary exploration of visual communications and energy conscious design is addressed in the content, as well as the communicative technique and medium of this presentation. The author is responsible for reproducing all the images in this book. Reproductions from other sources were copied photographically. In its original form several pages were printed in offset. This process was completed entirely by the author, from original photograph to pasteup, printing preparation and running the press. An experimental video production is being prepared as well. / by Donald Alberto. / M.S.

Disjunction of narrative space

Ji, Zheng January 2004 (has links)
"Book of architecture, as opposed to books about architecture, develop their own existence and logic, they are not directed at illustrating buildings or cities, but at searching for the ideas that underlie them."Bernard Tschumi (The Manhattan Transcripts)For me, after studying several years, architecture has become religion. The architecture design is no longer a creation but has become a discovery journey. The way to see and think is as important as design. This thesis is not going to show how I design, but how I see, how I think and how I understand the architecture. The aim of this thesis is to find a way to rethink architecture by examining the communication between observers, architecture and architect. By introducing the hypothesis of a communicative model, a structure that consists of the object and subject which involve in the interactive relationship needs to be addressed. For this purpose, structuralism linguistics is introduced to implement the analysis of the architecture. The structuralism linguistics directly deals with the interaction between object and subject. By the study, an ideological conclusion is presented, which I call projection. The second part is Guandong Museum Competition, which is completed when I worked in Eisenman Architects. As an example, this project not only shows the design, but also shows the relationships between several intertwined systems. The third part of this thesis is The Highline competition project which is my first attempt to implement the projection idea in the design. By applying the meaning layer structure derived from linguistics, the design offers a new architectural perception which is based on the understanding of the interactions between objects and subjects. / Department of Architecture

The validity of simulation techniques for predicting environmental behavior

Jacoby, Joellen January 1982 (has links)
Simulation allows the portrayal of unique environmental design concepts in order to predict the outcome prior to construction. Three (3) simulations--drawings, model and movie--were tested for their effectiveness in communicating future environmental behavior. Communication effectiveness was measured by the ability of simulation viewers to accurately predict their behavior in a built space. A comparison of, responses of on-site subjects to predicted behavioral responses of simulation viewers, found simulation viewers were accurate in their predictions in excess of sixty percent (60%). This indicated that simulations were fairly effective. An individual analysis of the three (3) groups of viewers found movie viewers having the highest rate of accurate predictions, and those viewing drawings the lowest. This general trend was consistent with other work.Testing was completed with design-oriented and non-design-oriented viewers. A significant difference in response between these two (2) groups occurred in seven (7) of the thirty-eight (38) questions. Design-oriented viewers were generally more accurate in their prediction abilities. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Communication aided architects : the information age and the architectural profession

Gilles, Werner January 1999 (has links)
The fundamental question in design communication is how closely the architect's intention matches what the viewer perceives in the proposed design representation. The goal of this thesis is to find more efficient means to facilitate understanding of design ideas, especially between the architect and the client or other lay-people.In the following sections this will be accomplished by investigating the history of various communication modes and evaluating their significance. The development of communication technology throughout recent centuries has contributed to changes in the architectural process. After assessing the current situation of applying communication technology in the architectural process, the thesis concludes with a scenario. The scenario will describe a futuristic architectural process, which eliminates misunderstanding in design presentations by using the next level of communication technology - immersive computer generated spaces. / Department of Architecture
