This paper presents an analysis of the topical organization of the dissertations of high school students, from the perspective of the textual linguistics, with the main objective to investigate the difficulties that students have to structure their texts in a coherent way and valid argument for supporting the ideas presented. Our initial hypothesis is that some problems related to the arguments of the texts of the students are due to difficulties in maintaining the general topic, to develop it through subtopics and link these properly, therefore the proposal to combine the studies of argumentative sequence with the researches on the discursive topic. To reach the objective proposed, we investigated how the weaknesses of the students with the maintenance, development and articulation of the topics relate to the development of argumentative response and loss of sense of the text. This analysis confirmed the relationship between the topic framework and the argumentative framework of the text and an important part of the organization and development of these frameworks and the use of mechanisms of coordination for the establishment of the meaning of the text. The basic studies that guided this research were Jubran et al. (1992), as the discourse topic, Pinheiro (2003), on the main mechanisms of articulation, and Adam (1992, 2008), regarding the prototype of the argumentative sequence. The sample used for this study was composed of thirty (30) dissertations produced by high school students, selected on the basis of the criterions: texts that present the problems of textual inconsistency and which have not undergone through any type of correction by the teacher.
