______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The aim of this work is to assess a strain-based fatigue life methodology, with particular attention to notched components subjected to constant and variable amplitude loadings. The methodology employs the rainflow method to count loading cycles, Neuber or Moslki-Glinka methods to estimate notch root stresses and strains, Morrow and Smith-Watson-Topper relations to estimate fatigue damage and the Palmgren-Miner rule to calculate the total damage caused by the loading history. In order to assess the methodology, 101 available fatigue tests on notched components (53 and 48 tests conducted on constant and variable amplitude loadings, respectively) were considered. The Molski-Glinka method combined with Morrow’s relation produced the best life estimates. For the constant and variable amplitude loading datasets, 75% and 92% of the estimates were within a factor of 3 in fatigue life, respectively.
