The thesis is an empirical analysis of eight paintings in which the problems to be examined are the relationships of the expressive visual elements of composition with the subject matter. An attempt will be made to examine some specific problems encountered with individual works, which will include emotional involvement as well as aesthetic, and arrive at some generalizations. The paintings selected to comprise this thesis are four figure compositions and three landscapes. The medium used to execute the paintings is Acrylic-Polymer, a Hyplar Product, and they are painted on Upsom Board, for which considerations are given.

The main concentration of study for my project was a series of color studies on canvas in which I explored varying proportions of primary color mixtures, unfamiliar color relationships and value ranges. I was particularly interested in exploring varying proportions of color complementaries in working to achieve neutrals. Through-out my studies I worked for a unity in the sequences of color mixtures. For part of my project I worked with collage materials, which were subordinated to color but released me from pure representational subject matter such as still lifes. After a series of these studies I again returned to representational subject matter as a departure for new creative expression.

This creative project dealt with the development of pattern as it relates to composition. A variety of methods of developing pattern were utilized: stenciling, transfer, and Macromedia Freehand. This assortment of applications provided for a broad exploration of pattern making. The artist also conducted in-depth research of artists who incorporated pattern into their work.As a result of the project, the artist increased his comprehension of the capabilities of pattern in picture making. An additional insight about the disappearance of the pattern format was also attained through research of the pattern movement. The writer identified an under-utilized method of depiction that is likely to be resurrected and developed. This research is artistically relevant in that it recognizes a compositional method that was prematurely abandoned and is worthy of re-exploration. / Department of Art
